I hope I haven't missed another topic on this somewhere....
What are your thoughts on the WiiU since the official announcement?
After thinking about it for a while, I sort of see where Nintendo are going. The DS was insanely popular so why not try to recreate a similar experience at home? I suppose a touch-screen controller really was the next logical step, and I'm looking forward to Sony releasing their own version, and then trying to justify it
I feel that the hardware itself was given the absolute minimum upgrade possible in order to handle a 1080p display, plus the Upad's 854x480 display, and still look good in comparison to the current PlayStation and Xbox. However, the Wii proved that graphics aren't everything, and Nintendo themselves have to hit a certain price point; that controller ain't cheap. So far it's only possible to connect a single Upad to the WiiU whilst everyone else uses Wiimotes. This is quite limiting for local multiplayer (tag looks like good fun though) but then most people will be sat at home online with their own Upad anyway.
Hopefully developers will create some awesome games that really take advantage of the new controller. Zelda needs to be so much more than just having a touch-screen item screen that's always displayed. I do have faith in Nintendo though, and I'm sure they'll do something incredible with Mario U.
So far I'm quite interested in Aliens: Colonial Marines. Lights off, Motion Sensor pulsing away on the Upad screen and the 5.1 system turned up loud....

there was a thread somewhere about the Wii U. i am a litle cynical about it at the moment im afraid. i think its a good idea but im worried it will lead to lots of casual-style party or training games, though i suppose all the main manufactures seem to be going that way anyway.....
I have heard that the rumours from E3 say that it's similiar power (maybe slightly better) to the PS3 but that it's a lot easier to make games for it.
i notice that Aliens game is coming out on 360 and PS3 so i assume the Wii U version will be the same but enhanced. its a nice idea but i dont think it will make the game hugely better. i am waiting to see what specific games get released on this system and whether traditional games players will see it as a genuine next-gen system or whether they will be waiting for PS4/Xbox 720 etc. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I'm both Cynical and impressed at the same time. The hardware looks really nice, and good potential for games but the controller... just looks plain uncomfortable. I might get it eventually, just not at launch. |

The WiiU controller looks clunky as hell, a huge contrast to the simple & easy to use Wii-mote. Please don't let there be any games that have you wave the goddamn controller around. Why is there even a screen on the controller in the first place? Supposedly, one of the uses for the screen is that you can still play a game while the TV is being used for something else. So basically, one of the concepts of the WiiU is that it can "used" even when it's off in favor of another console? What the hell? The WiiU is probably gonna have low priority over the TV while other systems, TV shows, & movies will surpass it.
The lineup probably won't be much better. It'll probably be Gamecube-ish at best in terms of quality & quantity. If Nintendo is putting a bigger focus on the hardcore, then how come they aren't localizing more games? Last, but not least, New Super Mario Bros. Mii? The hell? What place does a Mii have in a 2D Mario game?

HEY SD!...
Hey, I'm sorry to come off as a bit of a lazy ass, however, I've already done my fair share of WiiU discussion in a previous thread (not a dedicated WiiU thread, but an E3 one).
I also tried to raise a discussion on the console in the aforementioned thread.
My thoughts and feelings on the WiiU can be found there/here: http://www.neogeo...post_50029
OVERALL...
my feelings pretty much mirror yours: positivity. I pretty much agree with what you've said in your opening post - point for point.
The rest can be found in the thread I linked you too above.
Let me know (here) what you thought about the points I raised/discussed

wow spot on Mark , that's exactly what Nintendo said. they want a system you can use anytime even when someone else is using the TV. so it's always on in effect. The screen does have other uses - like as a window onto the gameworld. They mentioned the problems of fatigue with holding the screen up (even though it's quite light) so they said they have designed games where you dont have to hold it up for too long at a time. One thing that is good is that you can play all Wii games on it so im sure a lot of people will just upgrade.
my problem is that the Wii never really appealed to me that much in the first place, and now Microsoft has Kinnect and Sony has Move (i think its called that) - well i dont really care about those either. I understand they are selling big time to families so you can imagine the sort of games being made - fitness, dancing to Britney Spears etc. I have a 360 and i think that new Rez (Child of Eden?) game looks good on Kinnect but i wouldnt buy it just for a couple of games. On the Dreamcast i had Samba de Amigo with the maracas which was awesome but thank god i didnt have to use them to play Soul Calibur or Crazy Taxi.

I am using an iPad a lot now, and right off the bat, the controller just seems like a blatant rip off (but with physical buttons) of it. I'm not really impressed since there's a little add-on for the iPad called the iControlpad now. This thing came out last year! It's not like Nintendo hasn't taken design cues from Apple before. This is not revolutionary at all; Sega trailblazed the idea of controllers with screens, and stand alone mini-games on the screen. This is just the same idea rebranded and repackaged. Although, the actual on-screen games, I'm sure, pack much, much more processing power. As for the generously sized screen, it's about f*cking time! The market milked the itty bitty handheld screen industry for all its worth for over twenty years ('89 Gameboy). Leave it to a computer company to make generously sized screens on handhelds popular to consumers.. Hopefully, the itty bitty screens of my youth die in the next gen. The controller seems like the way handhelds will go. I'm 85% sure I'll pass on this though.

I will buy it, just in case if a game worth buying comes out. I will also use it to enjoy watching videos in bed instead of using a laptop.
But SSB4 better be better than its predecessors this time. |

YOU'RE NOT...
trying to 'bait' a Melee vs Brawl discussion here are you? I 'imagine' ReelMojo will be the only one to oblige you on this as I doubt anyone else here bothers with it (SSB in general). I could be wrong though?
I haven't played Brawl yet (I actually have a sealed copy kicking around!) and that is probably because Melee was such a bowl of old toss that I can't bear to go through it again. Still, I DID buy Brawl in the hope that it would succeed its previous 'efforts'. I always hear mixed things...

i do think the Wii U is a lot like the Pac Man game and Zelda game they had with the GBA+Gamecube setup, its like Nintendo have devloped that idea further.
This is a few steps on from Sega because the screen is a window onto the world in some games - e.g. you can turn it away from the TV to look left. i got the impression the whole reasoning behind the Sega VMU was to make some kind of Pokemon rival - you could join together VMUs to swap virtual pets etc. Although they never really made a big game based on that idea.
Sega's VMU screen was mainly just mini games and HUD details (whilst in the controller), although its true you could play Virtua Tennis just by looking at your VMU screen......

Wow this is pretty awesome, its pretty much a sure thing from the sounds of it.
If Valve & Take Two support WiiU, Exciting! & Moreover, valve and nintendo on the same format has long been a dream of mine

I only owned a Wii for a short time and did not really enjoy it to be honest. I have no interest in the new Wii unless it proves itself to be pretty amazing which I doubt but it would be nice to be proved wrong. The Move & Kinnect are of no interest to me either and I really hope the next Sony/Microsoft consoles are not based around this ailing technology. |
