Welcome to Game of the Week!

A common misconception about the NeoGeo library is that it contains nothing but fighting games. While it does contain a lot of fighting games, the recent GOTW poll was created in part to show how much variety can be found on SNK's hardware. This is the game that placed last in the poll, but I think that says more about the quality of the other three games rather than this game's lack there-of.

Pop 'N Bounce

i43.photobucket.com/albums/e388/reelmojo/NG4LGOTW/pnb.png

Genre: Breakout
Players: 2
Size: 58 Megs
Released on: MVS

Brief Description:

Video System's 1997 take on the "Breakout" genre (for lack of a better term) is unique if only for it's two player mode. It also includes somewhat recognizable characters (such as Rabio and Lepus from Rabbit Punch) and gameplay mechanics that give it a much more puzzle game oriented feel than most Breakout style games.

This is actually a good but not an easy Arkanoid clone on our favorite Arcade system. Pop n' Bounce is one of these niche Neo Geo titles that are easily overseen and remain undiscovered but actually are pretty fun. I haven't tried the 2 Player mode yet, and that one could be even better than the already solid Singleplayer mode. But I'm still between studying or playing Last Hope and KoFXIII, so time is short...

Actually I've never heard of 'Rabbit Punch' (mentioned in description), is it any good?

Haven't put a huge amount of time into this one but I'd say Gapporin/Pop 'N Bounce is a pretty good Breakout game. Graphics are nice and colourful and it's quite fun to play. It's nice to have a 2 player option as well although I haven't had a chance to try that out yet. One problem I do have with this game though is the difficulty. It just seems tougher than the average Breakout game with the bat being very narrow and the ball(s) moving quite fast. It's very easy to lose the ball and it definitely gets a bit frustrating at times.

Anyone who likes Breakout games should give Gunbarich by Psikyo a try if they haven't already. Brilliant game and could very well be the best Breakout style game ever.

Pop 'N Bounce was never exactly poised to set the world on fire, but I definitely would have put some quarters in it back in the day. The whole "ATTACK" feature is a pretty great way to avoid the dreaded last block syndrome, and is a pretty amazing sight if you can activate it while there's still a lot left on the board. Another unique feature is that the level layouts are semi-randomized. If you only play the first few boards and then restart you're more than likely going to still be playing boards you haven't seen before. It's a nice touch, considering the difficulty of the game.

Murikov, I have played Rabbit Punch, but I honestly don't remember how good it is. It's a horizontally scrolling shooter. It was a nice touch by Video System to try to make recognizable mascots, but it obviously didn't work out as well for them as it did for Taito.
