NONA's art-style, Stylish or Crap
I've heard a lot of different opinions on NONA's art-style,
some say it's awesome, others say it's utter crap.
So what do you think?

I personally think his style is pretty hit and miss,
on one hand he draws the coolest Orochi saga Kyo I've ever seen,
but on the other hand... well, just look at his Orochi Yashiro from 2002.
But overall, i really like his art, it adds a lot of personality to the game,
and I'd choose His art over Falcoon's any day of the week.

Kula from 2001
Kyo from 2002

Black Shroud
I'll choose Eiji Shiroi or Kitasenri anytime over Nona/Falcoon
Nona did the character portrait art in '01 right? If so, he is capable of being absolutely TERRIBLE. I mean look at some of the winner art as well, some fighters look mentally challenged.

At the same time, I have seen him do decent stuff.

Still ... as bad as Nona can be, Falcoon is the absolute worst. Jesus Christ do I hate how he makes SNK characters looks like fashion victims.

Yeah, the '01 ingame art was terrible.
He was actually told to make his style closer to '94's for '02.
His best work is definitely SVC Chaos.

^ Well good thing they told him to do that. 2002's art was decent, at least.

I know he did the offciall art for SVC Chaos, but do you know if he did the dialogue portraits and character-select portraits for SVC Chaos as well? I really like the in-game art for SVC chaos, and of course the animated intro was awesome.

Yeah! The King of Fighters 2001 artwork is horrible, probably the wosrt artwork in the KOF series. KOF 2002 artwork was ok. The SVC Chaos artwork wasn't so bad either. I liked Shermie's KOF 2002 artwork.

all round. I think the SVC artwork rocks (especially the promo artwork, the full character portraits!) BUT, as everyone has said... 01 art is dire! It makes KOF look like a comedy episode! In particular, the character select screen on the Neo version (The standalone PS2 version attempted to fix this).

and indeed, if this IS Nona's work, this is could be my fave portrait of Ryu. I love how aggressive it is. It really, for me captures the essence of the REAL Ryu, as opposed to all those mang-esque Capcom portraits you see - something less light-hearted. Ryu IS the man, and this picture does that 'image' justice...

Yeah, '01's Artwork is attrocious, some characters are fine, but look at Yuri, Ralf, and some others, if you know where I'm getting at. Fixed in '02 though.
His work portrays all characters in a feminine way, IMO.
i dont think anyone likes 01's art esp the character portraits which look demeneted. its like he was taking the p*ss but somehow no one at SNK noticed until the game had gone out.

i dont know much about any of the artists im afraid but you'd think someone would be directing them. as far as KOF goes i really like the look of 98 with all the bright colours. 2002 is great but sprites look a bit messy at times. the guy who did MOTW is good! Smile there was a little 'interview' (more anecdotetal) piece with Falcoon i scanned in for this site, he wasnt talking about SNK too much as far as i remember.

IIRC, 2000-2003 was a dark period for SNK. It was owned by Azure, a lesser known entertainment company. To put it bluntly, they pushed out a lot of crap during this time, but not purposely; I believe Azure simply lacked experience in the gaming industry.
Edited by shion on 10. May 2010 21:04
actually i read on the azure wikki page that they did that on purpose and thats why the main snk guy left the snk company (then under Azure) and made playmore and after they bought out some of their copyrights and sued azure and got a lot of money out of them so they bought the remaining copyrights as well and after that they renamed them self in snk playmore
I hated Nona's stuff for KOF 2001, but I love a lot of his other work. I never realised, but according to this link he worked on Real Bout as well??? I agree about the SVC art and in particular that Ryu picture - it's awesome!

I must admit that I actually like Falcoon though, his stuff is not to everyones taste and pretty far from SNK's original designs for the characters, but I was happy when he was hired for KOF 2003 I must admit. And as it's a seperate entity to the 2D series, I could stomach the kind of costumes he came up with for Maximum Impact too.

Shinkiro is still the man imho though, I look at any of his art, even the newer stuff he's done for Capcom etc, and it just screams 1990's SNK at their best to me!
