Neo-Geo a failed console
Henrythefirst
For sure if you want Arcade 1:1 at home without having a cab ( which is like an arcade at home ) the Aes is definitly the one and only system which can serve. No cheap copy or dadürion just the orginal game. And for folks like me when you dont have the space or willing for a big cab then its the way.If you want a result to count then let the users cote dor it

I have never actually heard anyone say the Neo Geo was a failed system, but i can imagine some idiots do! The story i read said that SNK originally intended the AES as a rental only system - so the high price of games didnt matter so much on a rental. but they were surprised when people wanted to buy the systems, so they decided to release it as a premium home system. I dont know if this is true or not but it suggest the AES surpassed SNK's expectations. Besides there was no way with games costing £150+ they were positioing it as a normal home system.

nice though it is now - yes the CD had to be a failure really. I'm sure when it came out the Playstation and Saturn were on the scene. i can imagine it was hard to get excited by a load of games from a few years earlier being released in inferior form. I have some magazines form the time and even the magazines struggle to get excited by it.

@Neo Geo Man. That's ok. Smile It was just a slight misunderstanding. No need to apologize.

The important thing is we're all agreed the Neo Geo definitely wasn't a failed system. Andy

NEO-GEO man
Certainly not

The MVS was massively successful. The aes was a success in an initial specialist market space. The following (western)marketing approach that tried to push the aes as asubstitute to snes/megadrive was a failure.

However, there was nothing else that could have been done in this respect - the success and limitation of the system was really based around cartridge price.

Despite the system cost falling the cost of the large cartridges was prohibitive to many households. But snk was extremely healthy leading up into the second half of the 90's.

What failed snk is their inability to adapt as a developer to transition away from the arcade market to the home market as a primary source of income.

The neo cd was poorly conceived and in general cd technology was unfortunately slow to develop even into the growth period of the later 32 bit generation systems. It was ultimately a distraction.

The development on the hyper 64 was a crippling failure and completely ignored the growing home market.

Ironically the neo geo pocket was supposedly all about the home market, but was a staggering failure to appreciate snk's viability, existing software strengths and attractiveness to third parties [their liscensing terms were utterly misplaced towards western development/business mentalities].

These projects hobbled snk who now could not afford another role of the dice and locked in on their still viable 16 bit base.

An erratic and problematic attempt to port games was made, but in 3 short years over 98->00 snk lost more and more ground. Misguided as a hardware house, and out of depth as a software developer/publisher they would survive rather than compete.

Glossing over 3d slug, maximum impacts and wasted sam sen ... That they did any of this is testament to the enduring success of the 16 bit neo geo in my opinion...

... a success that saw the establishment of a back catalogue and franchises which continue to garner them sales and despite their continued struggles have given them a chance to establish themselves as a small but respected publishing house in a now
evolved and diversified home market place.

Meh, it never was as "famous" as Genesis or SNES, here in the states. So it was a relative failure when you look at gaming as a whole. But anybody who knows anything about gaming, beyond the surface, knows the NG.
