My Nintendo GBA SP sucks!
RiKo
Yesterday I got my GBA SP out to play with. It's a golden coloured - Zelda Tri-force one, so it looks the part. The screen however is rubbish. It looks all blue and washed out. It really looked bad.

I couldn't figure out if there was something wrong with it or whether I had been spoiled by the crispness of the DS screen. I went online to check and I came across this video.

YouTube Video

It turns out my GBA is an AGS-001 which has a front lit screen. Later on Nintendo released another version of the SP (AGS-101) which has a back lit screen. It's hard to believe now Nintendo would release such a crappy version of the SP.

at the time when the GBA sp was released, i dont believe there was a way of making the screen back lit, until technology caught on and they made it back lit.

Oh, there were backlit screens then, the Game Gear, released 1990 has backlit for example.
The problem was that it was expensive and took a lot of battery life, that's why Nintendo didn't use one in the GBA SP. Later on it was cheaper (like all technology) so Nintendo finally put one in their handheld.

Nintendo has never been famous for using the latest technology. Almost all their consoles has been less impressive on the technical side than their rivals, but they sell anyway because of the games.

Wha? Nintendo sucks? I totally agree. Pfft

Seriously, Nintendo is alright by me. They are a totally different company when I remember 20 years ago, but they are one of the few companies keeping traditional Japanese gaming alive. And, that is respectable.

The strategy of of Nintendo; produce not hi-tech hardware for a affordable price. After some time it's cheaper to produce a model with new features and they release it. Very smart marketing.

Riko are you sure your SP is allright?

really? i didnt know that. I thought the game gear used a front light since the game gear screens dont age well and look like garbage.

Does Nomad also look like Game Gear? I always wanted a Nomad but I gave heard it looks like garbage.
My GBA SP looks poor in comparison with my micro or DS.

I didn't think so until I saw that video - because mine looks exactly like the one in the video with the bluey, washed-out screen. I actually had a quick blast on my mono-Gameboy Pocket at the same time and the screen was easier to see in someways on that.

I am always suspicious of Nintendo though because you can guarantee there will always be an improved model around the corner that fixes a 'problem' with the previous release handheld. I say this as a 3DS owner Smile

Incidentally does anyone think the Gameboy will ever come back as a brand? It's hard to see it happening at the moment. I think maybe if a new Nintendo handheld ever fails, then they could resurrect it then.

i dont see that happening. the problem with the gameboy brand is that it is associated with "old" tech. like, when some one brings up gameboy in a non-retro gaming conversation, everyone thinks its like some old relic from 20 years ago.

Riko, I think you already answered your own question, if Game Boy had any pulling power, they'd have used it for one of their 3DS remakes already. I agree with the poster above. I think there would be a big, big shakeup if a handheld were to downright fail on the same magnitude as the Wiiu (i.e. stop making consoles and handhelds altogether). It's very easy for big bills to spring up when a company with no debt suddenly fucks up big.

Somewhat-OT: I firmly believe the original Famicom/NES didn't feature game pads because game pads were superior to joystick controllers; pads were simply cheaper to make.

So the 1st Gen GBA SP's are similar to the original GBA's in terms of lighting? That sucks.

Stupid question, but how better is the lighting on the GBA SP AGS-001 compared to the OG GBA's?

It's a shame that Gameboy has to die. Reminds me of the Walkman. I suppose the name Gameboy sounds a bit childish these days for young people now also.

Nintendo are great at compromising on components for price reasons and making the best of them - thinking of the SNES's comparitvely slow and archaic CPU, the basic original Gameboy compared to the Lynx and Game Gear. Even the GBA is strange because it is ideal to run SNES games but has only 4 buttons, and the SP has no headphone socket.

I don't know for sure, I would guess pretty smiliar without the light turned on (you can switch the light off). It's easier to see the screen with the light on, but it does wash the colours out. A bit like an over-exposed photograph.

I haven't watched this video but it probably says in here somewhere:

EDIT :- Actually ignore that video - that's a backlit GBA SP he has - just noticed!

Frugality and Miyamoto's visions for Zelda and Mario have always been the bedrocks of design. It makes me wonder how the compromises have affected Miyamoto's true visions (or visa versa?). Probably not much.
