Cosmic Tower - Neo Geo - Work in Progress

This is a work in progress report on a little platform game I am trying to make for the Neo Geo. It's not actually a game yet although it's taken me about 8 weeks to get this far! The graphics are all rough of course and the game still needs enemies and hazards.

The game is called Cosmic Tower and the idea will be to climb a number of towers (in space!) each tower gets higher and harder and will have different challenges and hazards to overcome. That's if I finish it - which knowing me I probably won't :-)

I wrote this using the Neo Geo Dev Kit (downloadable from Sebastian Mihai's webpage, although the dev kit was created by Jeff Kurtz of NeoBitz). I'll get the game files up somewhere so people can try it in MAME.

Very cool RiKo that you have created your very own Neo Geo game! Must have been a lot of hard work to get that far. I'd like to give it a go on Mame when it's ready. Would be nice if the finished game also worked on NGCD systems so I can burn a copy and play it on my CDZ just like I did with smccd's Neo Thunder.

Some Neo Geo homebrew games don't have music and not many sound effects. I hope it won't be too difficult to add a nice soundtrack and sound effects to Cosmic Tower.

Thanks very much Merlin. Yes I'm pleased with what I've done so far and was a good learning experience. I plan to raid the Frog Feast code (which is open source) for sound routines. Also although my game does scroll it doesn't really use the proper scrolling routines yet - which I would need to use to go much further. I know how to do that (in my head at least), but it will require a bit of work in assembler.

You can compile for the Neo Geo CD within the Dev Kit. I haven't tried it yet but I should be able to do it.

Right then RiKo. Here's hoping you can accept my philosophy with regards to Cosmic Tower! Grin

I like the look of the game. It looks fun, looks to have sharp controls and I like the visual style. I think, although making life difficult for myself, I quite liked the idea of the random projectiles in the background (i.e. Rocket, Moon/Asteroid etc) ACTUALLY being a hazard to avoid! It would just add that extra "oh god!" factor! Pfft

The thing is, although I doubt it interests you (and it's interesting you should mention Frog Feast) is that, if you converted this type of game, in that graphical style, to the likes of the Atari Jaguar and a more simplistic one for the 2600, plenty of people WOULD buy it!

PPL go mad for stuff like this in those retro communities and always welcome CD or Cart releases of such titles.

They offer the game for FREE as a rom or as a CD release and, in the Atari community, pretty much everyone prefers to own hard copies of these types of games.

Similarly, I imagine you could sell a finished version of your game on App stores too! Many PPL still love the 8-bit era charm! It's just so fresh and un-convoluted Smile

I think that's a very good spot ninja, I was intitally aiming towards more of a (retro) computer-game style on the Neo Geo as opposed to the normal arcade style. That's also why I wasted loads of sprites using by them as tiny particles...

I really appreciate your comments, esp that you can see past the dodgy graphics. Yes I could make the rockets or comets a hazard, or just make one particular kind of background detail a hazard just to stop people getting comfortable. That is quite evil Smile I'm definitely going to have a few surprises in there.


As for the Jaguar, those games look really cool, I like the trailer for Downfall too. I remember there was a game called Rox for the Atari ST that was good too. Yes I like the idea a lot. But I'll have to see how I go on the Neo Geo first . It's early days, I haven't actually done any game programming in over a week because I'm playing around with the dev kit trying to get things working in it I want.

I was actually planning to buy a Jaguar again at some point because I miss it. BTW you would be the man to ask is it best to get a US or a UK jag? I am totally confused as to which is best if any? I've heard they are both full screen.

Thanks for looking into compiling Cosmic Tower for NGCD RiKo. Once the game is completed I'd like to burn a copy and play it on my CDZ. Hopefully it won't be a problem adding sound to the game. Good luck with the project and please keep us updated. Thumbs Up

No problem Merlin, would be great to see it on a real Neo Geo Thumbs Up I'm still working on getting scrolling routines working. I think I have figured it out now. I'm writing a map-editor in a different programming language so still not working on the game as such. But all this stuff has to be done first, and it will be useful in the future maybe.

Progress Report

I've been working on this for a couple of hours every day. It's been very slow progress because I am writing scrolling routines in assembler and I'm very much a beginner.

The game itself hasn't progressed at all because I've been working on getting a map into the game and scrolling it smoothly. Before I just laid 4 screens end to end vertically, which worked but was a bit of a cheat. I want to get a map scrolling in 8 directions even though for the most part Cosmic Tower will only scroll vertically.

Map Editor

I've written a map editor which can create maps of any size, save and load them and it can use 16 colour tiles that have been drawn in an art package. The Neo Geo has a built-in facility for animating background tiles. It can cycle between groups of either 4 or 8 tiles so I plan to add that facility to the map editor as well.

This is the map on the Neo Geo (running in MAME). That's just debug text on the screen, showing the current map coordinates. Currently it scrolls a tile at a time when you move the Neo Geo joystick, but soon (fingers crossed) it will scroll smoothly in 8 directions.

Once this is done I can get back to the game...

Thanks for the update RiKo. Sounds like you're making good progress. Hopefully it won't be that difficult incorporating maps from your map editor into the game.

Thanks very much Mojo Thumbs Up Still at an early stage but at least I haven't given up yet. I have to say I'm very grateful to Jeff Kurtz for the dev kit. I'd have no chance at making something otherwise. I also study his 68k code a lot to pick up tips on how to write my own routines.

Good news, I've got the map into the Neo Geo now and it scrolls in 8 directions, all smoothly. I should be able to overlay 2 maps and scroll the back one slower to make a parallax effect. (I could as a maximum do 4 layers but I would use 84 sprites out of the 96 sprites-on-a-line limit just for the background. So there would only be 12 sprites left to display)

Ahh cool , I get it I think are they tiles for sprites?

I drew up some rough tiles to test the map editor - they won't be in the game, thankfully Smile That game map was just for testing the scroll routine, it won't be in the game either. If you watch the video in the first post you'll get a rough idea of how the game will play.
