My First Vectrex Game

.....actually doesn't exist yet, since i am still learning what I am doing with the system. Everything is a bit of a struggle at the moment.

These are what I am using to help me, a 6809 Book from the early 80s and a listing of Ville Krumlinde's Thrust game for Vectrex (he kindly made the source code public), both very helpful.

I have finished my first program which i wrote to get used to moving objects around the screen and to get used to writing in assembly language, of which i don't have any real experience. The Vectrex's processor runs at 1.5 Mhz so it's incredibly slow by today's standards although for it's time, it was quite nippy.

My program bounces 20 squares and 20 dots around the screen.

My video recording program didn't really pick up the graphics too well and slows it down a little but you get the idea, in real life the display is very clear and is very smooth too.

My game won't involve squares and is going to be a platform game. There is only one on Vectrex as far as i know.

Good work RiKo. I imagine even a relatively simple program like squares bouncing around would be quite a lot of work to program. Keep us updated!

Off to a good start RiKo! Looks cool, with a number of core programming parameters in place and running smoothly. Thumbs Up Makes me want to fire mine up and go for a round of Minestorm or Web Wars!

Looking forward to seeing your game progress from here into something that can offer Vectrex a new 2D-platformer and alternative to that genre's sole representative of the genre on the system, Spike. Wink

Vectrex is one of the few systems I've never played. I would love to get my hands on one. Nice work by the way.

@Daraku: The Vectrex is awesome- perfectly captures the spirit of "true" old-school arcade gaming. It has a relatively small library of *official* releases, and quite a few of them are good to excellent games. The vector graphics really make the system stand out, offering something different from, to this very day, any other home console. Visuals are impressive and still look uniquely cool, enough so to attract the attention of friends of mine who are totally dedicated to current-gen consoles. If a COD: Black Ops 2 addict in 2013 will stop, stare at a game system made in 1982 and say "Holy shit, that looks fuckin' awesome! What is it?", you know it's pretty damn special. Grin

Hope you get a chance to play/buy one at some point and experience it for yourself. And trust me, emulation doesn't do the Vectrex justice. You really have to play the real thing to fully appreciate it. It literally just... glows. Headbang

Yeah some systems I just don't want to bother with emulation, Vectrex is one of them.

Thanks Merlin Thumbs Up yes was a lot harder than I thought it would be. After I read the 6809 book i wrote the program in a few days but nothing worked how I expected and it took a few months in the end! I did learn a lot though.....

Thanks Chiba Thumbs Up yes it does resemble Minestorm a bit! I hope I can make a platformer. The only difficulty I see (other than me being a novice) is that drawing a lot of platforms would take a fair amount of (processor) time. You have to redraw the whole screen every frame. So I'm not sure how much detail I would be able to get on the screen. Will do my best though.

Thanks Daraku Thumbs Up Def try and get one, one day. besides the vector graphics its also a really nice system because it feels like a little arcade machine, everything moves very smoothly and all the games have arcade style sound effects. It was unique back then and still is
