My Mission to Watch Every Video Game Film Ever!
merlin
I'm not really sure if Tron counts or not but I suppose you could put it in a seperate category.

Thanks for the informative review RiKo. Doom doesn't sound too bad from your description and if it comes on TV at some point I'll probably give it a try. I just watched a few clips on youtube. This may be hard to believe for some people but I've never actually played any of the Doom games! I really should give them a try one day probably Doom 3 on the PC.

I've just played on Doom round other people's houses, so I haven't really delved too deeply myself. I do have Doom 3 on Xbox but I haven't played it. I always have such good intentions when I buy games - but just not enough time!

I will probably make a seperate category BTW Do I have to watch the Pokemon films? Smile

Resident Evil Extinction (2007)

This is the third and currently the most recent RE film. The story : The T-Virus infection has escaped Racoon city and is now quickly spreading all round the world. Alice (Milla Jovovich complete with new telekinetic powers), is alone in the desert in West USA, surviving as best she can. She meets up with Claire Redfield's (Ali Larter) convoy of survivors. Alice has found a book that suggests that Alaska is free from infection, and so the convoy sets off for Alaska. But first they need fuel - from the now deserted city of Las Vegas, which is slowly being reclaimed by the desert.....

After quite enjoying RE :Apocalpse this film was a bit of a disappointment. It has a slightly more laid back feel, and just doesn't feel as exciting in general as RE:AP. There is a nice homage to Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds when thousands of T-Virus infected crows attack the convoy, but in general it fails to excite in any great order. For some reason this film reminded me a bit of Day of the Dead (the third in the living dead series). It too had a similiar slightly strange laid back feel and in this film also, the scientists are starting to try and 'train' the zombies.

Not much really happens in the film of major excitement. I was hoping the film would continue when the possibility of an army of Alice clones was brought up at the end, but this would probably be beyond the film's budget, since the special effect when there only 2 in shot didn't look that convincing.

I give this film 4/10 It was ok, but a bit of a disappointment, and dull in places. I actually prefered Bloodrayne 2 to this.

Thanks for the review RiKo. It doesn't exactly sound amazing. I can remember watching a Resident Evil film before I think it was the first one and I quite enjoyed that.

I found out that the whole of Resident Evil Extinction is on youtube (complete with Hebrew subtitles!) so in the next few days I'll watch it and report back. Here's a link for part 1:

Thanks for the job you are putting in watching and reviewing these films, RiKo. But stay away from Pokemon, this is so bad it may actually hurt your eyesWink

Merlin: Thats a great link, thanks. I think I will watch this too, I also found the first RE film quite enjoyable.

The RE films are quite an enjoyable marathon. Somehow the plot really managed to stand alone by itself even if the main protagonist is an original character. Taking characters from the games is also quite a good move though they did not really follow how and what really happened to them in the games.

Thanks Priest. I am worried about Pokemon messing with my mind!

I like RE : Apocalypse quite a lot. I did start to watch the first film ages (years) ago, but I was a bit down on game movies at the time, and stopped watching when she started doing kung-fu - just cos she didn't in the game. lol. I am not such an arse any more.

I am going to watch the first film soon though, I like that they have just taken the game series as inspiration rather than making a direct translation.

Merlin - you can't watch films on YouTube surely! doesn't it spoil them a bit? Having said that maybe you will find out the hebrew for 'zombie' Smile

It's pretty cool watching a film all the way through on youtube. I set it to full screen. It's not something I'd want to do with really good films but for these video game films that I wouldn't want to buy on dvd it's fine.

Lol maybe finding out the hebrew for 'Zombie' might come in handy one day! Grin

Yeah, I agree with you there, though I actually see the resident evil movies as being their own thing rather than as video game movies. It took elements from the games of course but did their own thing with them, creating a story which thankfully wasn't a re-telling of the games.

Imagine a movie with Resi 1's dialogue. I think "Jill Sandwich" would kill anyone's career lol.

As for the Pokemon movie thing, see them as a spinoff from teh cartoon series instead of the games, then you won't have to have your eyes bleed. I remember seeing a website demonstration of the infamous "flashing" episode that caused so many seisures. Although the demonstration was played at a much slower rate, the impression I got was that the actual episode would've given me at least one type of long-term heath problem, like my eyes trying to escape my head or something.

What's next in the movie-o-game-a-thon?

Now I *AM* scared of Pokemon! Smile I have always suspected Pokemon could damage your health.

lol "Jill Sandwich" I have heard about this Grin One of my friends (who isn't that into games) was telling me that him and a friend were playing Silent Hill or a Resi Evil game and they found a 'Plate of Cat' and they both thought it was hilarious - like the designers of the game had just made a random name up.

Next? Either Tomb Raider (I need to watch it again so I can review it), or Uwe Boll's 'Dungeon Siege' with jason Statham - lol Jason Stratham is in all the best films! Smile

Tomb Raider

I saw this film way back (but not in the cinema) and thought it was pretty good. This time round it didn't seem so great but that could be because I have seen it before, or maybe just that I have more taste now! It has a fairly strong cast with Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, Jon Voight cleverly cast as her in film father - Richard Croft, and Daniel Craig (his American accent wasn't very convinicing) as Alex West - a rival Tomb Raider. I think Jolie makes a good Croft, though perhaps there are too many steely intense smirky looks. She also looks suprising like the VG Croft of the time - incredibly thin (not necessarily a good thing) with large sticky-out breasts.

The Story : An evil organistation called The Illuminati are trying to gain control of time itself by obtaining a long hidden mystical artifact called The Traingle Of Light. Lara must find the artifact before they do, and er thats it really. But on the way she must raid tombs and battle re-animated monsters all in exotic locations of course. It was a bit disappointing she doesn't shoot any dogs though or tigers.

This feels like it may have been made on a lowish budget, and some of the scenes have a slightly rough look to them. I have actually heard that it is the biggest grossing film ever for a film with a female lead character, so it must have turned a healthy profit. Surprisingly there isn't a huge amount of action in the film, but you don't really notice and its good that the other scenes work fairly well, and there is some humour in the film too . There is also an effort made to establish Lara as more than a one-dimensional character by probing a bit into her back story. Overall the film just seems Ok though - nothing exceptional comes to mind - with Jolie standing out as the main reason to watch the film

I didn't think the ending was rubbish this time round, seemed to work ok. I know some people who hate the ending though. I give it 6/10

yeah, i remember being like "oh wow Mario 3 looks like tha best game evaar!" but then again, I was about 8, impressionable and stupid lol

It was product placement to the extreme, if not with Mario 3 then with the power glove thing. There was an amusing Angry Video Game Nerd Episode about the game and the Wizard, especially with the dark inspiration behind the game lol

not really work/school safe, as the nerd loves to cuss

Oh, and as for the Super Mario Bros movie I guess that's another videogame/movie "classic" that you'll have to endure Riko*.

I saw the bit that Priest posted of The Wizard as well. I would have loved that when I was young. I think that playing with a Powerglove would actually be a handicap though.
lol I love it when people in films play games and have to wiggle the pad all over the place. (The best one is in Charlies Angels when 2 kids are having a 'fight' on Final Fantasy). I always think SMB3 is a bit cheeky because it used an extra chip in the cart, but it is a good game.

This video is kinda fun, where some guys from College Humor take a look of some of our most fond* videogame-movies from the 1990s.

*Obviously this is used sarcastically. These flicks actually made me a little ashamed to be a gamer lol

All the best for the Mario movie btw. You're a braver man than I.

That's a very funny video Phry! Grin

I have actually seen the Mario Bros film twice before, I watched it the 2nd time cos I didn't get it the first time - but it didn't help! For some reason it reminded me a bit of Brazil, I know some people love that film but I just thought it was a bit scummy, and I tried watching it again and still hated it. I can't remember but I thought Bob Hoskins played some kind of plumber in that too.

Its been a while since I saw Mario Bros - I honestly can't remember it apart from the dodgy outfits and the final battle with Bowser. So it will be 'intersting' to see it again.

Ok I finally got around to watching the whole of Resident Evil Extinction on Youtube. I wasn't really expecting that much from it but surprisingly found it really entertaining. So far I'd say it's the best video game film I've seen. I'm not saying it's one of the greatest films I've ever seen but I found it really entertaining throughout and never got bored. There are some tense and exciting moments my favourite being the attack of the mutant crows which like RiKo said reminds you of Hitchcock's 'The Birds'. The finale when Alice is battling the heavily mutated Dr. Isaac in an underground complex is pretty exciting. I like the whole 'Mad Max' type of atmosphere in the film. Overall I'm giving this film a score of 7 out of 10.

I've never actually watched the Mario Bothers film but I'd like to. It seems like one of these 'so bad that it's good' kind of films.

If any more video game films are on Youtube then I'll watch them and report back.

What film are you going to watch next RiKo?
