Monster Models!!
Chiba3010
In addition to drawing and oil painting, I also assemble and hand paint vinyl and resin monster modeling kits! I'm a lifelong Godzilla fanboy and just a few years ago started working on representations of my favorite "kaiju" (along with other city-destroying alumni). Yes, it's yet another expensive hobby- the best kits aren't cheap! Here are a few pics of kits I built and painted down to the finest detail:

Godzilla 1984 (TsFacto resin kit)
i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p488/Chiba3010/3326A720-E17A-4334-B1C3-1D85CFD45CA5-328-00000028B1743B6A.jpg

Godzilla 2000 (Daimos resin kit)

Godzilla 2002 (TsFacto resin kit)

King Kong 1933 (personally customized Geometric resin kit)

Godzilla 1964 (Kaiju Freaks resin kit). I just began assembling this kit today, should be completed and painted soon!

I'll post more pics of these and others if anyone would be interested in checking them out! Smile

Those monster models look really good Chiba and you did a great job painting them. Would be nice to see some more pics.

It's been a long time since I watched any but when I was younger I used to watch quite a few
of those Japanese monster movies on TV. Mothra was always my favourite monster. Do you have a model of Mothra?

Chiba3010
Thanks, Merlin! Glad you like them. Grin A few more kits:

Godzilla 1964 (Kaiyodo vinyl kit)
i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p488/Chiba3010/68414D75-A424-41E9-8EB1-7DDA9387D63C-692-00000124552FC738.jpg

Godzilla 1975 (Billiken vinyl kit)
i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p488/Chiba3010/25781059-D22E-4B7D-8AFE-003A648C88A5-692-000001247C047995.jpg

I'll post some more pics of other members of the Kaiju menagerie very soon. And yes, I do have a Mothra model! It's yet to be finished though, being a huge and very challenging vinyl kit that I've temporarily set aside to focus on less time-consuming builds. When I finish it I'll most certainly share it here. Wink

I really like the 1984 godzilla model Thumbs UpThe 2000 one looks cool but doesnt look like godzilla as i think of him and the 2002 version looks like the 1984 version mated with King Kong!

really cool models though Chiba.

Thanks, RiKo! The '84 is a personal favorite as well. Smile Yeah, the suit design created for "Godzilla 2000" was a huge departure from all that preceded it. Biggest overhaul of the entire film series, really. It's very cool but can't compare with the best of the old-school, classic designs from earlier films.

The 2002 suit design does have a bit of an "Apezilla" look to it now that you mention it! LOL Here's a pic from a different angle that should exonerate Kong from any accusations of being the "baby daddy". Wink

Very nice models you've got there and great paintjobs as well, you really got the colors right and you're very good at detailing. I have to break out my Guyver III vinyl model and paint it one day. I love Gojira, but I haven't seen that many movies (7). Keep up the good work!

I think they all look very good but the 1984 TsFacto Godzilla is also my favourite so far.

Good to hear you have a Mothra kit in your collection Chiba. With Mothra being quite colourful and it being a larger model I imagine that will look impressive when it's finished. I thought this model looked really good too:

This thread has put me in the mood for watching some of those monster movies again.

Very awesome Chiba. You should try doing a Gamera kit. But I suppose being a Godzilla fan, that would be be sacrilege.

@Cthulhu: Could you post pics of your Guyver model should you get the chance to finish it? I'd love to see your work, too. Thumbs Up Thanks for your compliments! Yeah, painting the finer details of these kits can be quite challenging and takes a lot of patience but it's well worth the effort in the end.

As far as the films are concerned, unless you're an absolute Gojira diehard (like me), some are definitely of a higher viewing priority than others...

@Merlin: That's a fantastic Mothra sculpt, I wish I had that one! It's by Atsushi Asai who always produces excellent work. The resin Godzilla '64 kit I'm currently working on is actually an Asai sculpt itself!
The vinyl Mothra kit I do have is a Paradise kit originlly by Tadao Inoue:

http://www.kaijuk...mothra.htm

It's very nice, but being vinyl it is slightly less texture-rich than the resin lit you linked to.

@2D: Lol, no. Gamera is also a kindered kaiju and certainly not off limits... Just have yet to find a really nice kit of Daiei's flying turtle.
For the record, the first two Gamera movies were actually pretty good and the totally revamped 90's "trilogy" of Shosuke Kaneko-directed Gamera films are fucking amazing and totally worth your attention. Thumbs Up

More soon! Wink

WIP pic of the '64 kit. Now fully assembled, base-coat painted with no color or detailing yet other than the eyes and teeth. Still, its looking nice already and I'm shooting for a dead-on likeness when this is completed.

Well, that'll take a really long time before I'll finish it because I still have a huge amount of miniatures to paint for two different gaming systems (Strange Aeons and Warhammer 40K). For bigger models, I love to use my Airbrush for the larger parts, but for the smaller parts I still use detail brushes and drybrushes.

The movies I've seen are:
Godzilla (1954)
Godzilla vs. Biollante (1998)
Godzilla vs. King Ghidora (1991)
Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)
Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999)
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)

I really love those newer movies...never seen the older ones, but I don't like the look of those and some seem too comical.

The '64 already looks good...you've got his eyes exactly the way they should be. I'm looking forward to the end results.

The Godzilla films are generally categorized chronologically into:

The "Showa" Era (1954-1975)

The "Heisei" Era (1984-1995)

The "Millenium" Era (2000-2004)

My personal favorites which I recommend highly are the Japanese subtitled versions of:

Gojira ('54)
Godzilla vs. Mothra ('64)
Godzilla vs. Monster Zero aka Invasion of Astro Monster ('65)
Return of Godzilla ('84)
Godzilla vs. Biollante ('89)
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 ('93)
Godzilla vs. Destroyah ('95)
Godzilla 2000
GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack ('01)
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla ('03)

@Cthulhu: The older films I listed are the best of the era, not overly comedic and worth checking out!

Oh- and one more WIP shot of the '64 kit. Limbered up my hands and fingers before commencing today's paintwork by playing Samurai Shodown 4 for half an hour. Wink Still a lot more detail work to be done, the next pic will be of the finished model!

Yeah I know dewd, I have the three 90's Gamera films on DVD, box set, they are awesome. You really can't get better when it comes to Jap monster flicks. I also have a few 60's/70's Gamera films, but they are just cheesey fun.

If you can believe it, Amazon is currently selling the 90's trilogy on blu-ray for just under $7.99!! I received mine in the mail earlier week and watched "Guardian of the Universe" and "Advent of Legion" back-to-back this afternoon. Selling all three films together on blu-ray at that price makes me doubt the publisher's sanity but its truly an offer I couldn't refuse. Wink

I'm quite pleased with how this one turned out. In the future, I might find some aspects that could be further refined but for now I'm calling it finished! Smile

If so inclined, let me know what you guys think of this project now that its done.Cool

Thanks, Cthulhu! I don't know when I'll get around to working on my next kit, I currently have 4 to complete. Probably going to focus on a really big vinyl sculpt of Mothra '64. It's proven itself a bitch to assemble already and will take a very long time to paint but hey- if it wasn't more fun than frustration I wouldn't be doing it!

That's exactly my problems with vinyl kits...they're aweful to build with lots of warping. Had to use a blow dryer to get everything back into the right shape.
Nowadays I paint miniatures for two specific games (Warhammer 40K and mostly Strange Aeons). Pictures of my stuff can be seen in my painting blog thread at the Lead Adventures forum. There might be some gruesome/ offensive paintjobs for some people in there, so be warned (horror based miniature game with gory looking Zombies, Ghouls and various other weird stuff).
