GCW Zero: New handheld puts the Neo Geo X to the test
Chiba3010
This reply comes late as it took some time to become familiar with navigating the system's OS, it's connectivity with other devices and finding enough applications and games to really begin putting it through it's paces.

I'll follow up with a more in-depth reply soon but for now I can certainly say I'm pleased and impressed with the GCW Zero. FPS-wise, it runs ported titles like Quake 2 and Hexen 2 smoothly and seamlessly and I'm going to be tracking down the Half-Life port next.

Regarding console emulation, Genesis, SNES, Master System, NES, and Atari VCS perform wonderfully. The Zero even runs the notoriously emulation-resistant Starfox beautifully with audio bitrate set high and nary a dropped frame to be found. Haven't tried out PSX emulation yet.

Arcade emulation on my console is currently limited to an unreleased WIP build of Final Burn Alpha (MAME is also too early for public release and I've yet to explore the likely channels for WIP version to try out). FBA already runs a number of Sega's super-scaler titles like Outrun, Space Harrier and Super Hang-On amazingly well, with smooth framerates and solid audio synch, though occasional clicks and pops can be heard- hopefully to be resolved before this version of FBA is released. The CPS2 and Neo Geo emulation I've seen thus far is near perfect.

Bottom line: The Zero already outperforms my overclocked Caanoo by a mile- there's no comparison. Regarding Neo emulation, pre-release FBA on the Zero already looks just as good as anything I've seen of the Neo Geo X and could easily end up surpassing it when development is finished.

I'll share impressions of the Zero's physical hardware and control interface soon- they're largely positive as well.

Great to know. I would love to have this handheld, but I think I'll wait just a little bit longer until more Arcade Games are emulated for it.

I own a Caanoo too. I've read somewhere that GCW is not perfect with snes and genesis.
You really think it is?
I ask you because you say it's better than Caanoo, but Caanoo to my eyes works perfectly with snes, genesis, sega cd... so, as i'm having different feedbacks, i would like to know if it's worth buying it.

Hmmm, don't know why anyone would say that about Genesis and SNES emulation on the Zero, at least using the emus I have, since its virtually perfect in my experience (stated with confidence as someone who owned both). Shrug

Thus far I have no nitpicks to speak of. Smile

Quick Final Burn Alpha updates:

PGM emulation typically runs between 30-50 fps in the titles I've tested. Not too shabby, and much less choppy than the CPS3 games.

All working Neo Geo games, Metal Slug X, AOF3 and Last Blade 2 among them, run perfectly with sound set to the highest quality. Always 60fps, no dropped frames whatsoever. A few games I tried didn't work (yet) including, sadly, MS3 and Garou. Otherwise, flawless Neo performance!

Some serious lag/slowdown/glitching issues with a number of Irem and Taito titles in this pre-release FBA build- don't know what's going on there but it's nothing the Zero should have much trouble with so I hope it'll be improved upon for the fully-refined public FBA release.

It's enough to convince me to buy one... but i think it's out of stock now...

Thanks for posting your thoughts about the GCW Chiba. Good to hear it's lived up to your expectations. Sounds like a great handheld. If I didn't already have a Caanoo I would definitely buy a GCW too. I rarely use my Caanoo, normally only when traveling so it doesn't make sense for me to also buy a GCW. The games I mostly play on the Caanoo run very well on that handheld.

Update: This handheld is phenomenal and doesn't disappoint. Mame4all and FBA have been publicly released for the Zero and run very, very impressively. My Caanoo has become a paperweight at this point, there's just no comparison. Also been playing lots of PC Engine CD, Sega CD and ScummVM titles lately. I finally have Garou working, too!
The Zero is now on sale at ThinkGeek.com (among other resellers) for those interested in a retail release unit. Thumbs Up
