The Atari 2600 Thread

Maybe I'm showing my age...

My first video game experience took place far before I can remember. I was basically one of those kids who can say he was born with a joystick in his hands. My parents had an Atari 2600 and I loved it to death. We didn't have too many games though, so whenever we went to my Grandma's house I hooked up the system they still had from when my dad was a kid and played some different games there. They had the good fortune of inheriting collections from a few neighbors so they had a lot of good stuff. When I got older my Grandma wanted to get rid of her games so she gave the whole lot to me!

Fast forward quite a few years... my girlfriend and I just got a house so I'm finally going to have the game room I've always wanted. My Atari hasn't been hooked up in ages and I'm actually pretty excited about setting it up and playing some old school games with her and her daughter. It occurred to me that most old school discussion around here doesn't get any older than the NES and SMS generation, so I wanted to see if you guys have any fond memories of games older than you are the way I do!

Just a few games that I absolutely love for the 2600:

Circus Atari
Imagine playing Breakout in real life. Dangerous, huh? Okay, now imagine someone turned that into a video game. Circus Atari is great solo or with two players, and you have to love that painful looking animation when you let one of your guys hit the ground.

Yar's Revenge
Probably my favorite game on the system, at least it was when I was a kid. That colorful explosion when you destroy the enemy ship is so satisfying! Especially on the harder levels later in the game.

Adventure
As a little kid this game was just awe inspiring to me. Obviously a huge inspiration for the Zelda series, you can't deny it's simplistic design and rock solid game play. I'd love to see someone remake the game in Flash and add a level editor, because the game's length is the only drawback.

YOU'RE GETTING ON...
now 'Mojo, although your still a tad younger than I! Smile

Indeed, I can share your sentiment for the old 2600! This was my FIRST EVER games console and it came with, what I consider to be a pretty kick ass selection of games.

I remember distinctly having: Centipede, Moon Patrol, Pole Position, Combat (oh yes!), Radar Lock, Solaris, Dark Chambers (epic!), The Empire Strikes Back, Midnight Magic, Defender 2, Galaxian, Dig Dug, Ms Pacman & Pacman JR... and probably more!

I ENJOYED IT...
back then as a small child. I got it when I was around 5 yrs old and played it quite a lot. It was disposed of many many years ago, and, as much as I enjoyed it then, it's not a console I plan to 'seriously' revisit.
