Hello! Sorry for the delays in Game of the Week! But its back! ^^;

Ganryu is a pretty obscure game, even for the Neo Geo. With that said, I've never played it myself, so let's hear what you guys have to say... ^^;

I can't fully judge Ganryu because I haven't played it enough yet, but from what I have played I definitely enjoy it. One thing's for sure, if you plan on playing this game in an arcade say goodbye to your quarters. It's definitely got that old school arcade difficulty comparable to games like Shinobi. The graphics aren't the best the Neo can offer, but they're not bad and at times they can be really good. The title screen is beautiful! Seriously, it might be my favorite title screen from any Neo game... or if not it's at least top 5. The music is pretty cool too and very Japanese sounding with the shamisen and shakuhachi featured prominently. The ability to play through as two characters with different abilities is pretty cool too.

The game is kind of obscure, so I'd be afraid to see prices for it. But if you like action games like Shinobi and don't mind playing through emulation I definitely think it's worth your time.

never played it. I like the intro and the atmosphere. But it looks pretty lame for a 99 release:(

I think graphically in 1999 Visco could have done better. It's not that it looks bad, but this was three whole years after the first Metal Slug which definitely looks a lot better.

After playing it more I have to reiterate what I said before about the difficulty. It's very hard, but the more you play it you learn what to expect and it gets easier.

I used to think this game wasn't that great but I never really gave it a fair chance. After spending some more time with it the game has grown on me a lot. The graphics actually look quite nice and colourful. The second half of stage 2 looks especially nice. At first it can seem really tough but with a little practice the first few stages aren't so bad really.

It's nice to have a Shinobi style game on the Neo Geo. There's nothing else quite like it on the system. For anyone who has never tried this game or wasn't impressed with it when they tried it out before I'd say please give it another try. You might be surprised.

I need to play this game more as ive only had a few blasts and it did not grab me like Shinobi or Shadow Dancer on Megadrive . I think the graphics look really out of place on the NG but people say it gets better as it goes on . I will have another look at it this weekend but I can kinda see why its a obscure unloved title but I and others could be missing a really good game here unless we try it properly.

I was pretty enamored of this game for a while, mainly because of the story element, goofy as it is. I tired of it though. The gameplay just isn't that refined and the drop weapons often hinder you more than they help. The only drop I would generally take is the shurikens but even they slow down boss fights if you have a lot of them. The bombs I avoid like the plague and the aura-type weapon has very limited applications the way I play. On normal settings, I have to say this is one of the easier NG games I've played insofar as it wasn't long before I could get through it with modest credit allocation.

I think the graphics of this game draw more criticism than they should. Most aspects of this game look SNESish, yes, but there's plenty of stuff that would explicitly require a more powerful engine . . . it's just not really important stuff. And yes, in light of how amazing most late-90s NG games looked, this looks pretty bad.

Welcome Skytraveler. Smile Nice to see you posting at the forums. You could always introduce yourself in the arrivals and departures part of the forum if you want. You sound like you're pretty good at the game. I personally do find it fairly challenging at times. The stages aren't too bad it's the boss battles that can be quite tough. I still can't figure out how to beat the third boss at all yet.

There's been very little discussion about this game so far. It'd be nice to hear a few more opinions from other people especially since it's not a game that gets discussed very often.

Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah, the third boss has some awkward shifts in pattern with the spiked ball trajectory and the hit detection on the bugs it summons can be awkward; that's usually what gets me there. The next stage ramps up the difficulty quite a bit with more mandated use of the grappling hook and there's a wall jumping section with spikes that usually slows me down. Definitely not an easy game but I found it a bit less frantic than the typical NG platformer.
