What's Your Game of The Year?
RiKo
Which game have you enjoyed the most in the last year? Feel free to choose an older game if you wish, as long as you've been playing it this last year, that's what counts.

I have to go for Ultra Street Fighter 4. I love it. It is I think also the only game I have played properly this last year apart from Zarch (on Archimedes which came out in 1987!).

What's your choice? Smile

Bayonetta 2. Definitely. It's just flawless. Their may be other games that I spent more time with this year for various reasons, but Bayonetta 2 is definitely the best.

I'd have to say Dark Souls II, Had more than 100 hours of playtime with that game. Also bought the Dodonpachi Saidaioujou PCB this year and I still play it regularly...what an awesome game!
My arcade stuff

I have not opened my Dark souls II copy yet for 2 reasons.
1. It's the collector's edition with the statue and like to have it sealed
2. I'm afraid to jump in it's world because I don't have 100+ hours to get lost from real life.
Can't tell which game is my favourite for this year, have to think about it Smile

The biggest surprise was What Makes You Tick: a Stitch in Time.
PC point 'n click adventure from Matt Kempke, a German independent developer. Very impressive piece of work from such little team.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Retro Studios did a great job of revitalizing the DKC series. Plus, you don't have to use a wiimote anymore and tilt it to roll every time. They even added Cranky Kong as a playable character. Nice!

I haven't played any games which were released in 2014 so I have to choose an older game as my game of the year.

One game which has given me a great deal of enjoyment this year is Warrior Blade Rastan Saga Episode III. I had played it sometimes in the past but this year I put much more time into the game and realized just how good it really is. There are quite a few moves, nicely detailed graphics, a lot of variety in the different stages and some impressive looking bosses. You can do pull off some cool attacks in the game e.g. grab the enemy, hit them a few times, throw them, hit them again in mid-air and finally do a finishing move when they're lying on the ground. Particularly love the stage where you are galloping through a forest on horseback being attacked by bandits.

I got equal enjoyment this year from Metal Slug 2, 3, 5, 6, Demon Front, Dolphin Blue, Alien vs Predator, Warriors of Fate, Prehistoric Isle 2, Nightmare in the Dark, Zupapa!
Can't say which I prefer more.

Great choices everyone Thumbs Up

I still have Zupapa, Bayonetta 1 and Dark Souls 1 to play!

I was just looking that up and looks quite cool. I'm really into 2d games at the moment. The version I was watching was 2 screen. Is that the version you are playing Merlin?

Yes Warrior Blade runs on a dual monitor arcade cabinet. Must be very impressive playing it on one of those cabs. Really hope I can find it again in an arcade. I remember in the past seeing Warrior Blade at Mikado. I just play the game using Mame. I hope you will give it a try some time RiKo.

In case anyone doesn't already know this, you can play an extra four stages by changing the dip switch setting.

The amount of speech in the game is impressive. The wizard Mahadidekaradi, who sometimes appears to help you and can cast a wide range of spells, is pretty cool. Being able to choose your route through the game is nice too especially since the item you gain at the end of each area does make a significant difference e.g increasing your defence, magic power, maximum health etc. I like how the characters' stance changes during boss fights and their moves change slightly e.g. Dewey gains a new four hit combo.

I will definitely try it out. I've got Blade Master too try too. That's crazy in Warrior Blade having 4 stages that are normally hidden. Is there any reason why they were hidden?

When playing on default settings you can still get to play some or all of the four extra 'bad fortune' stages but only if you aren't doing so well in the game. For example in this video the player loses a life in the ship stage resulting in bad fortune when he is bitten by the octopus and needs to travel to the fairy forest to get a special healing herb (from around 12:39 in the video).

By changing the dipswitch setting to 'long game' you are guaranteed to be able to play through all fourteen stages.

The HG101 Rastan article has a very good write-up about the game.

Hope you enjoy the game RiKo. Blade Master is pretty good too.

Sorry if I've made this thread go a bit off-topic. Hopefully some more people will post their choice of game of the year in this thread!

Thanks for all the info Merlin Thumbs Up

I really like that idea, I once wanted to make a game where if you died you could end up in hell, and then you'd have to fight your way out. I guess in Warrior Blade high score chasers will try to get bad fortune so they can get more points?

Not 100% sure about this but as far as I can tell it seems when playing on default settings you only get the bad fortune stages if you credit feed. I think the game is actually easier if you have it set to the longer version because after completing the Fairy Forest stage your lifebar increases in length.

Hmmm.

It's either:

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 or NFS: Hot Pursuit (2010)

I only just got around to unwrapping and enjoying those games last year and was thoroughly impressed with both titles.

Tekken Tag 2 DEFINITELY inspired me to start playing modern fighters again after a long hiatus from doing so. It inspired me to buy and play MK9 Complete, DOA5 and Injustice GE.

TTT2 is probably, for me, the best 3D fighter made - to date - though. It really is so very well put together. I definitely ENJOY Tekken > VF too, even if VF is more technically accomplished.

NFS Hot Pursuit was unexpectedly brilliant. It became even MORE brilliant after I unwrapped and played NFS Most Wanted and NFS Rivals, both of which pale in comparison to the sheer thrill and excitement you get from high speed racing in HP. Not to mention, it's just put together so much better than its sequels.

So, definitely, those two...

Good to see you Ninja Thumbs Up I've always felt that too about Tekken and VF. I've tried a few times to get into VF but it needs to actually be more fun to get me into it. With Tekken I wish they would tone done the juggling though.

As for Hot Pursuit that's a game I've had on my list to try at some point. I think it was developed by the Burnout guys, but I don't know if they made any other NFS games after that or not.

Criterion made 2x NFS titles in total: Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted - both for PS3 & 360 (etc).

Both are quite different in their own way, so you'd have to play both to decide which is more to your personal tastes.

Personally, I think HP is the overall better NFS experience > MW. Both are cheap enough to pick up and decide for yourself though, first hand...
