Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams - Game of the Week
Murikov
Welcome to the Game of the Week!

Ever wanted to navigate a witch riding her broomstick through hordes of flying monsters? Then Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams for the NGPC might be something for you! The developer team Success released the first installment of the Cotton series in 1989 on Sega's arcade board 'Sega System 16'. The first game was quite successful and Success (what a pun!) released several sequels and ports in the following years. Over ten years after the release of the original Cotton title, Success finally ported it for SNK's Neo Geo Pocket Color in 2000, making it finally accessible to handheld gamers.

Ever heard of this one or even played it? While outside in Japan the series remained quite unknown (you don't play as a kitschy witch everyday, you know), the Cotton games made themselves quite a name in the land of the rising sun. How about you?

Brief Description:

Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams is a scrolling shooter arcade game, first released on Sega's Sega System 16B Arcade system board in 1989, then ported by Success to the Neo Geo Pocket Color in 2000. The player controls Cotton, a young witch on a broomstick. The player must blast various monsters and avoid being shot. The player can collect power-ups to enhance their weaponry and unleash a more powerful attack on the enemy. The player has lives represented by an arrow. The player has three lives and is only allowed one hit per life.

I must admit that it's been a while since a played this.... but I do remember that I just couldn't get on with it as well as the PC Engine version. I think it was due to her hit-box feeling a little too large for such a small display.

However, I'm willing to give it another go to see if my opinion changes. It's also sadly the only shooter on the console so I should give it a chance.

I REALLY want to get my hands on a NGPC copy of this game. Seems like it's very elusive, help anybody? I don't want the box and all that shit, Just the cart.

Unfortunately, this is one of those games that seems to only show up as a complete package. It didn't get a US release and it certainly doesn't seem to show up in those Pocket Colour Arcade blister packs.

The UK clamshell release is relatively hard to find, and can get quite expensive too. I can't recall seeing the Japanese version in cardboard packaging in a while either. To be fair though I'm not too sure on the rarity of most Japanese games.

Flashmasta to the rescue?

Game looks interesting. Sucks that there's not much fanart of it.
