My Game Demo Video
I made a video of the game I have been writing. It is called 'Blaze of Glory' and is a multi-player space shooting combat game. (In this video the enemy is under CPU control)It's a lot like Space War but with other objects you can interact with, I have also given the player a lot of control over how he (or she) flies his ship. There is right and left thrust as well as forward and reverse. There is also a fast turn button and turbo, and a button to increase lateral thrust. If you wanted you could just use left/right thrust forward and shoot, but you won't look as cool! I am a bit rusty in this vid, cos I haven't run it for a few months.

The game works with Playstation joypads and runs at a silky smooth 60fps. (though the vid makes it look not so smooth).

You can see it here - but please watch full screen in Youtube otherwise it all looks a bit small.

YouTube Video

I made a secret in this game where if you fly really fast at a certain spot on the screen you can smash through it and leave the game and fly around inside the computer!

The game does have actual graphics (bitmapped sprites) and a score, but I forgot when I made this video! I toggle them with F5 normally. They are not that great looking but they look better than the collision outlines I am displaying in this demo. E.g. there are yellow wooden crates and the space ship looks less like an arrow, and has a cockpit. They also scale and rotate.

The music is playing in-game (not added afterwards) and yes I stole it from SNK! (KOF 96)This game also has a terrible intro (featuring Ralf as one of the pilots) but I haven't made a video of it yet.

I haven't written anything on this game for 4 months now, but it took me about 7 months to make what I have done so far. Please let me know if you like it. I hope it will be lots of fun to play with friends (there will be up to 4 players on screen in finished game) There is lots more work to do on ship control and enemy AI, and graphics!

Very well done to you sir! I'm liking the physics Smile
Don't mention the war! - Basil Fawlty
I really like the look of the game RiKo. Thumbs Up Like I said in my comment it does remind me a little bit of Solar Jetman on the Nes although on a single screen especially because of the way the ship moves. Like Nadanova said the physics are well implemented in the game. I like the way the pilots fall out of their craft when hit. Playing this in 4 player mode sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

I imagine this must have taken a lot of work to get it to this stage. How much do you have left to do before the project is finished? I wouldn't mind giving the game a try. You could always make it available for download somewhere on the internet when you've completed it.
Thank you for the kind comments Smile

Nadanova - Thank you - I intend for the physics to have even more of an effect on gameplay in the finished version so that falling objects can also damage spaceships and maybe crush them. At the moment nothing happens in terms of damage.

Merlin - thank you - probably lots really. I want to make at least 6 levels to fight on. One will have sea and a cliff (you can crash into). Also I have only made scratch graphics so far, and I will have to draw those properly. Breaking up bitmaps is not possible in realtime so I have to draw all the broken bits seperately - which takes ages. You could play a 2 player game on it at the moment. I would like to make it available as a download when it is finished. I hope it will be a good multiplayer game especially. The enemy ship's AI is a bit terminator like at the moment - it just homes in on you, so its not like fighting a human opponent, so I need to improve that. The best way to fight it is to circle it or to run away at the moment!

Hahahaha I REALLY like what you´ve done so far with the game.

I love the retro look of the game and the pilots screaming while crashing to the ground. Who does the voices, or are they "synthetic"?

Good job my friendThumbs Up

Used with the kind permission from their creator "Shiny"
looking good riko
Thank you guys Smile The pilots voices are just samples I found on the internet. It didn't say where they were from. Just called stuff like 'scream1' and 'scream2' (a bit like the films)

they are actual people though i think Smile

Merlin - I just watched Solar Jetman On YTube, and I can see what you mean. My game is a little inspired by Thrust on the BBC Micro - but its really more Space War inspired. Its mainly the Nuclear Reactor I borrowed from Thrust! (The idea in Thrust is to start the countdown to meltdown - by shooting it, and then escape the planet, its risky but you get more points) I

Solar Jetman looks like it is based on Thrust. It looks like a really good game though. I have Space War on Vectrex and your ships can get bits shot off. I thought that was a cool feature so I put that in my game.

Thats great stuff Riko what do you do for a living i reckon if you aint working for a software house then you are in the wrong job, love the psychics its looks like you have put a lot of work into it
Took me a while to get around to watching this but it looks really cool! Physics based gameplay with destructible environments is always fun. Having falling objects damage ships is a great idea as well. It will add to the gameplay immensely. Think about it, you cause an explosion so debris is flying everywhere and your opponent can't get behind cover in time resulting in his ship getting peppered with rocks. Awesome!
I had never heard of Thrust or Space War RiKo but I just watched some videos of them. Yes you're right the gameplay of Solar Jetman is quite similar to Thrust so it must have been based on it like you say. I can see that Space War is a lot more similar to your game. Anyway keep us updated about any progress you make with this and I'd definitely like to give it a go when you've completed it.
Thanks STE and Mojo Smile . I studied Comp Science at uni, but I have never worked in a computer type job (yet). I do like to make some funny games but I wouldn't want to work on someone else's game. When I was at uni, I played virtually no video games, just cos I got a bit sick of being in front of a screen. I never even played on the MVS in the bar! (which I feel a bit ashamed of now). If I worked programming, I would never feel like doing any of my own.

Mojo - yes I like the way you think Smile I am hoping that the players will be able to use the environment as a weapon. I have plans on other levels for moving walls and opening/shutting gates too.

Merlin - there are some more good Thrust-type games like
Subterrania on Megadrive (I have this game Smile) and also Oids on Atari ST. You are welcome to have a go (on Blaze) of course Smile

Just remembered the scream is actually from original film version of Psycho (Janet Leigh?). The ouch sounds are from a military sounds website. The scream is played at different pitches.

That Subterrania game also looks similar and seems like it would be a fun game. Thanks yes I'd like to try Blaze of Glory out.

I can't stress enough to anyone that has a Nes to get Solar Jetman. It's a really great game which I've spent countless hours playing.

I quite like the idea of trying to make a game myself although it would probably be a lot simpler than Blaze of Glory. I think I might give one of these game editors a go one day like 'Game Maker' for example because I'm too lazy to learn how to program properly like RiKo.
I put a video of the intro of my game up - its pretty bad. lol. It just has scratch (temporary) graphics and the title screen isn't even finished. The SNK characters will be the pilots eventually. If you can watch it that long there is a gemplay demo with the graphics turned on (after the intro), but it went a bit slowly with FRAPS doing its recording. Normally it is smooth though. The intro also looks a bit jerky, but it is normally very smooth too Smile

YouTube Video

Feel free to take the p*ss Smile

Actually I remembered I was orginally making a version of the Intellivision/Amiga game BIP, and it turned into this. There used to be a balloon like thing that floated around too.

In the gameplay demo - not all the objects have graphics drawn for them. Don't worry though all the graphics are placeholder graphics - until I can spend some time to draw some peoper ones.

Now I know why the British do not make video games. Shock J/K Annoy Smile

Nice work. I admire your dedication. I share your interest in development; I hope to write music for handheld and cell phone-based games when I'm out of the service.
Nice intro and demo RiKo. Thumbs Up I'm not surprised to see Ralph making an appearance knowing how much a fan of his you are. The screams in the game are a really nice touch and make me laugh. Keep us posted on future progress with the game.
lol Tobalman. Well now you know Smile I do miss the old days when British programmers made games about people going down the shops, and getting drunk. I wish they would come back - it would make a nice change from space marines and nasty gangsters.

Let us know when you get some of your music into a game, its a shame you can't steal SNK music like me, but I'm sure your music is very good too.

Merlin - Thanks Merlin, hopefully the intro and game graphics will improve a lot. Yes I am thinking of keeping Ralph as one of the pilots. Just so he can go 'Yeah!' when he wins Smile (also it wil l save me drawing another one!)
