Hello, and welcome to Game of the Week!
'
Viewpoint is an isometric shooter for the NeoGeo, and Sammy's only game on the system. One of the first true '3D' games on the AES (complete with polygons!), it can get rather difficult at times.

I myself have never played it, so let's hear what you guys have to say!

Viewpoint

Genre: Isometric Shoot 'em up
Players: 2
Size: 74 megs
Released on: AES, MVS, Neo CD, PSX, Sega Saturn, Sega Megadrive

Brief Description:

An isometric, futuristic shooter with pre-rendered "Polygonised" sprites. There are end-of-level guardians that include a giant metal crab, a fly and a totem-pole. he player must follow the diagonally scrolling screen, avoiding assorted enemies and mechanical contraptions to reach the end-level guardian which must be destroyed. The main weapon is a pulse laser which can be charged up for increased damage. Only a pair of drones can be collected as power-ups. Three types of bomb are available: a fire-wall, homing missiles and a nuclear bomb

Running Wild
What the fuck... SLINKIES!? I was surprised how short the boss fight was though.

Tight and imaginative shooter with one hell of an awesome soundtrack. However, it has two major flaws:

1:The boss battles are incredibly repetitive and go on for way too long. This is also a problem in Pulstar and Blazing Star, which are apparently made by the same guys.

2:The checkpoint are horribly placed, so you have to replay a five-minute section just because you died at the boss.

If you play the game on MVS or have the Uni-bios, it's possible to fix that 2nd point. If you go in the dip-switches, there's an an option for the 2-players mode. Normally, it's set on "Alternate" by default but you can switch to "simultaneous". Not only will it allow two players to play co-op at the same time, but it'll also remove the checkpoints in one-player mode so you respawn on the spot! The game is a lot more fun that way.

I'd say it's an excellent shooter. I love the graphical style and the music really appeals to me. It really is incredibly difficult though perhaps the toughest shooter on the system. I've never got past stage 3 before! Anyone here actually managed to complete this game before?

I had heard about the two player co-op option but I didn't realise there were no checkpoints in that mode. I'll need to try that one day. Sounds like it'd be pretty fun.

So yeah, this game is pretty damned difficult. The hardest thing for me to get over is the viewpoint (Pfft), seriously. I've played this game a bit and have trouble judging if I am in the line of fire of a bullet or not!

Wow, I tried the trick that Glowsquid pointed out... even in 1P mode if you switch to "simultaneous" you re-spawn at the exact place that you perish! Thanks Glowsquid! Wow this makes the game a lot easier. Is this considered cheating?

This game does have wonderful graphics and the music is a mixed bag for me. Some songs sound like 1970's shopping mall music Pfft ...others, weird electro-pop. Anybody notice that the boss music sounds almost identical to the boss music in Zupapa!?

I agree with Kaz's rating. This one's overall presentation is rather lackluster.

I recall when this first came out CV+G raved about it and I only got to play it recently on emu. Its rock hard alright and was probably very impressive in 92 and full credit to developers its original. A strange game to exist on the NG but a welcome one which I intend to pick up on NGCD at some point ( hopefully the music will be even better on it ) rather than MVS.

Murikov
I never had the possibility and time to make it through the first level while playing it on the emu, but overall I really like this game. The graphics, soundtrack and the gameplay are pretty decent so far, but we all are aware of it's difficulty.

On the other hand I don't think ppl would call Viewpoint extraordinary special if it would have been the same game with a classic vertical/horizontal viewpoint. And especially the viewpoint of Viewpoint (Smile) is the feature that highlights this game most imo.

By the way, has anyone of you ever played the PSX/Saturn version of Viewpoint? Graphically it quite looks refreshed, but is it as good as the NG / NGCD version?

oh wow i love Viewpoint, its a great game! nothing wrong with it at all in my opinion apart from when you die on a boss and have to go back. the isometric view makes it very refreshing, it has excellent graphics and great soundtrack, and plays very well once you get used to it. i wish there were more isometric and games in general.

when i saw this game for the first time back when it came out it made me realise that one day all games would be in 3D, seeing this made me realise that for some reason. before then it was hard for me to see how fast arcade games could work in 3D.

Really weird isometric shooter, kinda irritating and hard, but still has a catchy soundtrack.

Never actually played it myself but I heard that the slowdown is horrendous in the PS1 version. Supposedly it gets particularly bad during the Stage 3 boss battle. Personally I have to say that I dislike the way they changed the graphics. Would have been a lot better if they'd tried to make it look identical to the Neo Geo original. As for the Saturn version I thought that was cancelled.

Maybe some of you already knew this but I never realised that Sammy had been developing a sequel to Viewpoint for N64. It was called Viewpoint 2064 and the game was never released.

In addition to the systems listed by Cat in the first post Viewpoint was also released for the Sharp X68000 and the FM Towns Marty. Anyone here actually tried these versions? You can emulate these systems but I haven't tried it yet. Here's a video of the Sharp X68000 version. Graphically it looks ok but they've removed some enemies and also the music is inferior.

I ONLY HAVE...
the PAL version of VPoint for the PS1. The game seems alright, but I've heard before that it is (obviously?) inferior to the AES version... dunno about the NGCD version though.

I got it off eBay years ago for 7, so I'm not complaining! Grin

As for a Saturn release? Didn't even know one had even been planned, let alone cancelled!

HAVE TO SAY...
VP2064 don't look all that great BUT I would definitely have sunk my teeth right into it back in the day! I love my rail-shooter action... Headbang

I am not a fan of shooters, this game is an exception though as it looks brilliant, I remember the first time I see it in the arcades and couldnt believe how cool some of the bug type enemies looked, plus the music is good too, cant play it for shit though.

I was just watching some videos of the 1999 Tokyo Game Show on Youtube and found some rare footage of the unreleased sequel to Viewpoint. I thought a few of my fellow Viewpoint fans might find it of interest.

http://www.youtub...WYNUDAM_xc

That Youtube channel features a lot of other footage of TGS '99. Well worth a look.

the ship and bullets look very faithful to the 2D version. It's looks a bit like they have mixed it with Tron or maybe Battlezone.

Here's an Edge Magazine review of Viewpoint, this was the 2nd time they reviewed it, it's score actually went up by one point this time round Smile
