The GCE Vectrex!
Chiba3010
Love this system! Totally one of a kind with vector graphics and fun, old-school gameplay that still impresses three decades later. Clap

Anyone else a fan of this console?

Awesome Chiba, is that yours? i think i can see you in it. Minestorm is a top game. I am a big fan of Vectrex, i am actually trying to make a game for it at the moment, which is why i am not here so much. I have no idea what i am doing though - so far i have only managed to get a moving dot on the screen!

Me and one of my friends had a great time playing Space Wars on Vectrex in 2 player mode. Thrust is probably my favourite game which was a newer homebrew game. is superb. I also like the car game (Hyperchase). Having everything drawn in vector graphics which glow, just makes it special.

Just randomly i think this below is great. Just the music and the fact that the letters are actually just gaps between lines (Since the Vectrex can only draw lines). Great game too.

@RiKo: Awesome to find another Vectrex fan here! Thumbs Up Yep- the one in the pic is mine! I sometimes poke fun at my wife by reminding her that the system is older than she is. The Protector/YASI tech demo is really impressive (though the typical Vectrex "buzz" noise increases to high pitched screech while it runs), as are both of the games on the cart. YASI is dead-on and Protector is so very, very close to it's "inspiration", Defender. I also love Web Wars, Polar Rescue, Fortress of Narzod, Star Castle, Bedlam and Pole Position. My game library so far (all official releases complete with their original overlays):

Armor... Attack
Bedlam
Berserk
Cosmic Chasm
Fortress of Narzod
Hyperchase
Minestorm (obviously)
Polar Rescue
Pole Position (overlay is pretty scratched up but intact)
Protector/YASI
Scramble
Solar Quest
Space Wars
Star Castle (overlay in similar condition to Pole Position's)
Star Trek
Starhawk
Web Wars

Thrust, Vectrexians and Vecmania (the one with the Phoenix clone "Birds of Prey" ) are the next games I want to track down next.

Very cool to hear you're working on a homebrew Vectrex project! I'd love to hear about any progress updates or accounts of your experiences trying to program for the system.

is amazing and very smooth. Even though it shouldnt work that well with the narrow screen, it actually does.

you have a great collection there Chiba Thumbs Up, I know some people dont like the overlays but i love them, makes the games look a lot better if they are in colour. I wish all the homebrew games came with them. I think i have all the games that were orig released in the UK. I don't think i have Polar Rescue though.

i was going to make a thread about it but havent got round to it yet. Well it's actually a really nice system to program for (I find it hard cos i am a noob ). It's all open-source now so there's a lot of info on the net including some tutorials. I am using the Thrust-source code a lot to help me, since the guy who wrote that kindly put that on the net.

There is no seperate chip that handles the drawing of vectors so thats all done by the processor, so the more lines you draw on screen the less time you have to do everything else. Also clipping can be damm hard and takes up a lot of processor time, which means scrolling is not an easy thing to accomplish on the system.

I am thinking about making a platform game because there are very few on the system. Is Spike the only one?. I saw that John Donzilla (vectrex programmer) had a kind of a Mario Bros game running, well a very early demo. The control didnt look very good but it scrolled nicely. Mine will possibly be a vertically scrolling one - to suit the screen, or it might not scroll if that is beyond me!
