Before Aruze bought out SNK and tried to liquidate it's assets they were known as Universal and they released the highly influential classic Mr. Do!. Fourteen years after the original Universal decided to revamp their classic with modern graphics and new gameplay tweaks and ironically chose the arcade hardware that they would one day try to destroy.
Neo Mr. Do!
Genre: Maze Players: 2 Size: 50 Megs Released on: MVS
Brief Description:
Neo Mr. Do! took the classic, Dig Dug inspired original and added puzzle oriented bonus stages and, more importantly, a 2 player mode. Those who aren't fans of the original still need not apply, but those who can appreciate pre-8 bit era gameplay will find a lot to enjoy. Neo Mr. Do! is widely considered to be the best game in the series.
As far as I can tell there is no version of this game other than the MVS one which can lead to it being a little expensive. To me that makes sense though. I mean, I like the game and I can see myself putting some quarters into a machine to play it, but I definitely wouldn't spend AES prices to own it.
It does however show up on some multi carts, so I'm sure some of our members actually do have a copy of the game in their homes.
Neo Mr. Do is actually a pretty solid game and Visco made a good job developing this remake for the Neo Geo, but imo it isn't that entertaining in the long term. But as long such a game is better than Diggerman, I'm fine with it. It should be added that a clown as protagonist might be something new for a change, but doesn't really appeal to the masses (which includes me as well).
I think I need to give this one a proper go on the 2P mode, it might be more addicting than playing it alone.
Although I haven't played this nor its predecessors, yet, I would like to show you members that Game Freak president Satoshi Tajiri enjoyed Universal's Mr. Do! series. To prove it, see these videos. No subtitles, sorry, but you might want to request it to someone you know that knows Japanese and English very well. Neo Mr. Do! wasn't shown, because it didn't exist back then.

I liked the original early 80s version, it was a bit like Digdug to an extent. I have played the new version but cant remember if it was on my multicart or emulation. Its a fun colourful game that plays very much like the original but I doubt many NG owners have played it due to its obscurity.
I do recall seeing it on Ebay but it was very expensive so it must be very rare.
I recently bought the conversion of this game for my AES console because it's a kind of mix of dig dug, lady bug and pac-man. Sometimes i need a break of fighting games and i want something different. I like the graphics, gameplay, perfect control and the atmosphere of this game. You have to choose the way you want to play this game by concentrate on coins, letters for bonus stage, weapons, trap for enemies, making more points or go through faster. You must think fast to complete the game the way you want. If you're like me, a little bit retrogamer and want to have fun, you should try this game. Don't forget neo-geo is a luxury so...$$$$
