What is the Best Game ever?
No messing about. What is the best game ever made? You can choose from all the games you have ever played. So don't feel bad if you haven't played something that you think could be better. Only go for a Neo Geo game if you honesty think it is the best game ever.

You can only pick ONE game, no 2nd, or 3rd choices. I think it is really tough to pick just one game, so good luck Comfort I am going to think about this tonight, since I am not sure what to go for yet Smile

Ooooh thats a really tough question. Like you say it takes some thinking about it...

Used with the kind permission from their creator "Shiny"
Psyvariar 2

No thought required Pfft
There are quite a few games that are and always will be fun no matter how much time passes. But my personal favorite? Super Mario Bros 2. There was a summer that I beat that game almost every day. Some days I played Doki Doki Panic instead, which outside of the obvious graphical differences is actually a harder game due to the lack of a run button and the inability to change characters between levels. Once when I was at my girlfriend's house (ex-girlfriend, this was years ago) she was going to get ready to go so I decided to pop in her copy of Super Mario All Stars and try to beat Mario 2 before she got out of the shower. I beat it before she got in the shower and then had nothing to do for a while.

Ah, good times. I'd list runners up but that kinda defeats the purpose of the thread.

for me my favourite of all time is ..... breakers of corse
Castlevania 4 on the SNES, bloody hard but very rewarding whenever you complete a section.
Don't mention the war! - Basil Fawlty
Impossible to answer.

Zanac for NES
Fight Like A Robot!
I can't really pick one single game as the best ever. However out of all the games I've ever played I think The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion is one of the best (closely followed by TES3 Morrowind). The province of Cyrodiil is a fascinating and beautiful place which I get totally absorbed into. I love the fact that you have complete freedom to do whatever you want whenever you want and there are a multitude of things to do in the game. Someone at Bethesda said it was like a 'virtual life' and that's how I see it too. If anyone hasn't tried Oblivion yet then I'd really recommend that you give it a go on either PC, 360 or PS3.

Great choice Nadanova. I do think that Castlevania IV is one of the best platformers I've ever played. Music, graphics and gameplay are in perfect harmony.

Indeed (porbably) impossible to answer...really have to think hard on that one.
My arcade stuff

"ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn! Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!"
Well done Carmen for being the first to answer Clap. I have heard good things about Psyvariar. Very nice choices everyone else. Merlin - I would really like to play Oblivion, it does sound like the kind of game I would like.

I have decided to go for Soul Calibur on Dreamcast. I have always loved it and I love it still. I have 3 and 4 but SC1 is the most pure and also plays the best.

I don't think there is anything more beautiful or atmospheric than facing Sophita in the Temple of Eurydice with the mists swirling in the background, or fighting against Kilik on the Proving grounds. I love the clash of swords, and the wide range of moves you can do, and how it is super smooth and fast. I think you can be very creative when you fight.

YouTube Video

It is also one of the few games to better its arcade counterpart, and it really made use of the hardware well considering it was quite an early game. It must always be played on Ultra-Hard though Smile

I think I'll go with Suikoden II as my all time favorite, best RPG ever made.
My all time fave game i have just actually installed in my jamma cab ( i had to flip the moniter as it is a vertical game which was bloody hard work ). I plead with everybody who reads this to please try it on MAME it is a obscure Konami beat em up from 1985 called SHAO LINS ROAD or Kicker in the USA , it came out just after Yie Ar Kung Fu & is often considered the sister game or sequel. Imagine a Kung Fu version of Bubble Bobble with lovely oriental music & highly addictive gameplay , i still play it on a regular basis its that good so please guys try it. 2nd or 3rd umm well i would say Yie Ar Kung Fu as it is still a great beat em up after all these years & was the first multi opponent one on one fighter way ahead of its time & as 3rd maybe Last Blade or Sam 4 **PLEASE PLAY SHAO LINS ROAD ** i would love to hear your thoughts guys
riko im a big fan of soul calibar 1 its my favourite soul game closely followed by soul blade for the ps1
Wild Tengu
Garou: Mark Of The Wolves.

SC1 is STILL my fave of the bunch too! I have SC2&3 also (as well as SoulBlade).

SC3 is a VERY close 2nd though! I just think SC1 did everything well enough the first time to pretty much invalidate the sequels!!! I never got on with SC2 regardless of how widely accepted and highly regarded it was. Just didn't look or feel as good to me.

AS FOR SC4... well, I think they could've stopped at 3, that's all I'll say!

OH... and Soul Edge / Blade is ALSO damn legendary stuff. Great game!

I'll ponder a while longer yet... hmmm Hmm

Thanks Ninja Smile I think you are right SC1 just feels the best. When I first played SC4 I thought - this feels slightly slower, and I felt graphics could have been better for a title almost 2 generations on. Also the games have got a bit over-complicated. SC1 had just the right number of opponents and modes. Part of being good at a fighter is learning how your opponents fight, and if there are too many then its harder to do this. I have never played Soul Edge, but I heard it is very good too.

Powerwave - glad to hear you like SC too Smile Not surprised you went for Breakers though. I think if someone cut you then you would bleed Breakers!

Tengu - I'm very pleased to hear that game being mentioned Smile It is one of my favourites too.

Midian - Its good to get a RPG in there, and STE - never played Shaolin's Road, but I have heard the name before Smile

Edge Mag did a new top 100 Games ever recently and - Zelda(64) and Mario 64 were top two places (they always are Smile ) Half Life 2 was third. I can't remember any more, I will have to have a look. Its great that everyone here is going for less obvious choices.

Still Thinking...

Seriously though, I get asked this a lot by ppl (as well as best / fave film ever?)

THESE 2 QUESTIONS... nearly impossible to answer!

Still, I'll try... just... need... more... ... ... more time *gah*

For me it's probably Ys - The Vanished Omens on the Sega Master system. One of the first video games I owned. I actually played the MSX version for a few hours a couple of weeks ago.
eccentric cat
Chrono Cross.... no, wait, Final Fantasy Tactics!

... N-No wait! Chrono Cross... Ara...

Please get back to me. ^^;
