Sonic and Nintendo's series.

Yeah. I pretty much already posted this question in another website, but I would like to hear what you guys think.

Anyways, something that has been bugging me for a while now is that people HATE the newer Sonic games for straying from the Sonic series conventions (look at Adventure 1 and 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, etc), yet there's not much on an outcry over Nintendo's series when they stray from their conventions. I can understand people giving the later Sonic games flak for doing so, yet Nintendo's series gets off scot-free.


Sonic:

Has a stereotypical anime-ish anti-hero (Shadow.)

Bloated cast of characters

Gave Shadow guns (Shadow the Hedgehog).

Gave Sonic a sword (Sonic and the Black Knight).

Rushed a main series Sonic game without playtesting it (Sonic 06.)

Turned Sonic into a werehog (Sonic Unleashed).



Mario:

Gave Mario a squirt gun (SM Sunshine).

There wasn't a 2D Mario game for around 18 years (SMW2 is more of a Yoshi's Island game.)

Made the 3D Mario games into fetchquests (getting the stars in SM64 and Mario Galaxy 1-2, shine sprites in Sunshine in order to progress through the game.)

Barely any effort put into the NSMB games compared to the older 2D Marios and most of the 3D Marios.

Turned Luigi into a coward (Luigi's Mansion).

Made NSMB2 revolve around collecting coins even though the Wario Land games had that type of gameplay first.



Zelda:

Turned Link into a cartoony little kid (Wind Waker and the DS Zelda games).

The series turned from an Arcade/RPG hybrid into a PC Adventure type game.

Ghirahim.

Tingle.

Trains were in one of the games (Spirit Tracks).

Overreliance on puzzles.



Metroid:

Samus's monologues.

Linear gameplay.

Samus gets scared of Ridley even though she defeats him time and time again.

Samus is submissive towards some dude named Adam.



For Metroid, all of those things were in Other M.

The changes Mario has received over the years have been gradual. I can't speak for the Galaxy games, as I've never played them, but I've read and made my own observation they're just glorified M64s with funny mechanics. As far as, "Barely any effort put into the NSMB games compared to the older 2D Marios and most of the 3D Marios," wouldn't that make NSMB more similar to SMB (thus, no real innovation on the part of NSMB, hence no big change)? If anything, the persistent complaint I hear (among retro gaming friends) is Mario hasn't really changed for the past 15 or so years. Parents and the Nintendo faithful seem to like this; everyone else: meh or disapproval.

Believing in a Sonic utopia sucks because it will never happen. The original "dream team," a.k.a. Sonic Team, has disbanded since around the time M64 came out! Some are retired even. Sure, a few stay in the team, but it has never been like in the early nineties. I believe realistic Sonic fans are right to expect something different, but faithful to the original games. The keyword is "faithful" (Colors and Generations are the closest iterations to this expectation).

As far as Metroid straying from conventions, Metroid Prime is a perfect example. We haven't had a proper Metroid game that plays like the classics since Zero Mission, and that was a remake!

Then again, more of the same isn't always a good thing. Without all of the experimentation in the Sonic series throughout the years we wouldn't have ended up with Sonic Generations.

And I find it hilarious when people complain about Shadow or Silver by saying that Sonic shouldn't have a new furry friend in every game like adding new characters to the series strictly started in Sonic Adventure. Let's see...

Sonic 2: Tails
Sonic 3: Knuckles
Sonic CD: Amy
Knuckles Chaotix: All of the Chaotix who aren't named Knuckles
Sonic the Fighters: A shit load of characters
Sonic the Comic: Holy shit so many characters!

I'm sure I missed some and obviously I was more joking there towards the end, but the point remains. Adding new characters to each Sonic game is a tradition that started with the first sequel, which also happens to be the game most widely heralded as the best game in the series.

I kind of went off on a tangent there, but the main point I wanted to make is that change is good. Perhaps that's the underlying reason why I like Sonic more than Mario. While I do long for a proper 2D Metroid, a top down 2D Zelda (we haven't had one since Minnish Cap!), a new Wonderboy designed like Monster World IV... the list could go on... I'm perhaps more interested in new ideas being brought into these series.

A 3D Metroid focused on non-linear exploration with a creeping fear that certain death is always around the corner.

A 3D Zelda that isn't just Ocarina of Time with a new coat of paint. Exploring the world in an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game is oddly more reminiscent of exploring Zelda 1's world map than any 3D Zelda game with the possible exception of Wind Waker, if you're into oceans.

A 3D Wonderboy game. That's seriously my entire pitch. Take the Monster World formula, make it 3D, keep it colorful and cartoony. With tight combat, great level design that the series is already known for, and a world full of secrets... I would buy this game so hard. Also, I mean an actual 3D game, not 2D with 3D characters. If it's going to have 2D gameplay I'd rather it be sprites. Of course, any new Wonderboy at all would make me explode with happiness.
