Deadly Sport (Sammy, unreleased)
1983parrothead
Anyone ever heard of Sammy's unreleased 1994 fighting game full of digitized sprites titled Deadly Sport? It's one of the few fighting arcade games not emulated with MAME, yet, along with Jaleco's Super Strong Warriors, IGS's Alien Challenge and Viccom's Neo-Geo version of The Eye of Typhoon (if the prototype exists).

HI AND WELCOME...
to the NGFL forums. 'If' you're planning on hanging around beyond one or two posts, please feel free to introduce yourself in the 'ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES LOUNGE' (right at the top of the site window) - remember to tell us some juicy goodness regarding your gaming preferences etc too!

AS FOR DEADLY SPORT...?
Personally, I have never even heard of Deadly Sport, or indeed and of those other random fighters either - aside Eye of Typhoon - I've heard of that one before!

Admittedly, it would be nice to try and find some info on any of these games Hmm

If anyone is the man for the job, it's our top-researcher... the legendary 'Merlin'! He usually deals with this sort of thing as it massively interests him. He recently managed to find a flier and shared it's details r.e. Crystal Legacy. The NeoGeo game today known as Breakers!... Here's a link to what he found: http://img63.imag...legacy.jpg

He also did all the research for our thread on Eye of Typhoon too...

Here's the thread: http://www.neogeo...rowstart=0

Hopefully this thread will generate some interest for you. Thanks for mentioning Deadly Sports though... never heard of it BUT being quite the fan of Digitised fighters, I'd really like to play it! Hmmm... some screenshots would be great, wouldn't they?

Hi 1983parrothead. I'm glad to see you signed you to the forums. As you know I'm always interested in obscure arcade fighters including unreleased prototypes. Deadly Sport is one that I had never heard of before so thanks for bringing it to our attention. While I generally am not too keen on fighting games which feature digitized graphics I'd still like to give this a try so hopefully there's a chance it will be emulated one day.

Thanks Ninja. Smile I should say though that it was actually 1983parrothead who kindly sent me the link to the flyer a few days ago. I had only seen the front previously. Parrothead is very knowledgeable when it comes to these less well known fighting games.

As for Alien Challenge well I'm hopeful that before long this will be playable on Mame. I know that someone at Mame Italia has the pcb and that the game is already added to Mame although still non working. Here's a video for anyone who hasn't seen this game before:

When I saw Merlin's gameplay video of the MS-DOS version of The Eye of Typhoon, I was proud of him uploading the gameplay video and other stuff related to it. When I commented on some of his gameplay videos, he invited me to be friends with him, and so I did.

For Deadly Sport, I first heard about it here:

http://013.iza-yo...c/a-et.htm

For Super Strong Warriors, I found the arcade flyer of it here:

Correct. I was the one who found that image of the front and back sides of the flyer.

Anyway, nice to see you here too, Merlin. Not every fighting game with digitized sprites is trying to be like Mortal Kombat. Before Mortal Kombat had digitized sprites, there were N.A.R.C. (first to have digitized sprites), The Last Apostle Puppet Show (known in Japan as Reikai Doushi: Chinese Exorcist; the first fighting game with digitized sprites) and Pit Fighter (first fighting game with people as digitized sprites).

For IGS's Alien Challenge, I believe this is a better gameplay video of it:

http://www.youtub...amp;fmt=18

I don't know if Master Huang in Alien Challenge and Master Huang in Martial Masters are the same character or not. I hear some people say that they are not the same, but it's hard for me to believe that.

Yes you're quite right in saying not every fighting game with digitized graphics is trying to be like Mortal Kombat. I did unfairly campare Jackie Chan Fists of Fire to the MK series in the past but it's clear when playing it more that it does play a lot differently. That Reikai Doushi game is really quite strange but the visuals do look impressive for a late 80s game. I would really like to give Deadly Sport a try one day if it's possible.

Thanks for the link to the Alien Challenge video. It was me who found it originally on a Chinese video site, posted about it at SRK and then alexgizh posted it on Youtube.

I don't mean to be a dick, but this game looks terrible. I know looks can be deceiving. Has anybody ever played it, does it play well? That could be a redeeming factor.

The Kung-Fu Master: Jackie Chan (and its update, Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire: Jackie Chan Densetsu) still has some blood and a few death moves, but of course it plays like several Neo-Geo fighting games. According to the game's credits, the producer of it was Jackie Chan himself. Here is a playthrough of The Kung-Fu Master: Jackie Chan at Nico Nico Douga (NND) (requires registering a free account):

PART 2

PART 3

In Alien Challenge, I'm not sure if he is or is based on Santa Claus or not, because the Japanese names for both don't match; however, the description reads that he is from Antarctica (using Google's translator) or the South Pole (using Excite's translator).

Anyway, let's not turn Deadly Sport's topic into a topic about other fighting games. If you want to talk about the other ones, find a topic about any of them that's already created and bump it. Otherwise, create one.

Which game are you talking about? Neither Deadly Sport nor Alien Challenge have been fully dumped and MAME'd, yet.

*bump*

On May 20 this year (2010), I showed Dan of The Arcade Flyer Archive the auction for the Deadly Sport arcade flyer, and he appreciated me for the heads up while he bought it. On June 14 this year, he uploaded it to TAFA:

Good work tracking down that flyer Parrothead and to Dan for making it available on his site. It's interesting to get a look at the flyer and especially those screenshots. I've got to say it does seem to have a fairly strange mix of characters including a viking warrior, a native american and a clown!

I wonder if Scarab (Survival Arts, Battle Monsters) was responsible for this.

Someone at the SRK forum mentioned that there was a Deadly Sport PCB for sale recently on yahoo.co.jp auctions. If PCBs are on sale like that there's a good chance the game will get dumped eventually.

I hope this game gets dumped, this game looks so damned shitty that I almost NEED to play it. I know it'll be a laugh-fest, the poster alone is hilariously bad.God knows I won't spend any money to play this POS, hopefully it'll come to MAME someday.

I don't see it mentioned in their works list:

http://web.archiv..._works.htm

Perhaps Sammy borrowed Seta and Visco's assistance, because of the arcade game using the SSV (Sammy, Seta and Visco) arcade board. Don't know what Seta did that was very good, but Visco was developing Tenrin no Syo Chicago/Crystal Legacy (later known as Breakers), back when Deadly Sport was nearly (but not) released. Deadly Sport could have been like Breakers.

Hope they will perfectly dump it. Some MAME ROMs need more work, like Ninja Baseball Bat Man's shadow seen in its intro. Speaking of Ninja Baseball Bat Man, I was talking with its creator Drew Maniscalco recently about creating a website that tells all about Ninja Baseball Bat Man. I will tell more about it in the Irem Corporation thread when he finishes the website.

To stay on Deadly Sport's topic, here are more screenshots of it I found. Some websites like this one say that Deadly Sport was formally known as "Street Brawl":

Anger might be fun, but I heard John Tesh on his radio show say it is best to let anger go. It's unhealthy, and that's what the AVGN, Irate Gamer, and their imitators should do.

Whenever anyone sees a digitized sprite based fighting game released after Mortal Kombat, they either often say "It looks like MK." or "Another MK clone!", sometimes just because of it having digitized sprites, while forgetting that Reikai Doushi and Pit-Fighter started it. Sometimes people don't care what comes first. Street Fighter: The Movie arcade and home versions used digitized sprites to match the appearance of the film.

Deadly Sport may look crappy, but its gameplay might be as good as (if not, better than) Survival Arts or even Kaneko's Jackie Chan fighting games. When the Happy Video Game Nerd played Raf World/Journey to Silius, he didn't care much about the poor plot and just enjoyed the game, and this is what should be done to video games that look awful, but have very good gameplay.

Its spiritual predecessor, Survival Arts, does have poor plot and plain-looking characters (like Breakers), but unlike MK 1 and 2, Survival Arts had a combo system (I even accidentally performed combos when I first played it) and has weapons that drop on stage for players to pick up and use (later popularized in Nintendo's SSB series). I heard Plexosolarasolas say that he will upload a combo video of it, if tobemorecrazy doesn't do one.

Hmmm "anger"? You read me wrong, dewd. I'm not angry at the fact that this game (Deadly Sport) looks shitty and like a laugh-fest. How can you NOT laugh at this game?

You've never played it, yes? Why have such high hopes when there really isn't anything to go on except the scraps of information posted on this thread. Sorry, but the screen shots and flyers scream nothing but "cheap ripp-off" (from various sources). How can you honestly look at that absolutely cheesey flyer (and screen shots) and say ; "this game might be good"? LOL

Like I said... I actually want to play this game, but for different reasons than yourself.
