Wii Virtual Console Emulation quality?
GeeseTheDuck
Being tired of the SNK less-ity that is Playstation Network,
i just got myself one of those fancy Wiis.
I can already see that the Classic Controller won't be the best thing to use in the world,
but I'll manage. My question is just how in/accurate the emulation is.

all of the neogeo emulation is 100% identical to the original aes version no matter if you have the old x box kawax emu. or pc mame emu. also the wii virtual console deliver the same quality but you have to buy each game on its point values like samurai spirit 2 alone will cost you 750 point onlyRoll Eyes

GeeseTheDuck
I'll manage as long as i know the games work as they should.
I should try using the gamecube controller just for shits and giggles.

The Neo Geo emulation on the Wii Virtual Console seems to be very accurate, better than the emulation on collections like SS Anthology. Although the button setup isn't the best.

I should warn you since you are from Europe, that all Neo-Geo games run in 50Hz with borders and 17.5% slower gameplay. Even imports like Ironclad are effected.

That's a bit lame,
but i guess it hardly matters.
Hmm... should i get KOF '95 or Samsho II first... decisions, decisions.

samurai spirits 2 without any hesitate. as for kof 95 its in excellent fighting game but not near ss2Thumbs Up

From what I have seen all the Wii conversions seems accurate enough and worth the money if you don't already own a AES/MVS version of the game. Btw. nice to see a fellow Norwegian on the siteSmile

Right back at ya'
Anyhoo, after going for a "I'll take both, thank you" and spending some time with both KOF '95 and Samsho II, i can say that the emulation seems spot on to me. And to my surprise, the GC controller isn't half bad with these games either. The Dualshock was pretty much unbearable to use for fighters, but i think I'll just get used to this one rather than buy some fancy arcade stick.

Now, i hope SNK.P will keep this up so we can see a KOF 2000 release before the Wii get the shaft. I already own the ps2 version, but there's something about arcade accurate versions without any fancy arranged soundtracks and whatnot.

When Samsho IV, MSlug X (which shouldn't be too far off now, with III and 2 out)
and KOF 2000 (which seems sooo far off) gets released the Wii can die off, knowing that it'll get hours and hours of my time for many years to come.
Garou would be nice though.

Whenever i enter the Wii store, i feel like a kid in a candy store,
this is such a big change from the PSN Store's SNK-lessity.

as for the control problem i don't know why master snk didn't release the original neogeo joystick on all formation gamecube-ps3-xbox-xbox360- because all the control for the system i mention above is not made for fighting game.they just release it 1 time for the ps2 and does continued.its the major problem for snk new comer'sAnnoyed

marktheshark
To be honest, I don't think the Neo Geo emulation is too bad, however, you might have to wait until the next Nintendo system comes out as some later NG games are too big for the file size limit on the Wii Shop (340 mb I think)

Yep, they are both out in PAL land now.

North America got Magical Drop II since Monday.

I might grab Magical Drop II when I buy another Wii Points card. I will also consider getting Karnov's Revenge when it is released in NA (don't want the 50Hz version)

About 50Hz and 60Hz?

There is a big difference between the two.

50Hz (PAL) games run 17.5% slower than the 60Hz(NTSC) versions.

With NEO GEO 50Hz games on the VC, they are actually quite terrible. Because they run slower, it is almost equivalent of fighting underwater. Then there are also borders on top and bottom of the screen squashing the screen.

The NES,Sega MS, and the Mega Drive, are also poor conversions, because some the the games also have the addition of slower music.

I recommend you watch this to see the difference between 50Hz and 60Hz.

For the Virtual Console there isn't a way to play the 60Hz versions on the Wii, thanks to Nintendo's 50Hz only policy.

The best way would be to import an American Wii. There are no 50Hz problems and Wii Points for buying VC games online is also cheaper I might add.

but isn't that going to be more expensive?

The retail games can be expensive (sometimes) yeah, but getting the console itself is cheaper if you know where to look on Ebay. As I said before downloading games off the Wii shop is actually cheaper than the PAL Wii shop.

PS sorry for the late reply.

I very much beg to differ, its NOT the same as an AES at all, or MVS or CD for that matter. Close as it may be, its NOT 100% identical. Ive compared a few side by side, and its not the looks im talking about, its the control timing, which on ALL emulators ive ever tried is only milli seconds out, but that can make all the difference in a fighting game where move timing is critical.

For the difference of 50 and 60Hz, i did a thread on this a while ago when i modded a friend's AES and put on a switch ( which he wanted, there isnt any need to have both modes... )

Have a look here for that comparison, and youll soon see why 60Hz is the pick for games on NEO-GEO... Unless ofcourse you want an easier ride through NAM 1975, cause being slower, its alot easier on 50Hz consoles!! Wink
