Crossed Swords II discussion
Welcome to Game of the Week!

If there was ever a NeoGeo MVS title that felt more like it belonged on a console than in the arcade, it was ADK's epic Crossed Swords. ADK seemed to agree and released the sequel exclusively for the NeoGeo CD console.

Crossed Swords II

Genre: First Person Action
Players: 2
Released on: NeoGeo CD

Brief Description:

Crossed Swords II introduces a number of improvements to the original game. Tighter controls, deeper combat, and more colorful graphics combine to make a game that many say is better than the original.

"I haven't played it yet, but looks bad ass."

I consider CS an A-RPG, and I really enjoy it co-op. I don't see any reason why I wouldn't enjoy the sequel. I've heard the players can move freely to either side of the screen now, probably making the flow of action smoother. Also, this is one if the few games that does most of its loading before the actual gameplay.

Never played it.

I suppose I could try it on emu, but it's not the same as playing on real hardware, as we all know.

I wish I had a little extra dough, to buy a NGCD. This title would be first on my list, as 2P Crossed Swords is a blast. Me and my nephew do a Crossed Swords run about every month, it's one of my favorites. I can only imagine how fun CS2 is.

Merlin, you chode, when are you gonna invite me over so we can have go at this game?

Yeah, as far as NGCD exclusives go I think this one tops my most wanted list. And that's even if you still count IronClad. I only recently discovered the awesomeness of the original Crossed Swords though, so I'm not in a huge hurry to move right on to the sequel. I honestly didn't like the original for a long time but for some reason I kept loading it up to give it another try. One day the gameplay just clicked and I played it for a few hours straight. It's not as immediately accessible as most arcade games are designed to be, which is a negative initially, but once you get past that it's intense and extremely fun. The sequel looks like more of the same, but in this case I'm going to go ahead and assume that's a good thing.
The original eats quarters like a fat chick eats cake. I have no reason to believe this deviates from the COM's ruthlessness. Pfft

It was quite the same for me. For the first installment of the series I just needed some time to getting into, then the game turned out as great. I dare to say that the first game was the product that the boring 'Super Spy' originally should have been. A truly terrific 3rd Person Hack n' Slash made by ADK!

I'd like to play the sequel as well, from what I've heard so far it must be quite an improvement over the yet great predecessor. Now that I've got time during the holidays I might give it a shot.
Since the topic was brought up...

Most people seem to think that Crossed Swords 1 had a more "console feel" to it. Why exactly did you think this? Strange that SNK themselves made Crossed Swords 2, NGCD only. Maybe the game in the MVS form was just too much of a quarter hog.

Perhaps Crossed Swords 1 sold poorly in the arcade scene? Anybody know how to find out, factually, how each NG title fared in sales?

I know one thing for sure, had I seen Crossed Swords in the 90's, in my local arcade, when I was a kiddo... I would have been mesmerized. Maybe it's a good thing I never got to see Crossed Swords 1 during the Neo-Geo days... because I surely would have spent my entire weekly allowance, pumping quarter after quarter into the cab.

Good to see plenty of Crossed Swords love in this thread. Both titles are amongst my favourite Neo Geo games and wanting to play Crossed Swords 2 was my initial reason for buying an NGCD console. There are some improvements in the sequel with the choice of three characters, being able to move across the whole width of the screen in two player mode and also the addition of dashing and jumping. Although I do love Crossed Swords 2 and have put many hours into it I still prefer the original. I just prefer the level designs in the first game and it somehow seems that bit more epic the journey across the land of Belcana.

2D sure you're welcome to come round anytime for a few beers and some Crossed Swords 2 action! As for why the game wasn't released for MVS I think they must have felt it wasn't going to be all that popular in arcades. If it wasn't for the release of the NGCD system this could easily have ended up as an unreleased proto which is a scary thought considering how good the game is. I think it's quite likely that in the future people will make MVS and AES carts of this game. Either it'll be similar to what happened with Ironclad or someone will do a CD->MVS conversion just like Zintrick.
2-D, I believe it can feel like a console game because the progression is non-linear and it takes so long to finish. If you are a kid or unskilled grown up (not so well coordinated or intuitive), you can spend up to two hours reaching the end! The game has replay value since it has multiple paths. The combination of long length and variable paths would give it a console game feel to me.

I am always intrigued how this game looked like.

Me and my cousin used to play the original Crossed Swords countless times, experimenting on the effects of the various weapons. It's good to see the sequel expand the attributes of the new characters.
I thought this was interesting. Razoola is currently converting the game from CD to AES/MVS.

programming work is not 100% complete but both game modes are fully playable and SoftDIP's function correctly

I played it on the Dreamcast and on the Classic XBOX.

Oh wait, I actually played it on my Neo Geo CD when it worked also.

Pretty good for what it was.
