Old School Revolution.
marktheshark
Not sure what you guys think, but I'm pretty sure there's a "retro revolution & revival" coming around:

For example:

Old: Super Mario Land 1 & 2 (Gameboy)
New: NSMB DS

Old: Nintendo's early NES Sports games
New: Wii Sports

Old: Combat (Atari 2600)
New: Tanks (in Wii play)

Old: Super Mario Kart (Super NES)
New: Mario Kart Wii

Old: Super Mario Bros. 1-4 (4 is SMB World)
New: NSMB Wii

Old: Donkey Kong Country
New: Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)

Old: NBA Jam
New: EA Sports NBA Jam 2010 (Wii. Maybe 360 & PS3)

Old: Goldeneye 007 (N64)
New: Goldeneye 007 Wii

Old: Kid Icarus (NES)
New: Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS)

Old: Sonic 1, 2, & 3
New: Sonic 4? (PSN, XBLA, & Wiiware)

These are just some examples. If anything, it looks like the Wii is the driving force of the retro revolution as a lot of good games have old school values which is why I like the Wii so much. The PS3 & 360 are disappointing since they don't have many games with old school values except for Sonic 4 & maybe Street Fighter IV.

I think its great, depending if the game is good in terms of quality and stuff. Much like Hollywood, Video Game Developers have basically run out of ideas so they decide to remake everything now. So its up to indie film (game developers too) to breathe new ideas into the industry.

i agree. there definitely is. a lot of it is because downloadable games make it possible financially for retro-style games to be sold at a low price and still make a profit. also companies have been relying on nostalgia to revive old franchises. and some old franchises like Mario Kart - never stopped. i do think gamers are becoming more open to old style gameplay though. which i am pleased about Smile

Well, I'm not sure if a lot of gamers are becoming more open-minded towards old school gameplay, but I do know that there's many people out there that like old school gameplay, however I'm not sure if downloadable distribution is a good idea as some of them may not know that the game even exists in the first place unless there's advertising for it.

A few things that developers might have to do while trying to revive old school gaming is to advertise their products as many old school gamers stopped gaming a long time ago as well as no DLC as it might put off some old-school gamers.
