Gunlord - Game of the Week
Murikov
Welcome to the Game of the Week!

It's Homebrew time again! Let's look at NGDEV's probably most ambitious project in their company history, right after their debut titles Fast Striker and Last Hope. For Gunlord the two-headed developer team from Germany hired old acquaintances like Rafael Dyll to compose the soundtrack or even several pixel artists like Gryzor to polish the already good looking sprites and pixel artwork.

By the way, the crowdfunding campaign for the 3DS and WiiU versions was quite a failure. According to Timm Hellwig, NGDEV is thinking of funding a release by other measures. If you still want to get the game (and if the AES is way too expensive for you) there's still the Dreamcast version. It's still available at NGDEV.DIRECT!

At this point I also recommend to take a look at Gunlords quasi 16-Bit forefathers Super Turrican and Mega Turrican, both terrific games with excellent soundtracks!

Gunlord

Genre: Run 'n Gun / Turrican clone
Players: 1
Size: 624 MEGS
Released on: AES, MVS, DC (PC, WiiU and 3DS TBA)

Brief Description:

Gunlord is a side scrolling run 'n gun video game for the Neo Geo, Sega Dreamcast, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS developed by NG.DEV.TEAM. Gunlord features 9 non-linear stages boasting 16-bit hand drawn graphics with constant 60fps. The character design and gameplay mechanics are clearly inspired by the Turrican series, a German Run 'n Gun franchise which has its roots on the C64 and Amiga.

As some of you know, I bought a DC just for this game. No way would I shell out more than 400 bucks, for any game, but I knew I HAD to play this in some form.

Simple as this, I really like this game. The graphics are fantastic, for what they are. The music is absolutely stellar. There is replay value, since there are many "secret" spots to find and alternate routes to explore. The bosses, all of them, are well animated. It is pretty obvious a lot of effort was put into this.

Unfortunately, with my shitty -ass gaming skills and hectic life... this game turned out to be a challenge for me. Eventually I quit it, only to pick it up again recently. The DC version only gives you so many continues, and they aren't enough to me. I really, really wish they would have made TRUE arcade mode, with infinite credits. I've made it to the last boss, but can't beat the son of a bitch... even with many many lives stocked up.

In short, I am pissed that I can't beat this goddamn game, but I love it.

I will shut up now.

I really want to try this game out. I've always been intrigued by it, but I've never gotten the chance to. Who knows maybe some day I'll find it for the DC as well.

I have it in my DC collection. It's a good game but not as good as the game it tries to be "Turrican" A great pick up for the DC but the price for the NEO GEO is to much. You can buy all the Turrican games on Amiga, Snes and Genesis for that kind of cash.

If you have not played the Turrican games you should do that before you play Gunlord. If you only pick up one Turrican go for Mega Turrican on the Genesis. One of the best 16 bit games ever made in my opinion.

Bought this when it launched for Dreamcast. I was impressed by it tbh. I looks and plays really well and is a very tasteful tribute to the aforementioned Turrican series, albeit, I'd also agree that MEGA Turrican and SUPER Turrican are better games overall.

Like 2D though, unfortunately, I never got a round to finishing it, but I shall do at some point in the near future.

I voted that I think it's excellent, but I still think Fast Striker is the best homebrew development from NGDEV thus far.

Spot on Ninja, a superb game. Actually better than most non-homebrew games...

Gunlord I have mixed feelings about. Like other people have said it plays very much like Turrican, but a bit more arcadey. With the initial release, although it had a lot of weapons, none of them meant much because you only really needed the beam weapon. The bosses looked great but felt a bit lightweight and followed too predictable patterns. However to their credit NGDevteam listened to the community's criticisms and fixed all of this for the update and all other versions released since.

My main problem is that while I enjoy playing, when I die I don't really feel like playing again until another day. It just seems like your games last for quite a long time, and then you don't really feel like going through that all over again. That's just me and its probably the exploration side of the game that doesnt sit with me so well. I was never a big fan of Turrican really. I also thought maybe they could have put diagonal surfaces in there, a big part of the Turrican games is rolling down slopes in your gyroscope form destroying enemies.

It's a really well made game though, great graphics, well programmed (no slowdown that I can remember) and great sound and atmospheric music.
