Very nice collection RiKo. You made some good choices. I like Strider the most out of those. Hope you can find a solution to the G 'n G problem.

Thanks Merlin. I still need to decide which is best out of G n G and Strider. They are my favourite games so far.

Don't worry about PCBs being cleaner that you would imagine them to be. I have some older PCBs that look like new, some people just take very good care of their stuff.

One more addition to my collection, I just bought a GŨketsuji Ichizoku (Power Instinct) PCB...great game!

Very nice. I am a big fan of Matrimelee but haven't played any other PI games.

Thanks Cthulhu Thumbs Up Really enjoying my aracde PCBS so far. Trying especially to buy many of the games that were special to me growing up.

Try to swap a mother board to your Ghouls n Ghosts. Use the one from Strider. The motherboard is the "A" board. I hope it will fix the issue for you. "A" boards only cost 50 euros if you need to buy another. If It is not the A board then you have to send the game to an expert to see if it can be fixed.

What is the problem?

It takes 3 to 12 times switching on and off and adjusting the voltage slightly each time before it will work. Also when it is working, even a tiny vibration will cause the game to crash and restart.

Thanks for the help Thumbs Up Merlin also told me to swap boards but being new to PCBs I was worried I would somehow break Strider. Anyway I have done it now

G n G seems to start every time now (although its early days) and no longer restarts when I jog or move the boards. I haven't yet tried Strider B board with G n G A board (to make 100% sure it is the A board which is the problem) which I'll do next.

HOWEVER now there is now a graphics issue that wasn't there with the old GG A board. When Arthur moves left - his animation frames seem to not be flipped within their sprite (16x16) squares. (I'm fairly sure it is this). He also has the same problems when climbing ladders. Otherwise he is fine. I haven't played far into the game, but the vultures also have this problem when flying right (but they are fine going left). I haven't noticed any of these problems with Strider at all. Any ideas on this?

This is a tough case Riko. When I bought my G n G I had the impression there was a proplem with the controls, forward and up, not responding well. I switched an A board with my Carrier Airwing and now I think neither has an issue. But maybe this was a false impression in the first place.

Maybe G n G boards are prone to issues!!! I can't tell. They do have a different B board to all other CPS games.
Try to put some lubricant in the grey contact points between boards.
Also try to press all eproms and make sure they all have a maximum contact in their sockets.
Try to swap A boards back and forth several times and it may fix.
I hope you solve it and it won't need an expert. Or else you can speak with Vectorglow or caius in Arcade Otaku forum. They are experienced professional electricians especialy for old arcade boards

That's interesting you may be right but I also had the same impression when I first played G n G. A few days later I read the manual and found out the original arcade game only had a 4-way joystick. So if you want to jump right for example you have to push right and jump. Diagonally-up- right and jump will not register and will not move you right either (without pressing jump). So it may be that because after a while you adjust automatically to playing the 'correct' way.

I unplugged the Strider A board from the G n G B board and inserted it again and had the same issue with the graphics so not sure why that is happening.

I then tried the Strider B board with my G n G A board and had the same problems with Strider as I used to have with G n G: WHen I switch it on it has a blank screen and will usally play a piece of music from the game on repeat

Just to check the Strider A board was still working I plugged Strider back into it and had a great time playing a fully-functioning game.

My instinct tells me I should get hold of another A board to try with G n G and that maybe that will work

Actually Caius is helping me with my Prehistoric Isle (no sound). I'm told he knows his stuff. I should ask him about G n G. Good idea Thumbs Up

My Altered Beast is now working with sound (surprsingly battery is still going!)

If you already speak with caius, that's great news! Your A board is the older long version which die or fail more frequent than the newer short version A boards.

If your original G nG A board has no graphic issues with the G n G but only the power on off problem then you clearly need a different A board. This means your G n G B board is good. I once had a King of Dragons and its A board caused the game to freeze some time after 5 minutes.

All my 80 games play fine but you never know in the future. You may turn on a board sometime and it could be dead. To avoid this you have to take care where you store your boards. They must stay away from humidity. I keep my boards in a room with humidity 50-60%

Thanks for letting me know about the 4 way joystick and the way the character jumps!!! I suspected something was tough with the controls but didn't know what it is.

Must be frustrating for you RiKo. Hope you can find a solution soon. Clearly your A board is faulty but it's strange that you're having those new graphical problems when using the other A board. As you know when I received my Daimakaimura it didn't work but after testing it with the A board from my Final Fight it worked perfectly so I was lucky.

I know what both of you mean about the 4 way controls in G 'n G. I played the Mega Drive version a lot before I played the arcade original so that confused me too. Playing on Mame I often would accidentally press slightly down left or down right on the controller when wanting to move left or right and the character would just stand still leading to some frustrating deaths!

Ha ha, my Knights of the Round has started issues. I get flashing main character and enemies sprites and treasures. They do have corrupted colours too! Im my case it is either the B or C board.

I will keep you updated!

Yes that's exactly what happened to me. My Arthur kept stopping.

I wish I could fix Arcade boards. I tried to learn a bit but I don't even have a soldering iron yet. I really feel like playing Ghouls N Ghosts too. It arrived near Halloween, so was perfect time to play it Grin

Sorry to hear Green Beret. Will be interested to hear if you can track the problem down. CPS boards do seem very prone to issues from what I've read on the internet.

I've given up on my Ghouls n Ghosts until I get another CPS1 game or A Board. I found this repair log which seems to mirror my problems with the sound/music playing on start-up.

Symptom: Dead/music & sound on power up

CPS1 boards play music or sounds immediately upon power up if there is a problem with the main CPU or ROMs. Checked the ROMs - Replaced 2 bad EPROMs. Board would now boot but display no picture and would NOT play blind. This is usually a C board issue. A closer inspection of the C board revealed a gouged trace. Repaired the gouged trace on the C board to fix the game.

You inspired me Green Beret. I sent off my Prehistoric Isle (with no audio) for repair to a guy in the UK. The sound RAM chip was faulty so glad I did. Would have been beyond my skills to diagnose or fix. Is on it's way back in post now. I'll wait until I can test Ghouls n Ghosts with another CPS1 A board before I send that off. Feels good to have another PCB working Thumbs Up

Good to hear your Prehistoric Isle was fixed RiKo. That's one of my favourite 'pre-NeoGeo' SNK arcade games along with Chopper I and Beast Busters. I think you should give the high score challenge a try in the future!

Hopefully Green Beret's KOTR has been fixed too.

RiKo
Thanks Merlin Thumbs Up Yes I really like it. It's one of those games that just 'works' and is fun to play from the outset. I have it back now, sound and music is now all present.

Good that things are working again.
I had a CPS2 mother board last week without sound...luckily someone at one of the forums I visit often, had a possible solution. Tried it out today and it worked...now I can play Alien vs Predator with sound again.

Nice work. Alien Vs Predator is an awesome game. Very jealous Smile I plan to get that when I am able.

I have a couple of CPS2 questions if you can help Cthulhu

1. If you get a non-US/non-Euro CPS2 game, is there still a language option to switch it to English?
2. Why is Tower of Doom one of the only games with a decent looking label? Grin http://www.jammar...me-labels/

I got my first CPS2 game (Shadow Over Mystara) a week or so back - but I had to buy a JAMMA extender before I could plug it into my supergun. All working now though - Is great! Thumbs Up

It's an awesome game indeed and D&D SOM is awesome as well, congratulations on getting that game. I have both D&D games and they are both fantastic, I like TOD the most.
As far as I know there isn't any way to change the language to English on Japanese games (games with the Asia region are all in English). I have a couple of Japanese games and none of them have the option to change language.
There aren't many full color labels for CPS2 games, which is really a shame in my opinion.

Thanks for the help Cthulhu. What do you prefer about TOD? Would be interested to hear. I noticed you have Progear too. You do have some great CPS2 games Thumbs Up

Actually I was thinking about this - that makes sense because people would just have imported another region PCB if it had language options for the other regions. Something that capcom would have wanted to discourage. My SOM is a Euro board and it has French and I think German options as well as English. But obviously all those are still Europe. Feel bad for all the other European countries that missed out though!

Thanks! Progear is a very nice game and definitely worth buying. Next CPS2 game I really want is Great Mahou Daisakusen.
What I prefer about TOD? Compared to SOM the story line is more interesting and has in my opinion a better build up game and story wise. For me TOD has a more typical/ nostalgic D&D feeling, that I also had when I played AD&D a long time ago, if you know what I mean.
TOD also has some really nice little details that SOM doesn't have, such as if you lose all your live and have to continue when fighting some bosses, a sort of cut scene is shown with a moving portrait of that boss.
SOM on the other hand has better graphics, more moves and more to discover. Both are awesome games and dare I say, the best beat 'em ups Capcom has ever created.

I am reporting back about my CPS1 Knights of the Round sprite glitches issue.

My board is now fixed and the solution was quite simple. One pin on the B board, where the C board is socketed, had bent while I was trying to clean it and had it detouched. I didn't notice the faulty pin and I sent the board to caius in Italy. He saw it immediately.

I am very glad nothing on the board was dead because of age. Those arcade boards and all retro systems are very durable.

I didn't know much about Great Mahou Daisaksuen but watching in YT it does look good and I like the horror/mechanical theme too Thumbs Up

That makes sense about TOD. Some games I find myself very attached to just because they appeal to me in certain ways. Marvel Super Heroes is a game I really like where many other people are people are much less enthusiastic about it.That's good though because it makes it cheaper to buy.

Pleased you've got it fixed Beret. I'm still waiting until I get another CPS1 game so I can use the A board to properly test my Ghouls n Ghosts. It's annoying having a faulty game. What arcade board will you get next?

Thank you guys.
Rico my collection is complete or almost complete. 2 games I like are almost impossible to find. Cow boys of Moo messa and Geostorm. Strider has become rare and expensive. I may buy 3 Wonders if I find a decent original copy.

For now I am building my Mega Drive / Mega CD and Super Famicom collection.
I have also entered to the World of Virtua Reality through PS4 Pro.
