I'm having a hard time getting into the NES. (Hardware-related, not games!)

Seriously. I am. I want to get an authentic one instead of a Famiclone because, well Famiclones always have some sort of issue with the game compatibility.

I've be wanting to get one of them for some time now. But, I've heard a lot of reports that the NES is unreliable mainly because of the pins or something like that (not exactly sure). I really don't want to have to replace or fix the pins because I'm kinda worried that I'll end up breaking the system trying to fix the pins. Plus, I don't want to have to blow on the cartridges and exhaust my lungs just trying to get a game to work. So, regular NES is out. I know there is a top-loader NES, but they can only accept RF and I don't know if my TV can even support it, so top-loader NES is out too.

Regular Famicoms are also out due to only accepting RF too. That just leaves the AV Famicom as the only option, but they're hard to find and they aren't cheap either. Even if I get a Famicom, is the voltage difference big enough to the point where I have to get a voltage converter?

You've arrived at the same conclusion as I did: get a AV Famicom. Yeah, they are more expensive than a beat-up old NES, but it's the best version of the hardware you can get. Have a look on eBay, you'd be surprised what you can get if you're not bothered about it being boxed.

I go to Maplin and get replacement 240v UK PSUs for whatever import machines I'm using. It's a lot neater and simpler than using step-downs.

My wife and I have three or four NES consoles and we never had any problems with those...only had to replace the pin thingy into which the cartridge goes, even my wife could do that so that wasn't difficult.

Only the regular NES systems have them. Most Top Loader NES systems only have RF and the ones that do have support for composite cables are very hard to find and probably weren't even sold in stores.

As for the Famicom, regular Famicoms only support RF, but there is an AV Famicom (which resembles the Top Loader), but they go for high prices.

NEO-GEO man
Doesnt the top loader have an 1145 in it and an RF stepdown coming off that? Ive never really looked into it.

There was one version of the top loader that used the same AV cord that the SNES used. I owned one and sold it before I knew the were rare. oh well... The toaster NES works just fine if you replace the 72-pin connector. The other thing you can do is disable the security chip (which is what gives most of the problems on the original hardware from what I understand).
