Interesting SNK Interview
RiKo
Quite interesting SNK mini-interview, not sure when this is exactly (found it on my computer with some old scans) but it's from an old issue of GamesTM magazine

(click to view and click again to enlarge)

Tells you why 2D games are often released in compilation packs on newer consoles, and this on MVS:

We've reached the point that after just one day of release there's a pirate copy on the market...That's why we gave up....After 15 years of using this system - it's rather old fashioned, the capacity is maximised and the protection is very weak

(admins, let me know if you want this and i will send it to NG4L for the site archive)

Interesting read, RiKo! Thumbs Up

Wow- so MS3 was not "of high enough quality" for a U.S. release on Sony's platform, huh? Way to piss all over one of the brightest gems in a franchise that redefined the genre, SCEA... douchebags. Thumbs Down

Regarding the retirement of the MVS, it's painful to hear SNK discuss finally pulling the plug on the hardware that put them on the map and would bring them shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Capcom and Konami. A damn shame piracy was so influential in critically destabilizing the SNK of old and quickening the end of MVS development. The MVS's vulnerability to bootlegging wouldn't emerge as a legitimate threat until a decade after it's release and little could be done to fight it- the downside to its famously long life cycle. The creative masterminds of SNK could have probably released a few more fantastic games had they not been bought out and driven to bankruptcy. Even after rising from the ashes as SNK Playmore, the quality and unique character of their releases was never fully recovered.

The MVS hardware's limitations probably had much less to do with it's abandonment. Shifting development to the Atomiswave provided rather unimpressive audio/visual advancement in SNK's releases. IMO, KOF and Metal Slug often looked better on the AES.

Ditching the Atomiswave for Taito's "Type X" arcade boards was a smart move- KOF XIII does look damn sexy. Still, most of us wouldn't be NGFL members if we didn't regard the AES/MVS as the gold standard and SNK's finest effort!Smile

Yea I remember the whole thing about not being allowed to release games on the PS2 unless they were part of a "value bundle". It was ridiculous really, thankfully Microsoft were much more eager to let SNK release their games on the Xbox I think.

RiKo: Would love to add them, email them over to and let me know via pm when you do (as I don't look at my email too often) and I will post them! Thanks for the scans dude! Smile

yes dumbasses, their policy towards 2D games was pretty hostile at that time. I think they are more enlightened these days but i remember they wouldnt even allow Worms on PS1 initially because it was 2D and that later went on to become one of the best-selling games on that system.

i have read a quote in the recent past that said they wouldnt ever make another MVS game because of the piracy and they sounded quite bitter about it. Having said that the system *was* out of date for the massmarket, althoughy yes i think you are right they could have got a few more games out of it. It had a very long lifespan considering the date it was released. I think they needed to release another modular system that was actually good (ie not the Hyper 64). I would have loved some more more MVS games though!

NGDevteam's games dont seem to be available on Emulators yet? or are they? so maybe it is possible to beat the pirates (temporarily at least)

I'm a bit late here but just wanted to say thanks for the article RiKo. It was an interesting
read and it's good to get more stuff like this added to the site. If anyone has any other
interesting SNK articles they could scan it would much appreciated. Andy

Sorry Kaz i missed your post before. I might have some more scans soon so i will send them with those. I'll let you know when i do.

Yes i had Metal Slug 4 or 5 On Xbox1, although it seemed quite slow (just teh pace of the game) so i wasnt sure if it suffered from PAL syndrome or not. In the end i sold it because i decided i liked playing them on neo geo best.

no problem for the article Smile i am still amazed you could scan in the whole of those Neo Geo Freak magazines, that would take me about 4 days with my scanner!

Ah so it is on an emulator. Shame on the person who released it. I guess it wouldbt be so bad in a few years time when the game is no longer available but i can imagine it discouraging future releases on the system, if these new games are pirated.

Here is one I found related to two titles, but it's in Japanese. However, there are some interesting sketch artworks:

NEO-GEO man
Its not hard to copy a CD game made for such an old system, but at the end of the day it was more likely the CD getting used on an emulator, which is no big deal.

There is no dump of the carts as far as i know. It would be great if someone would hack the shooters and add a two player mode, bit ordinary on your own....
