Magical Drop 3 is the last entry to the Magical Drop series. Its also the best one! It includes all characters from the previous games, whom are based on tarot cards, and is incredibly balanced sans the hidden characters. ^^;
Its one of my faves on the system! Its so fun to kick people's butts in this game. ;D
Magical Drop 3
Genre: Puzzle Players: 2 Size:174 megs Released on: AES, MVS, Neo CD, Sega Saturn, PSX, Wii
Magical Drop is played in a style and gameplay similar to Compile's (now Sega's) Puyo Puyo and Taito's Puzzle Bobble franchises; a "stack" of random colored bubbles descend from the top, and a player is defeated when a bubble hits the bottom. Bubbles can be picked up and dropped by the player's "clown" at the bottom, and are destroyed when three or more of the same color are put together on a single column. "Chains" are formed either when a single drop caused a chain reaction, or when more than one group of bubbles is destroyed in quick succession. The game is normally played with two players (one may be a computer opponent), and chains cause the opponent's stack to descend faster.
MD3 is the greatest puzzle game on the NG, reason well being is that you can play all the tarot's (minus the Black Pierrot unless the use of cheats or whatever), other then that, It's also notoruius for its difficulty, has an adventure mode, and more, although you have to set it to Jp or get the Jp version for the character voices. Plus, this isn't the last MD game though (on the NG at least), there is also a game for the PS1 called Magical Drop F(inal) in which its the same game, but more cuter and better, and they also transform too.
This puzzle game really hits the spot. The new characters that appeal to me are Death, Moon, Fortune, Temperance and Young Strength. Young Strength has superseded Old Strength, although he is still playable by a means of holding the C button whilst pressing the A button on Young Strength.
Many of the characters doubles have improved colour choice like World's double has a lighter red hair colour and white strips instead of awful orange hair. The worst of colour choice is Empress. Tan coloured skin and silky pink are a sickly combination. The older double of Empress from Magical Drop II looked a lot better. Sun's double looks like a lump of ice-cream. It puzzles me why Sun is diapered, surely his flames would reduce to ash. The ending of the Challenge mode was quite unexpected, I never thought Fortune would age regress after shrieking like mad. So much for being fortunate.
The Magical Journey is a delightful challenge to undertake, like an old board game I used to play. If the Magical Journey had randomised layouts it sure would have made the game even more fun to play over again.
The pity about this game is that they never remade it with miniture character versions to replace the clowns like they did in the SNES version of Magical Drop 3. Also there isn't very much voice variety throughout the characters.

My all-time favourite puzzle game not just on the Neo Geo but for any system. I love the different characters and the graphics are nice and colourful with good animation. Gameplay is very fast paced and addictive. It's great in single player mode especially since they've added the very original Magical Journey mode but this game is of course best played with 2 players. It really gets very intense playing this with another player. I wasn't aware of Magical Drop F that Stray mentioned so I might check that out in the future.
This game is damned awesome. I never got good at it, but loved playing it. The bad thing is that this game reminds me of my ex, we used to play this game together. So the game is kinda ruined for me. Anybody else have this problem with any Neo-Geo game? Probably just me.
shot in the eye
shot in the brain
shot in the ass...
Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to play Magical Drop 3 (or any of the prequels), probably I have to catch up. Let's see if it can challenge with my all time favorite puzzle game Puzzle Bobble 2...
No, not really like puzzle bobble aside from the match 3 basis. The game is far more complex, and in my opinion more geared for competitive play, which is odd for puzzle games. At least give the original a swing if you can find it. The third is the crowning glory, though. Never played with the hidden characters, though I think that may be a good thing as everyone says their patterns are cruelly imbalanced. The game has great graphics, decent sounds, and some forgettable music, but the overall game design is awesome, with or without the aesthetics.
