Any alternatives to youtube?
marktheshark
Hi, guys. I might sound a little crazy here, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna be on youtube much anymore. There's just way too many flaws with it like a really high amount of jerks, trolls, & hackers. Are there any good alternatives to Youtube? I'm thinking about Metacafe &/or maybe blip.TV, but any others?

It depends on what you use it for. For example, I use youtube to look up gaming vids for learning purposes. I have now switched over to UStream, which shows live as well as established vids of gameplay. Many live gamers will discuss game tactics while playing which is a huge help.

There's also Dailymotion and Veoh.

i think Youtube is the main one everyone uses, but they are tightening their copyright rules. i used Dailymotion for one of my vids which Youtube wouldnt allow. you could get widescreen on that. some of the other sides only allow standard size.

Best to just ignore the trolls Mark and stay on Youtube. Most people aren't like that it's only a minority of idiots so it's a pity if you let them spoil it for you. A lot of other video sites are seriously lacking in content and viewers when compared to Youtube. Dailymotion seems to be one of the more popular alternatives to Youtube and is also worth a look.

For gameplay videos I think it's also worth taking a look at Asian video sites like China's Youku and Tudou and Japan's Nico Nico Douga. There's a huge quantity of gameplay videos on those sites including some games which are not well represented on Youtube.

Vimeo is pretty awesome, if a bit arty.

Veoh.com is okay but its variety to find exactly what you're looking for is pretty short.

Megavideo has a limit to how much you can watch and you'll need to use a search engine, searching with Keywords Megavideo combined with the thing you're looking for.

Youku has various videos and not all are in Japanese but it takes a heck of a long time to load the videos.

Tudou has a much better loading time than Youku and is more reliable.

Jogyjogy takes some time to load. The big bother is that it never mentions if a video is removed or has an error.

www.220.ro has is in a foreign language but it contains various English language videos and has other stuff besides videos.

Vbox7.com has quite a long loading time but guarantees no errors.

video.google.com (Google Videos) is an okay site with easy navigation.

Hope these websites help you.Wink

I don't blame you for wanting to leave YouTube. They have to just change everything for no reason constantly, and I agree with you on there being too many jerks and trolls. That's why I had to remove most of the videos from my YouTube page.

YT is starting to get under my skin too. While I am undecided about deleting my vids (from YT) and moving them another site, I am exploring my options. Not to beat a dead horse, but all those potty mouthed kids ruining it for everyone else. I don't even get involved in the discussions, but just knowing their posts are there sickens me. If that isn't bad enough, I've noticed a disturbing trend: giving way to big corporations. It's becoming more about marketing sodas, gadgets and cars (etc., etc.) and less about the underground, grassroots users with genuine messages. It's insulting to my intelligence when they (YT) try to offer safe, pre-planned, "corporate approved" junk as sincere stuff from real users. That's all that seems to make the front page these days...

There are many alternatives,
but no 'true' alternative since YT is still the most used site.
People are getting annoyed at all the copyright jazz,
so I'd say you should just wait and see where it goes.

ISN'T THERE AN OPTION...
so you can disable comments in the text window? This may help with the note-book wielding 12 year olds? Or, is it simply mature discussion surrounding your videos that you are ACTUALLY after? If so, then I can only offer my sympathy!

AS FOR MARKETING...
I guess it was always going to end up this way somehow in the end, especially after Google shelled out a 'lot' of money for it a few years back. It's all about the investment recompense at the end of the day...

i think Merlin's right - the trolls and kids would come along with any popular video site. on a lot of the other sites you probably wont get as many views. its amazing what some people argue about on there. like you will watch a video by some random band and people will be arguing about lady gaga in the comments ?!?

i had some guy who kept insulting me on comments on one of my videos. i sent him a polite message asking him why and he was actually quite sheepish and removed them all. he was upset because one of the videos i had uploaded - youtube wouldnt allow him to upload. he was making comments about my mother, questioning my parentage - stuff like that lol
