... Overall this game is decent, although very average. It can be fun for a while especially in two player mode, but it does get boring very fast. The game is also very easy and will not take you very long to complete. However, if you really want to play a platform game, you could do worse than try this.

i think it's very good with some minor flaws. i think the graphics are great, gameplay is fun and even a bit humorous, but the only thing that makes it a bit difficult is the plane switching aspect. it becomes a bit confusing to jump back and forth between planes and sometimes you are blocked from doing so. its hard to tell when its necessary to make the jump!
other than that, great game! i've only played the NGCD version of it however.

Very fun game! When I first tried it I only planned on taking it for a test run but I couldn't stop playing until I beat it. I absolutely love the plan switching feature and think it would be an excellent addition to other side scrollers. While I know the game isn't perfect I think it could have been the start to a hit franchise had SNK ever developed a sequel.
Also, Roddy and Cathy should have been in NeoGeo Battle Colosseum.

I have had this on NGCD for over 10 years and still think graphics are great I was certainly very impressed at the time as the games is from about 95 I think. Its no the most exciting game in the world but its fun and well worth getting if you see it at a price you consider reasonable. With reference to my opinion of Cyberlip I agree its a game that probably deserved a sequel. |

I love Top Hunter. Visually it's very impressive and I like the plane switching in the game. That's a very original idea. Like Reelmojo said a sequel would have been great. I've read people criticizing this game for being too easy but personally I find it very challenging. Maybe I just suck at the game!

Now this is my type of game! I don't care for fighters, but it's these massively impressive 2D games that got me into the Neo Geo. Me and my girlfriend spent a night beating this game. The 2 player mode is excellent, and makes the plane switching more enjoyable. The NGCD has unlimited continues, so playing with a beginner is a blast as they don't have to try and keep up. I don't know why this game doesn't get more praise, its gorgeous and the controls are perfect. A winning combination!

Its certainly pretty unique on the Neo Geo. Had it come out on say the SNES would we all be singing its praises so much? It might have disappeared without trace, but still, there's fun to be had with it, but I think its far from the best games on the system. |

That's one heck of a super platformer. It was very anticipating on my first play wondering what I was going to get next from planet to planet at then at last Captain Klakton's Mothership. If Roddy and Cathy were selectable characters instead of Roddy for P1 and Cathy for P2, the game would have been better to play, even though both characters' abilities are not to very different. The Battle Machines you ride on are handy but it gets a bit irritating when you bump off it, the moment you knock into something hostile. I have preference to the arcade/AES music as opposed to the Neo-Geo CD music.
The best bit is that you can perform moves very like Ryo Sakazaki whilst you play. Perhaps that's what you get when you cross a scrolling platformer with a fighting game.
Of the five Pirate Masterminds, my favourite is Misty and Dr. Burn. I don't like the look of pig ugly Big Man. |

That's a good question. I think what makes Top Hunter so great is the excellent graphics which really aren't possible on any other platform of the era. Second, the controls are excellent, and better than most games, up there with Metal Slug. I'm not sure if that's because of the game, or the excellent Neo Geo controllers (whether that be the stick or pad).
As a whole, I think Top Hunter embodies what the Neo Geo is all about, flashy graphics, superior sound, responsive controls, and an excellent multi player experience. Best game on the system? No. Excellent game? Absolutely. Possible on the SNES? Not a chance.

I never know how to approach this game. I mean, we all wish the neo had a more robust library with a larger variety of titles but the quarter munching platformer just boggles me. Should I be super critical or forgiving?
