Ultra Street Fighter IV

I used to enjoy unlocking them. I had an enforced break from video games between the SNES and the Playstation and the first fighting game I played after SFII on SNES was Tekken 3 on Playstation. I remmeber we thought it was incredible and were playing it loads and then one day it said 'You have unlocked Brian'. And we got this whole new character we didnt even know about! It did seem amazing at the time.

But it's just that every fighting game does that now, and I no longer have the time to grind through in one-player mode to unlock every character. Also it's common knowledge what the hidden chacters are. So now you tend to feel a bit annoyed that they don't just give you these characters to start with. I think Killer Instinct on XBone that is free to play but makes you pay for extra characters. If that game isnt any good it's in trouble.

It would be quite cool in a way if you had more skill-based targets to aim for to unlock characters - a bit like some of the achievements or the Trials on SFIV. Also players would strengthen areas of their game by working to unlock them. They could perhaps keep some of the more advanced characters hidden until you have mastered the simpler ones, that sort of thing.

Maybe it is a bit of an outdated concept, mostly because everyone will already know who the locked characters are, as you pointed out. I had a blast unlocking everything in MVS2 on Dreamcast back in the day partially because I really didn't know who all was in the game. But when I bought the XBLA version with everything already unlocked I barely played it. Outside of unlocking characters and stages the game had zero single player value, and the XBLA version did nothing for that. Sure, that's not what they were going for, but after that experience I have definitely been more careful about what downloadable fighters I buy.

So again for me it comes down to adding in other things to do for a single player experience. Story mode, mission modes, other unlockable things...

I played SF4 when it first came out and thought it was alright... until every Akuma player I defeated 'rage quitted' an destroyed my points rating in the process. B&stards!

Anyway, bought SSFIV, just to see what Capcom did with certain key character transitions (i.e. SFIII characters) and bought the update 'AE'... just because. However, it's never been played since the time I opened it just to see what Capcom did with SF4 incarnations of Yun & Yang.

No doubt, I'll do the exact same again with this version; Ultra SFIV. Seems Capcom are keen to recoup their losses made with the tragedy of SFxTKN, eh? That is all Ultra can really be about in my eyes, as AE was touted as the final version originally, before SFxTKN tanked! Wink

Good work btw RiKo with regards to your personal progress in SF4. I watched a video of you somewhere as Juri vs Evil Ryu. I thought you played VERY well vs that players boring and rather rigid/typical Shoto character. Keep up the good work Thumbs Up

You lose points now (in SSFIV AE at least) if you quit which will hopefully discourage people from quitting. I never get why it's called rage-quitting, its really just people cheating and blaming it on being angry.

I know about the points firsthand because I literally lost *all * my points from my Wi-Fi connection being dodgy (this was because of a new router that's actually meant to be more powerful than the old one!). To start off I would lose about 100PP per disconnection then after about 5 disconnectons I just lost all my remaining PP. And when I had 0PP I started to lose BP!

Now I have a 5% disconnection rate which is a total lie because it's only 5% if you measure it on say the last 400 matches. Before that I had almost zero disconnections, and I know I have played over 2000 matches.

Thank you very much. With Juri i actually like playing against Shoto (especially Ryu and Ken) players best because she has so many ways to counter their projectiles. I think I have got better since then, I am still not proper good though. I only get to play about 1 and half hours every 4 days but I never stop playing so hopefully I will keep improving.

What fighting games do you play online now Ninja?

Wow. Thats sucks btw re: modem issues. But don't forget, I'm sure there are many who suffer the same problem "ALL OVER THE WORLD. TRY AGAIN KID".

And... 2000 matches btw? Two THOUSAND! Jesus. I'd be lucky if I scraped 200 since SFIV came out.

At the moment, I don't play any fighting games online RiKo. Someone wanted me an online game (ironically) the other evening, so we ended up facing off on that HDRemix game. It was horrible though. I didn't enjoy one minute of it and, for the record, I was winning most of the time Wink

I suppose it is deserved really (the loss of points) because it must piss the people on the other end off. Once it happened just after a guy had Ultra-ed me at the end of the first round. It must have looked like I was cheating really bad.

I love the game Grin I do get the feeling you'd still kick my ass though. I think I am 2100+ matches. I do often come across people who have played 5000 or more. PP seems to be the best indicator of quality though because many people with less matches can be really good, esp if they practice a lot. My PP usually averages around 600 with Juri (when I'm not losing it), which isn't that impressive. the better players are much higher.

I have never played HDremix, I think Kaz was playing that for a bit. One day I hope to get online with Merlin on Breakers Revenge. I really want to play that online.

Don't be so sure. I haven't played this game properly since SF4 first arrived in '09. I bought the sequels just to see how Capcom translated certain characters into 3D. An expensive habit... I know Cool

You're not missing anything re: HDRemix. It's funny... SF2 used to be a game I played religiously in my youth, year in - year out. Now I really do NOT enjoy playing it whatsoever. I have a real disdain for most of the characters. I really don't like a lot of them anymore. I don't enjoy using the majority and, I certainly enjoy facing them even LESS.

Breakers/Revenge is a very good game. You're right to want to strive for online matches as your ultimate goal in life Grin

I don't hate any of the characters yet but I will say some of the characters can be quite annoying to play against like Blanka and Vega. I find it really hard to play SF2 since playing SF4. My friend has SFII on his Wii, so I've played it at his house recently My main problem with it is how quickly the matches are over. Land about 4 heavy hits or a couple of combinations and it's all over. I do remember when I first started playing SFIII, I thought the life bars were too long though!

Have you played Battle Fantasia at all? I remmeber the designers said they were trying to imagine how a sequel to SFIII would play, and that's the game they came up with. The guy who designed SFIV is on record as saying it (Battle Fantasia) was a big inspiration for SFIV. I've never played it myself though.

Yes SFIV revived the whole genre in the mainstream by being awesome Thumbs Up

I do have the 3DS version, it didn't cost me much. It's pretty amazing considering. I haven't spent much time on it because I normally only play games at home and I have the 360 version. I always play in 2D but the 3D effect is nice, although I think it's not quite as smooth in 3D. The only concession really is that I don't think most of the backgrounds are animated .

Bad points - there's a horrible mode designed to show off the 3D effect where you fight at a strange angle into the screen and also you can do an Ultra/Super just by pressing the touch pad which takes the skill out of it and means anyone can do them extra fast. So it changes the game a bit.

I do have a couple of Mario games and VVVV (which is really good) and also I like playing original gameboy games on mine just because you save the high score tables Smile it's a nice little machine, the 3DS

hate those too, I remember Rival Schools has the Super Moves mapped to just one button automatically. Even in vanilla SSFIV there's a button for all 3 kicks and one for all three punches as standard. I refuse to use them. I was actually terrible at doing ultra's when I started, and even now I often fluff them but that's part of the risk/reward thing. The more you play the less it happens, people should just accept not everything comes to you on a plate. Imagine if there was a button for doing a dragon punch? people would be up in arms about that I'm sure.

Ono just confirmed that the fifth new character is female.

That means my guess that it's one of the dolls is still possible! The internet seems all but sure that it's Karin, but that's because the internet doesn't remember that we were already told it's someone who has never been in a fighting game at all. Silly internet.

Is that true, re: a fighting game FULL STOP... or just has never been in Street Fighter before?

Can you clarify (with source if poss).

Cheers Cool

Never been in a fighting game at all.

A lot of people online keep mentioning that they said it's someone new to Street Fighter, but everyone seems to be forgetting this part.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Santamu!

I've been watching the location tests for Ultra SFIV on Youtube and haven't been that excited. Feels and looks very much like an update - a bit like how AE was. I think Posion looks interesting, I like 'her' quick fireballs. but not sure about Rolento, and Hugo is just what you expect really. Haven't seen other characters yet.

It definitely does look like an update but unfortunately I will not be able to resist getting it...

Capcom revealed that the fifth character has appeared in the comics. That still means the dolls are possible, as are Gouken's daughter (who looks like Yuri Sakazaki), and Ibuki's friend Sarai. Sarai has not been trained yet by the time SFIV takes place but most people seem to believe she's the front runner now. It still makes sense considering Sean wasn't fully trained yet in SFIII.

rob7979
Like you, I probably won't be able to resist but this is definitely a case of over hype on the new character, whoever it is, given the length of the reveal it is bound to be a disappointment.

So my girl Santamu didn't make is but at least I'm getting a new Doll.

YouTube Video

Decapre revealed as the fifth new character in Ultra Street Fighter IV.

The initial reaction on the internet seems to be butthurtedness, but it's Capcom so that's the only emotion the internet is allowed to have it seems. If Capcom does anything at all the internet hates it. Even if it's exactly what they asked for. (The same could be said about Sega, but I digress).

Personally, I'm psyched! I've always been a big fan of the doll storyline ever since Cammy's introduction in SSFII. Getting more info on it was one of the many awesome things about SFA3 for me. Back then I had an idea for an action game starring Cammy that really fleshed out the entire doll storyline, and since that will never happen this is probably the closest I'm gonna get (Canon Spike not withstanding).

Apparently she's a charge character though. While I've warmed up to chargers over the years, they're still not my preference.

EDIT: Now that I've watched the video of Combofiend demoing her she looks amazing! I can't wait to play as her! I haven't played since vanilla so for me there are 19 new characters and I'm pretty sure she'll be the first one I try to learn.

I don't know that storyline at all but I am wondering why she has pretty much the same moves as Cammy? Cammy even has a costume that looks like that already.

www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/cammypants580.jpg

Looks like Capcom being lazy again to me. Still could have been worse we could have got Ultra Evil Ryu....

So far I think the most interestiong fighters are Poison and Elena. Rolento and Hugo both look potentially annoying.

I am worried they will over-complicate the game with this version. Super (AE) was perfect to me, and now they are giving us the red focus (seems unnecessary since the focus system is already deep), extra ultra options (another added complication) and the option of using whatever version character we want. The best SF's have been the ones which are simple yet deep not the ones which are complicated.

Yeah, I was so disappointed after the final fight when they showed the 5th character announcement. Not a Clammy fan, but hey I guess I don't have to play as her either.
