What are you playing ?

Mojo wrote :- Months ago I bought P.N.03 for a whopping $2.99, set it on my GameCube shelf and forgot about it. Last night I put it in for the first time and found it oddly compelling. I couldn't shake the feeling that it was extremely simplistic, perhaps too much so. But at the same time I couldn't stop playing!

I've heard that PN03 was good. Capcom released a pretty amazing line up of gamecube exclusives. I quite like it when they put old style gameplay into modern games, i really like that 'immediate' feel you get.

I've put my SSFIV playing on hold whilst i have been playing Gunlord (dont have time for both games) but i am also playing Super Mario 3D land on 3DS and i just got Kid Icarus : Uprising - which comes with this nifty stand, (ably presented by B.Jennet and Marco)

i468.photobucket.com/albums/rr45/RimShot69/SNV88549b.jpg

(you use the analogue slider to move and the stylus to aim, and a shoulder button to fire so the stand is quite useful, although i did seem to be able to play it fine without the stand) Kid Icarus seems like a good game from a brief playthrough, with some intersting layers of depth, so looking forward to giving it some more time. I found there was too much talking for me in the opening chapter but hopefully it will tone down after they run out of things to tell me Smile

Currently playing Super Mario Galaxy on Wii. Been a Nintendo fan since I was brought a NES for Christmas when I was 7/8. However, I've disliked all this motion control thing since, well, since the Wii came out really.
Finally forced myself to play Galaxy because it's the only core Mario game I've never played (excluding SMG2), and after starting off OK, as the game gets harder and more precise, I'm losing interest more and more. It just feels so wooly and imprecise compared to all the rest. I keep having to change position to make sue my Wiimote is pointed RIGHT AT THE SCREEN. It's not comfortable.
BTW, the Wii I'm playing it on isn't mine, I've never brought one, which is the only time that's ever happened with a Nintendo console and me (and I own a Virtual Boy too!)
I think it would be better than Sunshine if it wasn't for the control scheme.

So, after all this time, if Mario can't convince me to enjoy the Wii I don't think anything can. I just hope with the WiiU the emphasis is on the touch screen and not constantly shifting your position and dancing about the bloody room.

Anyone else really dislike all this motion control gubbins or is it just me?

I USED TO, FROM AFAR...
then I bought a Wii, not for motion control gaming, but to play the exclusive Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Of course, now owning a Wii 'for one game' I thought I may as well give some traditional Wii games a go. And, I'm very glad I gave it the chance.

I too despised the idea of using motion controls to play games, BUT if you buy the right titles, it is immense fun. I still struggle to play the more advanced FPS' of the PS3 & 360's ilk, because once you adjust to motion controls (for Black Ops & GoldenEye etc) pad controls for FPS suddenly feel really antiquated and unnatural, by comparison.

There's great fun and some awesome gaming experiences to be had from the Wii, but admittedly, it's not for everyone...

Waggle for waggle's sake is a horrible thing. It's the same thing with early DS games that shoved touch screen controls down our throats. Ever play Bust a Move DS? However, when done correctly both motion and touch screen controls can be a great thing.

Been playing Persona 3: FES (which just came out on PSN) since I wanted to know what all the fuss was about as well as get a little info on some of the characters in the upcoming Persona 4 Arena. I'm a bit under 2 hours in and it's been really slow so far, but pretty cool at the same time. The characters are well defined and instantly memorable and the combat seems like it's going to be pretty fun. As an RPG player who comes from more of a Final Fantasy / Dragon Quest background it's a very different experience from what I'm used to. I definitely like it so far though.

Also just got Skullgirls. I'm really loving Valentine so far, and I can probably use Filia decently too considering she's the closest thing this game has to a shoto. I haven't had time to try out any other characters yet though. I was going to dive into Story Mode this morning but Valentine's story needs to be unlocked so I just did arcade mode. At first I was getting my ass handed to me on normal difficulty but I slowly got better and ended up finishing it just before I had to go to work. The ending boss is epically hard, and they definitely took some design cues from SNK bosses for her. I wouldn't say she's as unfair as Magaki, although she does throw a ton of projectiles at a time just like him. Overall I'm really liking what I see so far. Oh, and the soundtrack might be one of the best for any fighting game ever made. I'm a big Michiru Yamane fan though, so I might be biased.

Today I am really putting my nose to the grind with Ganbare Neo-poke Kun. I managed to get him to go to work eleven times within the span of an hour (very high output rate). I guess the planets were all aligned this morning because he seemed anxious to construct games. I am on the fifth page of mini-games now won't be too long until I got them all (six pages total). Let just say it's been a long time coming, since I've had all sorts of delays and setbacks for the past five years I've been trying to complete this game.

Since I got my MAS stick for my Dreamcast, I've been also playing VF3tb regularly man, I love that game.

Aside from these two games, various N-G, DC and Genesis action games Contra Hard Corps. is very addicting when it's done co-op. Smile

I've been wondering what Skull Girls is like as I'm waiting for it to hit PSN. It seems to be getting mixed reviews regarding the difficulty and the lack of moves though?

So this is totally playable without requiring any real Japanese language skills? It certainly sounds very interesting.

Skullgirls doesn't even remotely have a lack of moves. It does lack an in game move list however, so maybe that's what you were thinking of. You can get the official move list from their website, but I've just been using Shoryuken's wiki so far. And yes it's hard, but it's completely fair. I just beat story mode with Painwheel and the final boss took me a long ass time, but it was extremely fun the entire time. I've not taken the game online yet, but I'm sure I'll get my ass handed to me since I've never been great at any Marvel Vs. game

I would consider it totally playable. The mini-games I've tried so far are extremely simple and need no instructions (although in SNK fashion, instructions are provided in Japanese). The "virtual pet" aspect involves no text, except the pause screen, which asks you if you want to save your game (first option yes, second no).

Oddly, the actual instruction manual (that comes with the cartridge) looks quite comprehensive and deep, language-wise. I've been thinking about having a Japanese gaming buddy look at the manual and make heads from tales for me.

IN WHAT CONTEXT...
does SkullGirls pertain to MvC? Having never played SkullGirls (or bothered reading about it!) I don't really understand the comparison Smile

It's highly inspired by the MVC series in terms of general gameplay systems. There's tagging, assists, crazy air combos, OTGs, push blocking, etc... It evolves the formula in a few ways though. You can make a team of any size, 1 to 3 characters. Solo characters get a damage and health boost, two characters have less health and damage but obviously have the added ability to use assists and tag out to regain red health, and teams of three even less health and damage but double the assist and tag options. Also, you can use any move or action as your character's assists so creating a team and picking what assists work best for you can be a pretty complex process. There's also infinite and unblockable protection systems and combos overall seem easier to do than MVC2 since the gameplay speed is a bit slower and more controllable. I know you love MVC so I'd recommend at least picking up the demo when it arrives on the European PSN in a few weeks. The demo allows you to play as Filia and Cerebella who are definitely two of the most popular characters from what I've read about online play so far. Filia is the closest thing the game has to a shoto, and Cerebella is the resident grappler.

THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP MOJO...
The system does sound interesting. If, as a DLC title, it doesn't cost too much (i.e. 9.99 is my ceiling on non-physical media) I may take a look.

The tag system sounds like a mish-mash of MVC2 meets CVS2's ratio system (also in KOF 01). I like the sound of not being forced to having to learn 2 - 3 characters off the cuff. It would be cool to master one, then learn another in the background... etc etc. Like I (imagine we all?) do with the likes of KOF - learn a solid team of 3 and then expand in the background. After all, expansion is where the fun is Wink

AS FOR MY LOVE OF MVC...
if you read back, you'll see that I no longer love Capcoms vs titles, but I'll give you this on a technicality, I do love XMvsSF, MSHvsSF and MVC1. I despise MVC2 though and didn't bother with the ridiculously OTT MVC3, although I will admit, Capcom DEFINITELY surprised me with a fairly fresh roster. I reckon I'll pick up UMVC3 on the cheap somewhere down the line. Same with whatever the fuck the latest BlazBlue iteration is (Consumer Shaft III, or whatever?).

I was interested in Skullgirls - but i was a bit put off by the overall concept - a fighter with just girls seems a bit limiting in the long run, and also the whole panty-flashing thing. (we get the point - you can see her panties jesus! i'm not 12 anymore!) I like the character with all the minions though, i think she looked cool. I want to try it though, also its Western and looks half-decent!

I just played SSFIV for the first time for a while and was totally crap at it! My stick skills werent very fluent, and i was messing up some of my moves when before they were just instinctive. Proof if you don't use it - you lose it.

Not playing anything else at the moment because i am having a massive sort-out of my video game collection. I want to trim the fat and just keep games i will play. As far as i know i am keeping all my Neo Geo games...

Personally besides KOF 13 it's the best new fighter you'll find out there. The move set has everything you need to claim victory and more really. You'll find that quite a few tributes to other characters are made and gives the game that much more charm. Also there will be future DLC where a couple male characters will be available as well. I was actually fine with an all female cast I think it was long overdue to be honest. The announcer's banter is just something of wonder he will say random things from other fighters either in a hilarious inflection or a weird spin on the words (the guerrilla fate is yearning...anyone who has played blazblue should find that amusing) Now Maria the final boss or Skullgirl if you will. Remember how frustrating Omega Rugal,Gonitz, or Geese can be well I suppose Maria is the games tribute to SNK boss syndrome. She has three levels she will cycle through with the more life she looses of course each one being harder than the one before it. So prepare for a challenge. For 15 bucks it would be mad to not try it if you could afford to. I really look for this game to grow even more in the future.

I think the problem with the all-female cast is just that its the Melty Blood thing - all the characters are kind of the same size, have similar voices and you get can a bit sick of all the sugar after a while..

Having said that - obviously this is Skullgirls, so thats the theme. This was the lady (Parasol) i liked. I like it when No.13 takes the hit for her lol. Looks quite combo-happy with a good sense of humour, great animation and gfx too.

EDIT : just found and have been playing this game on XBLIG (Indie games). i think it will be really good for a quick 20 minutes blasting every now and again. Costs virtually nothing, think it was 80 MS pts. It's called Score Rush. The only bad thing is i dont think it has online scoreboards (it has offline) but you can have up to 4 players though it's pretty good with one.

I LIKE THE LOOK OF THAT RIKO...
shame it's probably XBL only :(

Appears to share the same fire/hold/turn mechanic from Zero Gunner 2! Looks cool... only thing I dislike is the 'awesome' soundtrack Roll Eyes Thumbs Down

It's totally out of place on a classy classic piece like this...

@Ninja yes its a good game but not one you can play for long periods. there seem to be quite a few good indie games but they make you search for them. I try to look at other people's 'top indie games' lists. I think PSN will prob have something similar though...

This is good and bad. For my 3DS: I have bought and downloaded original gameboy Tetris and Super Mario Land and also Super Mario Bros ( NES version). Its bad because i already own Tetris and Mario Land and Nintendo is making me buy them again. grrrr. but what's good is i can save the 'game state' at anytime, so finally the best version of Tetris and high scores are now saved. Also i can play Mario Land or Super Mario Bros and stop and at any time and continue again when i want! This really make me happy and i am enjoying playing my 3DS out in the sun Smile

Well, I just discovered Peggle, and I am trying out the iPad version. It is not as fun or addicting as all the hype seemed to promise. The only way I found out about it was by accidentally finding a BAFTA '12 article (saying it won the best handheld game category in the U.K.). I'm having much more fun playing an indie APP called Dungeon Scroll; it is a Jumble/RPG game. It's truly the first of its kind. Although dungeon crawling is done rail style, monster encounters are settled by creating words to cause damage to the monster's HP. More complex words cause more damage. The player's HP is damaged by time (some monsters, like bosses, cause time to move faster). Certain powerups won from monsters can help the player gain brief advantages (like the one that auto-finds the best damaging word for me!). There is a form of leveling up. Maybe I'm just having fun with it because I'm a nerd for this kind of stuff, but it's worth a go for anyone looking for something different or fans of RPG hybrids.

Finally got around to playing the Bulletstorm demo i downloaded about 6 months ago on 360. I thought it was going to be really good but i was a little disappointed. It's well made and executed but i didnt get on that well with the central mechanic - killing with style.

Its all been made nice and easy for you to launch people into the air, and then once in the air they fly about in slow motion ready for you to unleash some kind of kill combo on them. but it didnt feel that satisfying to me.

i prefered it in Psi-ops the way you could kill people in that, by lifting them up and throwing them into things. Maybe even lift a locker door off and knock someone out with it! It felt a little less-prescribed and part of the game world rather than a specific mechanic they have implemeted.

I saw Bulletstorm for a tenner in HMV a couple of days ago and passed the oppurtunity by. Not a bad game in my opinion - just not for me.

I can't decide what to play. Since I'm back in Texas for a little while I've decided to pull out some of my old handheld games (since that's really all I have room to bring back to Atlanta with me). So I've pulled out my NGPC with all the games and my GBA with Pokemon Fire, FF 1&2, FFIV. That's on top of the 3DS that I brought with me here wich I've been focusing on RE:Revelations.
So I'm not sure what I want to play. I started FF6 but I've quickly put it aside to play NGPC. I guess I'll most likely default to BiomotorUnitron.

Been playing Diablo III but am starting to lose steam, my Monk is 53 and I'm still not in inferno difficulty. None of the other classes appeal to me at all, I don't think Diablo III will keep my attention for the years that Diablo II did:(

Started playing DayZ, a zombie survival mod for Arma II. This is crazy, finally a proper zombie game that 'gets it', and not a shooting gallery game like Left for Dead. The only thing thats starting to ruin it is that the mod is gaining popularity, and you used to have to assess if a player would be hostile when you encounter them, now mostly people just seek out people to kill. I hope they provide a open Dedicated server download, that way me and a few friends could adventure without all the COD kiddiez.

Finished Uncharted Golden Abyss on VITA in a day and returned it for a refund. This was the first uncharted game I could stand to finish(tried 1/2/3 on PS3) but still wasn't anything special, I just don't get the hype surrounding the series.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the least...
