Best Samurai Shodown game on NeoGeo
Yao
I just hate the overall design of 5. The character select screen looks horrible. The stupid stupid stupid mid-boss hammer guy is as horrible as this bullshit Arrow-girl with her little Pokemon friend. SNKP wanted to change the tone of the game and wanted to make it lighter, more friendly, colorful, funny and louder, so that all the 12 year old girls in Tokyo would like the game too. And by doing that they killed what made Samurai Shodown great in the first place, the atmosphere, the smoothness, the music that makes you feel like really being in medieval Japan.

At least they fixed a lot of this in 5Special.

3 and 5 certainly seem to be the bogeymen of the series!

Powerwave
basashi im not that keen on V it was actualy the first sam sho game that i played and it put me right off the series and i was lucky to see a vid of sam sho 2 and realised that it was just a dud game and isnt the best example of the series. im not quite sure why i dont like it i think its just the gereral feel of the game dosnt work for me. it dosnt have the same beauty and atmosphere as ss2.

I really like 3 though. Because it brought us one of the most creative and stylish characters in SNK history, Basara (even though he is kind of a rip-off from a character in "Ninja Scroll"Wink. I love the new sprites and the overall atmosphere. And its the game were Genjuro really became badass!!
And the best Boss character in the series

Incredible game, even though it might be broken. I don't find things like this that important. If there are some glitches, I don't mind.

i should be in bed but ive got the 'one more go' bug.

enjoying 4 - ill be able to say whether its better than 3 for myself when i go home for the xmas hols. i definitely prefer the backgrounds in 3 but i like the kyushu map in this game. quality.

i actually like the character select screen in 5 for the record, but think that arrow - firing tart is cack.

im not sure how sold i am on yoshitora either, ninja - his heavy slash (if i remember correctly) is absolutely ridiculous!

that they changed the select screen music into a samurai pop tune as annoying as mobile ring tones, alone made me angry. The original form the other games was unbeatable!

But it's Samurai Shodown, not Marvel vs. Capcom. There's no excuse for a game like Samurai Shodown to have such simple infinites in it, it's not a combo oriented game. It's not easy to ignore something that every single Haohmaru player out there knows about and will try to exploit at every chance they get.

Ok I can definitely see your point. If you played it regularly against opponents who were using infinites against you it would be pretty annoying. I only play SS3 online with one person and neither of us would ever try and use an infinite in a match no matter how easy it might be to pull off. I think it's best just to ignore these kind of issues and not try to exploit them.

merlin, i think ill agree with you about the time limit in 4. in 3, i loved the tension in the matches, especially with kyoshiro. its great waiting for the time to strike - surely this new element will change the game no end in 4?

anyway, as its my birthday tomorrow i thought id blow some dough and treat myself, so i picked up 4 today. im just about to power it up and give it a go!

It was a pretty bad idea having a time limit. I can't think of another fighter that has a feature like this. I can remember one time getting to Amakusa's castle on 1 credit with Haohmaru on level 4 difficulty and I arrived too late. I seems a bit unfair really. It's quite a nice original idea though that you've got a rival in the game that you have to fight after the bosses. Congrats on getting SS4 by the way. It'll be interesting to hear whether you prefer 3 or 4 once you've had more time with it. I hope you have a happy birthday too!

One thing I really love in 3 and 4 that I forgot to mention earlier is when the background stage changes in the final round when you're both low on energy. It looks very cool.

That I still want SS V after all this is a miracle!

But I must admit, my enthusiasum for it has been dented somewhat. Anyway, it wasn't like I was going to buy it soon - not with the current state of my tattered finances! :(

Yao
don't buy it! I only have it to complete my SS collection

Forgot about that too. I love it. It adds real tension to the final seconds of a match.

My favorite is SS 4. I like the gameplay better then others 3 slashes and one kick is the best for me. Also i really like the atmosphere of SS 4 and we used to only have SS 4 at arcade so played it most.

I remember a boy was crying loudly because he couldn't beat Zankuro Grin it was very funny and kind of sad too.

Brother, everyone has their own taste. If you enjoy it that much, just get it. The good thing is the Samurai Shodown collection for PS2 is cheap, get it and play the hell out of it before you spend on an AES or MVS cartridge.

Yeah I agree with you. SS2 is a tough game, I still enjoy playing it. Mostly I play with Genjuro (I guess you say I'm more geared toward the anti-hero). And SS2 is the one of the few Neo-Geo game that I can't clear with 1 credit. I beat anybody up until I get to Mizuki.

Hey in the Neo-Geo.com forum I just read that there has been anoter version of Samurai Shodoen 5 Special, on Wikipedia I found:

"A further upgraded version of the game, Samurai Shodown V Special Final Edition, was also released, but is very rare."

Does anybody here know anything about it? I really want to see that game...

Its one of those games that I want that I don't understand why... I just saw it on eBay and said - I'm going to put that on my shopping list!

I suppose its got more colourful graphics than 2, 3 or 4, which I like. I love colourful games like Real Bout Special, Outrun 2, Art of Fighting 3, etc. I also like the box art as well, it would look stunning on my shelf....

I also think the new characters in that game look fun. Thing is though, I'm not a huge fan of the series so far, so I've no real rush to buy any of them at the minute. And I've bought plenty of games recently, which should keep me busy for a while.

That's some very interesting info there Yao. I had never heard of that before. It's not mentioned on the Neo Geo master list but I read there's a planned update for that coming soon. I'm guessing SSVSFE is probably MVS only. It would be interesting to know what the differences are between this and the regular SSVS.

Maybe it refers to SSVSp "Fixed"?
