Jul 14 Game of the Week
"Furious" Warriors, literally.

In the mid eighties, while the ship shooter camp had Last Mission and Legendary Wings, run 'n' gun had the likes of Ikari Warriors. Ikari Warriors (IW) was the first memorable, overhead run 'n' gun to grace arcades. This is a frustratingly difficult game due to random enemy placements and poor level design a twitch shooter. Now, mindless action can definitely be desirable in an arcade game, but SNK failed to appropriately excluded one critical gameplay feature that was popular up to that point: limited continues. Continuation isn't allowed near the end, when things start getting interesting. In other words, knowing I had only one chance near the chaotic end made me worry more and enjoy the action less. The limit is out of place when elements are just thrown about I wish SNK had used better judgement and made the entire game continuable. No one is going to restart this hot mess after getting sent back to the beginning from near the end. Nevertheless, gameplay of later, popular titles, like Heavy Barrel and Contra, can be credited to IW. Contra vastly improved enemy placements and level designs, making the limited continuation feature a tasteful challenge. Heavy Barrel, for example, polished the general gameplay of IW (Heavy Barrel is less twitchy). Perhaps there is no way to make an overhead shooter as articulate as a side scrolling one, as come to think of it I can't think of any overhead run 'n' gun that boasts great level design and enemy placement. Perhaps an overhead run 'n' gun is the ultimate arcade experience when unlimited chances for continuation (of mindless action) are allowed. What do you think?

As far as control, IW has the definite edge over games with plain, old joysticks. Games like Contra and Rush 'n' Attack are at a disadvantage due to aiming and moving being the same command (joystick direction controls both actions); a rotary stick is far more effective in these kinds of games, in my opinion. The monitors for these types of overhead games are quite rare now. A friend of mine (whom has built a replica of said monitor) claims the only true way to experience a game like IW is through one of them. I reckon it's like an audiophile insisting on playing records to elicit the true sounds of a track. Speaking of sounds, IW is nothing to write home about. In fact, it's quite bad; there is nothing memorable about the audio. As far as I know, this isn't playable on MAME (please, please correct me if I'm wrong). The original was ported to virtually every second and third generation console ever made. As imagined, all ports control horribly due to the control bit mentioned above. It is cool SNK devoted so much attention to IW to the extent of making it a franchise though. Ralf and Clark got two sequels and SNK got them in on the act of the King of Fighters. Leona was introduced as a result of Ralf and Clark's story advancement (in King of Fighters). I believe IW quietly came full circle when Leona (remember, a spinoff) starred in her own version of Metal Slug. Even though the version was just a mobile game, it's pretty neat when a spinoff from a forgotten shooter has enough influence to steal the attention from SNK's current run 'n' gun cash cow.

Ikari Warriors appears for the arcade (co-op), second and third gen consoles (some solo, some co-op) including computers, and basic phones (solo). Check out the remixed track by luisedgarf enclosed at the bottom.
Shameless Rambo references. Notice the American machines are Tradewest branded.
A clear nod to the Tank games by SNK. Maybe Nezca got the evacuation idea here?
If this game wasn't hard enough, you actually have limited ammo.

Hmm, Ikari Warriors huh, tried it out, seems cool and all, but its really brutal as I've remembered playing it, even the NES Ver. takes forever to complete (even with the continue code, lol). But its good in its own right from something in the 80-90's or something like that.

Also, different GotW posting style? Why isn't done the same way Muri did it, looks more professional that way, but I guess this was done just for a quick write-me-up, lol.
Before I played this game in the arcade or on the NES I had it for PC. It was on an old 256 VGA... that version was even harder than the NES or arcade. But, yeah I loved this game. It's not something that I enjoy playing nowadays, but I did enjoy it 20 years ago. I thought Time Soldiers was much better.
