Ok, this is a hard one for me, cause i actually like every one of these that i have played, i havent played Andro Dunos, or IronClad though.
I love Pulstar, i reckon if it had a 2 player simulataneous mode it was flog Blazing Star for me, but also, even if it had an option to stop the checkpoint respawn it would also be a huge winner.
Im just not that hard core on these games, i love them, but it makes it very frustrating for me having to go back all the time, and Last Resort is the same.
Blazing Star got my pick, followed by Prehistoric Isle 2, then Last Resort, then Pulstar. |

RIGHT AS OF NOW...
the only side scroller for the Neo that I have actually properly played is Last Resort, and I thought it was most excellent.
I understand Blazing Star & Pulstar receive a lot of praise, but haven't played them enough to make a proper, genuine opinion.
So, right now, my vote goes to Last Resort

It was a game i bought back in 93 Ninja, and i wish i never sold it!! I do have an MVS cart of it, but i would rather an AES cart of it instead!! It is crazy expensive though these days, that alone isnt an issue, the fact i bought it new in 93 for LESS than a used one on ebay is now is a stumble for me to get over!!
The graphics in Pulstar and Blazing star are simply incredible, as is Prehistoric Isle 2, however it doesnt seem to stand out as much for me on that game, awesome as it is |

Voted for Pulstar. It's always been my favourite Neo Geo horizontal shooter although Blazing Star, Preshistoric Isle 2 and Last Hope are fantastic games too. Never really put much time into Last Resort but it seems to have quite a few admirers here at NGFL so I'll have to devote some more time to it.

Last Resort is one of those games that is very difficult to play on your own, and in some parts relies on paterns, but not so much as Pulstar does. |

My vote went to Pulstar. It's methodical, memorization based gameplay just totally clicks with me. In fact, it was my love of Pulstar that made me hesitant to even try bullet hell style shooters because I didn't think I'd like them so much. Of course, I was completely wrong as a lot of Cave's games rank among my favorites now.
Pulstar will always be one of my favorite shooters, Neo or otherwise. Can't say I've played every game on the list though. I find Iron Clad especially interesting if only because it was a Neo CD exclusive until the Virtual Console version came out.

I voted for Blazing Star, its amazing. The bosses are incredible on that game, and so much work has gone into the scoring system too.
Postives: Very dynamic and fast with modern elements (a little bullet-hell in places). The different ships with different weapons mean lots of different ways to play the game. Amazing Graphics and excellent music. Funny Japanese-English 'The big one comes!' Watch Out Your Behind!' or whatever the hell it says lol.
Negatives : The constant BONUS! can be a bit annoying and there is a little slowdown. I also wanted one more level before you face the baby at the end! If you arent playing for score then a lot of the enemies can seem a bit light weight - you can just blast your way through most of the level without much thought.
Pulstar is also a really good game too but Blazing Star edges it for me since it's a lot more dynamic + modern feeling.

Mini-Reviews of films I have just watched : http://richwatmov...press.com/
"I remember getting a letter from a schoolgirl who had paralysis on one side of her body. Her mum had given her a copy of Oaarina of Time to keep her occupied in the hospital, and she was inspired by Link not to give up. She started to put more effort into rehab, and she regained the ability to walk again. I realised from that letter the power of games to move people, and the importance of never making a game halfheartedly."

Blazing Star. Absolutely incredible shooter, and probably the best video game intro ever! As for the final boss, seriously WTF?!!?
I find Pulstar and Last Resort to be awesome games, but there's a little too much R-Type going on for my liking. Due to this, Blazing Star takes the top spot as the best, most original Neo shooter.
From what I remember of Andro Dunos, it looks like a Megadrive game. Now that isn't a bad thing in itself, but the whole point of having a Neo Geo is that the games should be so much more than those on other 16Bit consoles. As for Zed Blade, I certainly remember being quite underwhelmed. Sure, some of the SFX may be more than a standard MD cart could pull off, but the game itself really didn't stand out to me.
Prehistoric Isle 2 is also quite cool. Never had a chance to play Ironclad, but now it's available in cart form I'd like to get my hands on it.

Well Ninja Commando is a cross between Run 'N Run and Shooter, to me. I mean It's basically like Shock Troopers, but with Ninjas.
Even if you could consider it a shooter, it vertical, not horizontal.

Yeah, but in Shock Troopers you can run around and fire in all 8 directions. In Ninja Commando you're basically limited to vertical shooting, making it much more like a vert shooter: Ninja = Spaceship.
Anyway, that was meant for the other thread on shooters. But I had a bit of brain confusion along the way. It all went a bit wrong and I ended up with that bit in this reply. Sorry. I blame this funny smelling tobacco that I've been smoking.....

Ninja Commando and Shock Troopers are not the shooters in question here. I wouldnt call those 2 games shooters, they are platformers to me. |

I DON'T HAVE A GAMING DICTIONARY...
to hand I'm afraid, but I'd say they are DEFINITELY more shoot em up based than platformers NeoGeoMan... especially Ninja Commando (Not Ninja Combat).
HOWEVER...
I'd definitely, and quite simply, plug for 'Run N Gun' shooters here > shmup or platformer

NO, THERE ISN'T...
but then, there aren't any space ships in Captain Tomaday either
Seriously, it's YOUR poll. I'm NOT questioning these 2 as inclusions, as both those games shouldn't be included (Shock Troopers series, even LESS so) anyway imo. It's just that they're definitely not platformers imo. That's all
Ninja Commando is the *only* title here that I think 'part' qualifies as a shmup. The mechanics are similar to a shmup (single directional fire whilst controlling the player) but it's the ability to control the scrolling of the screens speed, and the fact you use an actual person that JUST puts it in the Run N Gun category for me (like Shock Troopers or MERCS).
