What's so good about Working Designs?
For a while now, I have been reading about the various games that they localized over the years. It's pretty interesting since they seem to be a precursor to Atlus and XSeed (Atlus was around before Working Designs, but I don't think they localized too many games until around the PSX days or later.) However, if there's one thing that kinda bothers me about Working Designs, it's that they seem to take A LOT of liberties with the games. Sometimes, they would often put in lame jokes, often sexual jokes (Albert Odyssey, Popful Mail, etc. I also heard that Magic Knight Rayearth may have some, but I'm not exactly sure.) Now, if sexual jokes were in the original versions, I don't really mind, but they really feel quite out of place otherwise and not in a good way.

Sometimes, it's not just the translation, but also the gameplay gets changed. Silhouette Mirage for example has the difficulty increased for whatever reason (even though it's a Treasure game lol). I'm not sure if any other games that WD localized had the gameplay changed though.

One thing I like about Working Designs is that they bring over games that probably nobody else would, but their translations of the games were a bit too cheesy IMO. I kinda feel that Atlus and XSeed both do a much better job of localizing games than WD. If anything, what's so good about Working Designs?

They were among the first to have competent, reasonably faithful translations in a time where game translations were either nonsensical or batshit insane (think Konami/Ultra's NES manuals), they were very dedicated to their fanbase (for ex, fighting tooth and nails to release Magic Knight Rayearth even though the US Sega didn't want it, an hard drive crash destroyed most of their progress and it was hugely outdated when it finally came out) and they made a point to pack their release with physical goodies.

of course, they're also contreversial for the reason you listed. I don't really have an opinion.
