Back, ain't I
This will probably come as little shock to NGFL vets but over the last couple of years I have been battling with an alcohol problem. Not dependence as such, but a problem with binge drinking. And when I say drinking I mean drinking, a bottle of JD on my own in one evening is nothing out of the ordinary.

Finally, after years of broken relationships, lost jobs, lost friendships, and a whole bunch of denial it brought me to my knees and I admitted to myself and my family that I have a problem, and that I can't control it. It's a horrible, embarrassing thing to have to do.

Today, I am 8 days sober and feeling better about a lot of things. My hands shake a little and I know my body wants a drink but I don't want to do it anymore, and I won't.

I'm writing all of this bollocks because NGFL has put up with me being an asshole for a long time, and so I figured you guys deserved a little honesty.
Hi Shiny

Admitting that one have a problem (being whatever) is a big step in the right direction. I havenīt noticed any of this asshole-ism (?) from your side. I hope that you manage to stay sober, if you ever need someone to write to donīt hessitate to send me a line or two...

Well done mateyThumbs Up

Aw, Shiny, I'm really sorry to hear that.. I know it must be tough to fight an addiction like that. Its good to hear you're getting better! You can take your mind off things by getting an extra hobby or two. Right now, what you need is support, so if that's the case, we're all here if you ever need to talk about things, or share your thoughts. :3

Keep me updated on your health as well!
Without love, the truth cannot be seen.
good for you keep it up i dont even drink well i drink but just one beer in several months and that is nothing i for example have been drinking a lot didnt had a problem but i ddint liked my self when i am drunk so i quited now i just drink one or two beers on every 2-4 months
Hi Shiny. Despite your problem it's good to hear that things are starting to improve for you now. Good luck. Hope to see you in chat on Sundays sometimes if you've got time. I hope we can meet up one of these days too. You're always welcome here in Lincoln. We still need to have that two player game of Mutation Nation!
Shiny, I know what it's like to have an alcohol problem myself. In fact it almost destroyed my life, no joke. Everybody comes to a point when they realize what they've lost and they plunge head-on into a life of sobriety. I truly wish you the best of luck, and I'm sure that I'm not alone in the NGFL family when I say that I will readily provide as much encouragement as possible.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support and kind words. I don't want to dwell too much on it, but I wanted to be honest with y'all.

2D, I didn't know that. Are you okay now? I did consider cutting down but that's a cop-out, I'm going teetotal.

merlin, that 2UP Mutation Nation session has been a long time coming. Most underrated scrolling beat 'em up on the Neo.

Yeah I had a problem with binge drinking as well. Eventually I had to just quit all together, I made that decision two years ago. Now, I have absolutely quit drinking liquor ( which was my major problem ) and once in a very long while I have a beer when eating pizza. I don't drink socially at all anymore, and I've never really been that big a fan of beer, hence I only drink it with meal (as to avoid the possibility of getting even buzzed). I'm a happier person now and have a lot better control of my life. But I agree with you, it's best to go all out cold turkey in the beginning, at least that worked for me.

It's tragic to hear from your alcohol problems Shiny (and 2D), unfortunately that's a ever growing problem in our society. I'm still disappointed of seeing all these 12 - 16 years old brats boozed up and rioting at weekends...

But on the other hand I'm glad you made a drastic step and decided to change your way of life. And I also agree with the others that an extra hobby or professional help could definitely be a further solution as well. Keep it up! Thumbs Up
Good to hear you're stopping the alcohol...I know someone who was addicted to cocaine and almost destroyed himself, just in time he saw that his life was a lot better not being addicted. It's really stupid to destroy your life over something like an addiction. Good luck with the difficult road'll make it if you really want to.
My arcade stuff

"ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn! Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!"
what can I say that hasn't already been said?

The most important thing is that you (appear to?) have consciously decided to make the change off your own back. THAT is a huge step forward in itself - going beyond denial (i.e. it's all them other d*ckheads, not me!) Grin

I also wish you all the best with the journey ahead. I can't really give any advice on the best COA but I think 2D is on the money - surely it HAS to be Cold Turkey all the way? I don't think cutting down really works by comparison. 2D's the man in the know to be honest. I remember having a chat with him about this months ago. He also gave similar likenesses to your 'JD in a night' comment.

I don't have any vices myself... apart from Coca-Cola! It's not alcohol, but given enough time, it too will surely f*ck you (me!) up!!

Seriously though Shiny; all the best mate. You know where we are if you need us...

First of all Shiny you have never to my knowledge been an arse on this site, on the contrary I have always found you to be one of the sites more colourful and hardcore members. you have a bit of a an edge to your personality which I have always liked.

With regards to your problems I know 100% where you are coming from, binge drinking is something that has crept into my life the last few years, very ironic considering I spent early to mid last decade battling a very serious amphetamine ( E & Coke as and when) addiction which landed me in A&E on one occasion.

Yet despite my past problems I actually consider booze to be the worst of the lot, never knowing who you have to apologize to the next day after a major sesh is no joke even when drinking alone in the house ( which until recently I was doing a lot). My last major sesh was last month when rather than just enjoying a few nice vodka n cokes I stupidly done the whole bottle and spent the next day in bed and projectile vomiting in the toilet. A waste of a day damage to my health and a major bollocking off my girlfriend. I should have been doing this at 18 not bloody 36, I promised myself and my GF that I would not do it again. Daft thing is my life is happy , I have a wonderful GF , nearly paid off my mortgage , in a less stressful job , have a good group of friends and family so I have no excuse for my actions as I am not depressed but I still did it WHY. Although I am not addicted to alcohol I find it difficult to stop once I start so maybe I do have some form of addiction but when I think about it I don't actually enjoy being drunk ( unlike being high) so surely their is no reason to drink at all.

Sorry for babbling Shiny its a brave step to admit to this problem but as you can see from the above posts you have the support of us here, Ninjas right try and get in the chat on Sunday if you wanna discuss things further especially as 2D is often in as he has beat a similar problem.

Creative and intelligent people ( which I know you are Shiny) seem to be drawn to and develop drug/alcohol problems as much as if not more so than society's down and outs, its nothing to be ashamed of but its something you gotta beat as its only heading one way Shiny and you can work out that answer yourself. Keep posting Shiny keep us updated and keep off the booze you have our support.
I'm humbled. And not sure what to say, except thank you.

I think you guys are right, and going teetotal is the only way forward. I'm not saying that I will never ever have another drink but I am committed to knocking this on the head, and right now that means no alcohol at all. Not until I'm confident that I can have one and walk away which at the moment I am not.

Don't apologise for babbling, STE. It's good to know that I'm not alone. Yourself and 2D have shown me that it's not unusual and that it can be beat. It's funny you mentioned intelligence. A friend and I used to talk about what we called "the curse of intelligence", thinking about everything too much and trying to kill it with intoxication.

You're right, Murikov, it is an increasingly worrying problem. Especially as larger numbers of youngsters seem to be drinking heavily at ever younger ages. A lot of the problem is that alcohol is too easy to get hold of, and it's almost completely normal for people to be shit-faced in public on a weekend.

A wise man once said, "Alcohol isn't the best drug but it's the easiest to get and we're a fat lazy country of convenience. If I had to wait in a parking lot at 3 in the morning, waiting for my friend to answer his voicemail, just to pick up a six-pack I'd never drink again."
Welcome back! It's good to hear that you're ditching alcohol. Most people don't have the guts to admit it when they have a problem with it, much less actually fight their addiction. Hats off to you, sir! Thumbs Up
Sorry to hear you had a bad problem Shiny:( i never noticed you being an arse either. i have suffered with addiction myself (though not to alcohol), and it was an utter nightmare. i dont drink anymore (because of an allergy) , except for a single drink about every 6 months - but i can honestly say once you get used to going out and socialising without drink its a lot better. because if you can have a good time when you are not drinking, its somehow a more valid experience. thats not to say i dont miss alcohol because i do, i would love to get drunk the odd night or at least a bit merry. well done for recognising you had a problem and for doing something about it. Thumbs Up

thats tough to hear about your problems Ste and 2d too. Comfort

Best of luck to you, It takes balls to admit it and I think you are on the right path Wink
