Any good Beat em up's?
I wanna buy myself a game that is not a fighter and decided to go with a beat em up, so what do you guys recommend?
GeeseTheDuck when it comes to Neo Geo beat 'em ups I'd recommend giving Sengoku 3 a go. The graphics are pretty impressive, you have a choice of 6 characters each with their own special moves and you can very easily pull off nice combos.

Aside from that Sengoku 2, Mutation Nation and Robo Army are well worth a look.
MAN... you have been hammering the forums lately! Where were you hiding all this time dude??!

ANYWAY... not sure what systems you own, but personal faves are:
GodHand (PS2)
Captain Commando (PS2 - Capcom Classics Vol2)
Streets of Rage 1 & 2 (MD)
Final Fight 1 (PS2 - Capcom Classics Vol1)
Final Fight 3 (SNES)
Ninja Warriors (SNES)
Urban Reign (PS2)
Tenchi Wo Kurau 2 (SAT - JP)
Dungeons & Dragons Collection (SAt - JP)
Guardian Heroes (SAT)
Die Hard Arcade (SAT) / Dynamite Deka (SAT - JP)
Dynamite Cop (DC) / Dynamite Deka 2 (DC - JP)
Shadow Warriors (fave game on the Amiga as well as IK+)
DoubleDragon2 (NES ONLY! Best version of DD ever! Trust me on this. Fave ever game on the NES)

ALL OF THE ABOVE... come highly recommended by me! Some of the other guys will probably agree with some of my choices too (some are obvious, like FFight, Streets of Rage & Guardian Heroe for example... they're all great!)

Honourable Mentions also go to:
Rival Turf (SNES) - absolute FFight rip-off, but great fun! A true Jaleco great!!
Batman Returns (SNES) basically a FFight - again - except with the main man, Batman!

If your a real SNK sicko, you're gonna have to download n burn all those homebrew Beats of Rage variations for DC... seriously, if you have the facilities, get on it... you'll have an absolute field day, especially with the amount of SNK mods that exist... ENJOY!

Thanks for the tip, even though i was looking for neo geo games i will try those games out as well, that "Beats of rage" is pretty cool.
4 words. STREETS OF RAGE II Grin
Mutation Nation never seems to get any love online. It's not too special, but it's certainly an enjoyable game. I will admit that I haven't revisited it lately, but I fed it a lot of quarters back when arcades existed in the midwest. It's also pretty affordable as well.
I find it strange that none of you mention BURNING FIGHT for the AES/MVS. SNKs own FINAL FIGHT clone.

Since there are so few scrolling beat´em ups for the AES/MVS this is the one to go for in my opinion.

SENGOKU 3 is also a good game but a bit more like SEGAS GOLDEN AXE.

The Neo Geo isn't really known for it's great Beat 'em Ups (I think most are boring and extremely dated), but there are a few:
- Burning Fight: Below average Final Fight clone that's pretty boring.
- Mutation Nation: Decent game.
- Ninja Combat: Average Beat 'em Up featuring Ninjas.
- Robo Army: Pretty good and quite an original game (as far as Beat 'em Ups can be).
- Sengoku: Most dated and boring of the series
- Sengoku 2: Quite enjoyable game and a big improvement on the first game.
- Sengoku 3: Best Beat 'em Up un the Neo Geo and a truly great game.
The reviews on this site for these games are very accurate (for me at least).

Good Beat 'em Ups for other systems:

- Bare Knuckle: Ikari no Tekken (Streets of Rage): A bit dated but still a lot of fun.
- Bare Knuckle II: Shitou no Chinkon Uta (Streets of Rage 2): One of the best Beat 'em Ups ever!!!
- Golden Axe: Good but dated fantasy themed game.

- Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (River City Ransom): Nice 8-bit comical game...also released on the PC Engine.
- Double Dragon II: I prefer this version over the original arcade version.

- Alien vs. Predator: Truly awesome game in which you can choose between Predators and Space Marines and beat the crap out of the Aliens.
- Powered Gear: Great game in which you control big robots that can use parts of fallen enemies.
- Dungeons & Dragons (both games): Best fantasy themed Beat ' em Ups ever, lots of alternative routes to choose from.
- Night Slashers: Gory, horror themed game.
- The Final Fight (the whole series): Nuff said.
- Demolish Fist: Underrated game that not many people have played (Atomiswave exclusive). Yes it has bad voice acting (gotta love it), cut scenes have crappy 3D graphics, but the ingame graphics are pretty good. Also there's lots of variation between stages and enemies (Bosses are just plain weird).

I know there are many other great games, but these are some of my favorites.
My arcade stuff

Regarding Burning Fight well I've got to admit I've never liked this game. It just feels to me like an inferior version of Final Fight. I'm glad Priest that you and other people can get enjoyment from the game though. I do see your point about comparing Sengoku 3 to Golden Axe but Sengoku 3 does feature punches in addition to slashing your sword.

I pretty much agree with Cthulhu's assessment of the Neo Geo's beat 'em ups. I think Ninja Combat is easily the worst game of this genre on Neo Geo. Although I love ADK this wasn't exactly their finest hour was it?

Like others have said Capcom's side scrollers are superb. I think though that if we are going to include hack and slash games like the D&D games then we should also mention Knights of the Round and The King of Dragons which are my all-time favourite games by Capcom.

The Streets of Rage games are of course brilliant especially Streets of Rage 2. It's good to see Double Dragon 2 on the Nes being mentioned too. In the past I used to play a lot of Nes games in 2 player mode and that was always the game we played the most.

I just want to mention Denjin Makai II (Guardians) which is an arcade game by Banpresto from 1995. If you've never tried this then please give it a go on Mame. You have eight very different characters to choose from each with multiple special moves and a super. There is also a combo meter and its possible to pull off very impressive combos. There's a video on Youtube of someone pulling off a 100 hit combo! The graphics and music are excellent and throughout the game you have a choice of different routes. I think this game is comparable in quality to Capcom's side scrollers.

Burning Fight - Quite exciting but it would say it lasts very long so try to get it for cheap.
Sengoku 3 - Excellent graphics in game and good variety of fighters.

Alien Vs. Predator - A lot of vicious combat with both humans and predators.
Final Fight - I think this version is better than the SNES version due to certain features the SNES version lacks.
The Punisher - Many bonus items, weapons and hostages to rescue.
Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom - Great RPG fighter with many creatures, treasure and encounters.
Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara - Hungry for more adventure? Give this sequel a go!
Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon - Try it out, only if you're into this, but graphcis are brilliant.
P.O.W. Prisoners of War - Still enjoyable for an old SNK game with four stages.

Sega Genesis:
Streets of Rage - This game is quite action packed. The other two games I find a bit short and the SMS versions are not worth.

Captain Commando - This one's worth a try.
Final Fight 3 - This has a few paths and alternative endings.

My all time favourites are Streets of Rage 1, both D&D games and Final Fight 3. There are lots of Beat em ups to enjoy.Blue Mary
I'm not much of an expert on Neo Geo beat 'em ups but I like the idea of listing my favourites from other systems - so I thought I'd join in Grin

1. Final Fight (Super Famicom)
2. Double Dragon (Arcade)
3. Renegade (Spectrum) - the arcade is probably better
4. Batman Returns (Super Famicom)
5. Target Renegade (Spectrum)

Sorry about including Spectrum games but I really loved those games esp Renegade - I loved taking on a whole gang at once.

Best 3D beat-em-up - Godhand (PS2)- an amazingly good game! - lots of room for skill too! Love that you can build your tension guage by collecting porno mags too Smile

I did have the first version of Beats Of Rage but there were too few moves for it to be in any way interesting. I think you need lots of moves in a beat-em-up because otherwise it gets boring. They might have improved this in later versions. It reminded me of Final Fight - but not as good.

Burning Fight is good beat em up game. I played a bit last night on the SNK classic vol.1 collection for the ps2.
Rival Turf on the SNES!!

Nah i'm kidding, that game is a really lame Streets Of Rage clone, but i remember enjoying it as a kid on the SNES.
How come Tekken Force is always rubbish? You'd think they could make it great considering how great the standard fighting engine is, but they just seem to put no effort into making it work. That beach ball game in Tekken 3 is much better!

On the neo, there isn't really a sidescrolling beat 'em up that can match with Capcom's or Konami's games. I like Burning Fight and Sengoku 2 and 3 quite a bit, but that's mainly because i have a big SNK heart i think. Robo Army is nice too, but you will not quickly play it again if you have finished it once i guess. It's a shame SNK never got it right on the sidescroller genre, but if you want some real good arcade sidescrolling beat'em ups, these are defenitely worth it:

1- Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (CAPCOM) --> greates of all time sidescroller if you ask me: fast paced, great graphics and music, loads of weapons, variation and lots of blood and exploding bodies. Check it out, price of the CPS 1.5 is insane though.

2- Alien vs Predator (CAPCOM) --> Still popular in the Japanese arcades today, so you can figure out how good it is. Worth buying on CPS2 if you have a cab or supergun.

3- Punisher (CAPCOM) --> Also great, but a little short. Awesome Capcom graphics and music and also lots of weapons. Price of the CPS 1.5 is crazy as Cadillacs.

4- Final Fight (CAPCOM) --> The king of all sidescrollers of course. A little slow if you are used to be able to dash as in the newer Capcom sidescrollers, but otherwise it's still a gem. A must have for any fan of the genre, the pcb is not that expensive.

5- X-men (KONAMI) --> A different style, but i have great memories about the 4 player cabs of this game. Pretty affordable, but you have to dig it.

6- Captain Commando (CAPCOM) --> Pretty great game, as said before.

And a whole other bunch of stuff from Capcom, but those games don't really do it for me (fa: Knights of the round, King of dragons, D&D).

I guess a lot of people will tell you Sengoku 3 is awesome, but i think it's too slow and gets boring really fast. The enemies need far too many hits, and there are too many of them appearing after each other in one screen. The combo system is pretty cool, graphics are great, but still the game doesn't do it for me. Sengoku 2 is better in my opinion, very oldschool with a great Japanese atmosphere, variation in the theme and weird story. You should check those two.
Final fight is the best ever scrolling beat 'em up I'd reckon. The best I've played on the Neo - probably burning fight.

Has anyone here reached Edi.e on the arcade final fight on one credit? I do declare myself the best cody player I've ever seen...
Being a Streets of Rage fan it's difficult for me to see why anyone would ever think Final Fight is better. It's not a bad series, but it's just completely outclassed by SoR.

I highly recommend The Crystal of Kings. It's by BrezzaSoft, a company which was formed by Ex-SNK employees in 2000 (who were later rehired once Playmore bought SNK). In other words, the designers behind Metal Slug 3 created a beat 'em up, and it is awesome.

Also I just started playing the Knights of Valour games but they seem to be really good. IGS makes some great games.
Wild Tengu
There's a beat'em up MMO called Dungeon Fighter Online, and it is apparently gonna get a localized english release pretty soon.

The Crystal of Kings is a really excellent game with nice graphics and music. The bosses are really impressive too in particular the Serpent at the end of stage 2.

On the subject of IGS I've been playing one of their side scrollers tonight: Oriental Legend (1997). I'd never actually heard of this before but it plays great. The graphics are quite cartoony with some imaginative bosses for example a giant rat. It seems IGS also made a sequel which came out in 2007 and from the videos I've seen it looks pretty impressive. I definitely recommend people to try Oriental Legend if they haven't already given it a go.
