Breakers/Breakers Revenge Discussion

True I don't take breakers as a TOTAL SF2 ripp off, but there is no denying that Breakers (like many other games) was heavily influenced by SF2. This though, is easily looked over because the game itself is better than SF2, IMO. If nothing else... it plays better and looks better, IMO. So, not a complete Rip-off, but yes it obviously tries to emulate the SF2 formula. Most games that tried to rip-off SF2 were forgettable and failed hard, Breakers is far from a failure.

But if most people like SF2 over later 2D fighters rip-offs, then how come most people I hear like Tekken over Virtua Fighter? Critics such as ScrewAttack like Virtua Fighter more, not only because it started the 3D-fighting genre, but also because they see what most gamers don't usually see in it: it's more SERIOUS than Tekken.

I AGREE...
with what 2D said about Breakers. Literally.

Now, about VF & Tekken: I prefer VF myself > Tekken, but it's not because it's more serious. I think it's simply a more rewarding gaming experience and I feel like I have to really work to get the best out of it. Tekken, or indeed, SoulCalibur on the otherhand, offer very good results without having to try at the game (i.e. button mashing CAN and usually will work).

Now, you have to understand that 2D fighters and 3D fighters are from different eras really, and as such, the gamer had/has changed somewhat over the years. In the case of the more modern 3D fighter, the casual gamer today wants optimum results from a fighting game (a genre not taken as seriously today from the wider audience) whilst putting little effort in. As such, Soul Calibur (especially) fits this role perfectly. It allows people to feel powerful, skilled and good about themselves whilst putting minimum effort in! 'These' people actually believe that they are good the game too(!). VF on the other hand (aside Lei Fei) doesn't really accommodate this kind of behaviour, and as such, when the 'majority' play VF, it punishes this mentality, in turn 'telling' them that they're 'sh*t' at VF, in turn making them hate it. Thus the majority today now prefer Tekken & SCalibur.

That's my theory/2 cents...

OFF TOPIC:

I used to have a Sega Saturn and its version of Virtua Fighter, but like my earliest time playing the SNES version of Street Fighter II: World Warrior, I couldn't fully understand the main points of them, while the button combos were so uncomfortable to perform, I became bored of playing fighting games like them, until M.U.G.E.N came out and made me familiar with a lot of fighting games, causing me to gain interest in them, while I became brave enough to do button combos.

I've seen the AVGN make fun of the 32X version of Virtua Fighter, while criticizing about the gravity in it being like the Moon's gravity. Virtua Fighter is to plain, raw broccoli, as Tekken is to cooked broccoli with spicy ranch dressing or spicy cheddar cheese. Virtua Fighter may taste bland, but it better this way than Tekken kicking the 3D fighting game genre up a notch.

Gameplay can be confusing whether they are awful, challenging, or both. In other words, whether the game sucks, you suck at it, or both.

ON TOPIC:

I assume that Visco mainly focused on developing the gameplay of Breakers, due to "gameplay" being the most important thing in video game development, followed by graphics for attracting viewers and especially allowing players to see what they are doing. Without graphics, you can't see what you are playing (however, look up the GBA game SoundVoyager). The characters and stages were left bland and the music was being repetitive (even their slightly superior Neo Geo CD versions), due to them being the least important ones.

Anyway, its Wikipedia article has been expanded with more info, but needs more citations:

I always found it amusing that alot of people don't know about the Breakering techniques in Breakers. It's often omitted in strategy guides found at gamefaqs. Makes me kinda sad this gameplay mechanic isn't widely known in this game, unless you're among those you play the game seriously.

I'm also pretty sure Sho still has his infinite in Revenge...

You're right Running Wild. I think a lot of people aren't aware of Breakering in the game and it's surprising that the faqs for the game don't seem to mention it. I would highly recommend people to use the Breakers Revenge Shoryuken wiki as their guide to the game. It's got an in-depth section about Breakering including a list of moves that each character can use. They also made a video to demonstrate it.

I'm definitely not an advanced player at this game and still need to learn how and when to use Breakering effectively.

Breakers is a good game but the little time i spend on playing NeoGeo I prefer solid fighting games like KOF-Series or Mark of the Wolves not to forget Super Tag Battle. Cheers:

RiKo mentioned to me a while back that a developer (Dreamawake Games) was planning to port Breakers Revenge to the iPhone. The developer recently posted on the Breakers facebook page about it and has launched an appeal:

http://www.kickst...me-for-the

He also mentioned that he's got permission from Visco to do this and is looking at a possible
XBL port too. I don't have an iPhone but the thought of Breakers possibly being on XBL one day is very interesting.

Interesting. Considering how fast the game is, it would be great to see it on Live (assuming it's done well). Here's hoping...

XBLA Breakers Revenge would be an instant must buy for me! License GGPO for the netcode and you'd have a sure-fire winner!

I don't have a smart phone of any kind and I can't even imagine a fighter could play well with those controls on one, but any exposure for Breakers is a good thing I guess. If this and a possible XBLA port got popular it would be insane to think we could possibly finally see a true Breakers sequel!

Happy 15th Anniversary Breakers!

A few minutes before I wrote this reply, I started playing some Visco games for the first time in my life, starting with Panic Road, which probably was Visco's first game; and ending with the original Breakers only for this day. Even though it's labeled with "Taito", Visco was one of the companies under the Taito umbrella according to Tony Gonzales.

Happy anniversary, Breakers! It sucks to think it's been out for 15 years, but I've only known about it for the last few. Games this good need more exposure!

Breakers (Revenge) - the best non-SNK fighting game on the Neo Geo?

This jewel really deserves more attention from our side. Too bad Visco didn't produce any sequels so far instead of all these Pachinkos...

THE BEST fighting game on Neo Geo imo Smile At first i wasn't keen on the stylings and how it is a bit of a SF rip-off., but the gameplay is so good that you don't care after a little playtime. Quite a lot of Neo Geo versus fighting games can feel a little slow when you go back to them after playing modern fighting games, but Breakers is ultra responsive and fast too. A great game. Only downside for some Neo Geo owners will be that it's a capcom style fighter, but for me that's a plus . I think it's a lot better than SF2, even Hyperfighting. It just plays better....awesome Smile

Thanks for info!

I LOVE this game to death! I'm not an advanced player either, but I think I can pull some of this stuff off. I was aware of the breaking system in this game, but haven't fully understood this jet. Gotta practice Andy

Glad you found it of interest Neros it's a really useful guide to the game. Some FAQs don't
mention breakering.

These days more and more people are realizing just how good Breakers actually is and that like others have already said it's one of the best fighters on Neo Geo.

Happy 15th Anniversary Breakers!
