My Mission to Watch Every Video Game Film Ever!
RiKo
Run out of game films now:( I am trying to get the Bloodrayne films. I thought they would be 99p by now! but people are still buying them. In that article on Uwe Boll in GamesTM it said that the House of the Dead sold loads on DVD and indeed that most of the money is made on DVD sales.

This is a sticking point in my plan that I may actually have to spend some money buying VG films. lol

Ok so I got some more video game films to watch. Starting with another one from Mr Uwe Boll

Bloodrayne 2 : Deliverance

I have never seen BloodRayne 1, or actually played the game, so I can't comment on how close it is to the game. This film suprised me a bit because I was expecting Rayne (Natassia Malthe) to be totally kickass like Milla Jovovich in the RE films, but she is a lot more vunerable, and often gets hurt.

Really this is a Western - albeit one where the enemies are vampires. Rayne returns to her homestead to find the children gone and the adults murdered. All the children have been taken to the town of Deliverance where the vampire leader - an undead Billy the Kid (yes really!) is holding them. Sometimes he snacks on them, but they are mainly hostages. Anyway Rayne and (eventually) some friends set out to free the town of the vampire scourge.

Well no one can say this is a bad film (though they probably have! - I never check reviews) , because it isn't but then its not particularly good either.

There's nothing spectacular about it in terms of stunts or fights. I think this is mainly because its meant to be more like an old-style Western. Natassia Malthe is just ok as Rayne, she is moody and dark, although she does seem quite small, and she doesn't sizzle. To be fair she isn't really pushed in terms of acting ability - Rayne is a loner and has no real emotional involvement with anyone.

The film did keep my interest in parts and I like the main musical theme - even if it is a bit over played. Overall the pace feels a bit slow.

Definitely a 5/10 VG film (probably more a 4.9 though but I'm not giving decimal points any more!)

I hadn't looked properly looked at this thread before but it's certainly an interesting idea RiKo. Out of the films mentioned I've only ever seen a Resident Evil film which was fairly good I think. I've seen clips form Postal and it looks truly appalling. Definitely one to avoid. I think I'll give Bloodrayne 2 a miss somehow. It sounds really awful and having an undead Billy the Kid in the film is rather bizarre! The only film I want to see out of the ones mentioned is King of Kong. I really like the sound of it and because it's a true story that makes it a lot more appealing.

RiKo
lol. yes - but maybe that is the plot of the game. A lot of games do have some far-out plots. (hello Tekken, KOF et al) Yes I liked King of Kong, but didn't think it was as good as I had heard. hmm Postal is a strange one, it has good and bad moments. I like a lot of the ideas in it, but then a huge chunk of it isn't funny.

Silent Hill (2006)

This is more like it, some of you guys said this was worth watching - and it is.

The story : Rose (Radha Mitchell) and her husband (Sean Bean) are having trouble with their adopted daughter - who keeps sleep walking and then wakes screaming the name 'Silent Hill'. Out of desperation Rose takes her to the abandoned town of Silent Hill in West Virgina - long since abandoned because of a coal fire burning underneath it. Things go very very badly. She loses her daughter, and strange things begin to happen.... She
must uncover the terrible secret of what really happened in Silent Hill, if she is ever to find her daughter.

I have played some of the first game, and the film follows it quite closely. (the part I've played anyway). The main difference is that Harry has been replaced as the main protagonist by Rose (although maybe not - if she is in the other Silent Hill games - not sure) I didn't actually enjoy the film so much up to the point where I had reached in the game (quite near the start fortunately!), because I knew what was going to happen, and it removed some of the tension from the film.. Also the first baby 'monsters' to appear looked a bit too CGI rather than real.

However it did get better, and the tension keeps building. There is lots from the game here, and some of the camera angles as Rose explores the town, seem identical. Many of the monsters from the game series are also in the film - such as the nurses, baby things and pyramid head.

The best bits in the film are when the 'darkness' descends, and my favourite part was in the toilets when this happens. There is also a real sense of decay of a disturbed town, and the special effects are quite impressive overall.

My only real criticism of the film is that it is a 15. Sometimes the camera shies away from showing the true brutality of what Rose is seeing, and as a result the film isn't nearly as uncomfortable, repulsive or frightening as I wanted it to be. In fact I never really felt frightened, and I always felt that Rose would be ok, but there are some tense moments. Nice that they cast some good actors in this film too - makes a nice change. Good music too.

Overall though very good, and it gets a 8/10 - same as DOA, but it gets the 8/10 for being good.

I'd be interested to hear from people who have more experience of the game series what they think of this movie, and how similiar it is. Did you enjoy it? Does it take elements from the the other Silent Hill games too?

Feel free to criticize or discuss any of my reviews - they are just my opinion Smile

Actually, I just realized, I think the Mortal Kombat film is the only time in history where the film is better than the game it was based on! LOL
Without love, the truth cannot be seen.

reelmojo
I never realized that either but you're totally right! Actually Mortal Kombat's storyline has always been better than it's gameplay... except for maybe MK Shaolin Monks. I wish the entire series was like that game.

Apparently in the US version - they took all the blood out. In the German version they turned the blood green Smile

Double Dragon (1994)

This really is terrible. If this hadn't been a videogame film - I would have stopped watching after 10 minutes. You can tell from the awful opening fight scene that this film is going to be bad. The stroy : After the bad guy Koga Shuko (Robert Patrick) kills Satori (Billy and Jimmy's guardian) Billy (Scott Wolf) and Jimmy must protect their half of the Dragon medallion from him. The story doesn't really follow that of the game, although it features a lot of the characters. Marion (Alyssa Milano) is present but never gets kidnapped and is instead leader of the 'Power Core' gang. BoBo (I think the big guy who smashes through the wall in the arcade game) is a bio-enhanced freak with the strength of many men. Lash is the whip weilding female who is 2nd in command bad guy/girl.

This film reminds me a lot of the bad martial arts films Sky used to have on when I used to come back from the pub. I could watch them then because I was tired and a bit drunk. Watching this film made me wish I was drunk - preferably comotose.

The only thing that stops me giving this a 1/10 is the dumbass humour which is so dumbass that it does manage to raise a smile at times. For example when the bad guys throw a postman off the top of a building at Billy and Jimmy, after he hits the ground Billy says 'Man - I've never seen a postman move that fast before' Its also funny when Billy and Jimmy get their 'Double Dragon' oufits at the end - because they are meant to be cool - but instead just look embarassing! These are the same outfits they get in the Neo Geo game.

Something I noticed was that all the main good guy characters seem really short - maybe this is becasue they are meant to be teenagers? I'm not sure.

Kudos for getting a Double Dragon machine in the film - even if it does get smashed (probably half the budget went in that scene)

It seems Uwe Boll has really been spoiling us..........

Score 2/10 (worst film so far!)

Look forward to hearing other people's opinions on this film. Maybe someone liked it?

This video is a close approximation of the film

Glad I didn't watch that Double Dragon movie. Or am I? Hmm
I don't think Aliens Vs. Predator qualifies as a video game film though.

Nice review RiKo. Double Dragon does sound really appalling! I've never actually watched it myself but have heard a lot of bad things about this film which strangely makes me really keen to watch it. I get the impression it might be one of those films that is so bad that it's hilarious. If I understand this correctly the video footage at the start of Double Dragon on the Neo Geo is from this game.

hmm you are probably right Boogie. If other people agree I will remove it. Even though the game came before the films, it was a comic first.

Actually I might just stick it in its own section.

I think you are right Merlin, I think the game is based upon the film. I would be interested to hear what you think of it. It would be cool if other people want to post their reviews or even just review scores, so its not just me spouting off Smile

I think the case is that both halves are, on their own, movie licenses. But then again, as a counterargument to myself, if they ever made a Marvel Vs. Capcom movie, I'd probably consider it a video game movie. Or maybe half a video game movie? I dunno... Shrug

I just finished watching the whole of the Double Dragon film on youtube. Here's a link if anyone's interested:

http://www.youtub...B63ED980AF

There's no doubt it's a cheesy, crappy movie with very lame attempts at humour. Overall I think 2/10 is about right for the film. Having said all that bad as the film is I did kind of enjoy it because you have to laugh at how bad it is. The cheesy dialogue and bad acting is really funny. I liked the scene about two thirds of the way through when they are fighting all those gang members. Also the Abobo character is quite amusing. For anyone who hasn't already seen the film I'd recommend taking a look. Sometimes it's nice to watch something a bit crappy.

A film I've never seen but think would be quite amusing is 'The Wizard'. I guess it probably wouldn't count for this thread because it's not about one particular game. This scene is a classic:

Interesting to hear your views on Double Drago Merlin. I know the bit you mean where they fight the gang Smile

Maybe that film does count as a videogame film - I have heard of it but never seen it. I think they may have used some of it for a commercial for the NES. Lucas Barton is sooo cool - he has all 97 games and a Powerglove OMG! Shock

Do you remember Last Starfighter where the arcade machine is actually really a device to find a pilot good enough to defeat the bad alien guys? lol - used to love that film.

Lucas Barton is cool because he has 97 Nes carts and a Powerglove! I like it when he says 'I love the Powerglove... it's sooo bad!'

I've never actually heard of the Last Starfighter before. I might check it out in the future.

I might try and watch a few more video game movies but because they often tend to be quite bad I wouldn't want to actually buy any of them except possibly The King of Kong.

RiKo
I have had to buy some on DVD to make this thread I am afraid. Most expensive was actually Double Dragon! - least I can sell it though.

I am enjoying watching VG films - good fun! I do watch other films inbetween though - makes for a nice break.

Last Starfighter was a classic from my youth! There was another film called DARYL where this kid was kind of a robot and totally destroyed Pole Position - he was so good at it. Also there was another film with a little kid who played video games, I think there were gangs on roller skates in it - I can't remmeber the name now. Do you think Tron counts as a VG film - maybe these films should have their own category?

DOOM (2005)

Story : A portal that links Earth to Mars has been discovered (does it sound like Stargate yet?) - called The Ark. Scientists and archieologists are working on Mars doing their thing when suddenly they are attacked by something - an unknown enemy/threat, and many are killed. Serge (The Rock) and his crack team of soldiers are sent in to identify and contain the threat.

To do this they first have to travel through The Ark - which is the weirdest portal ever. They each kind of get sucked up by this central core and then spat out at the other end (where they prompty vomit). I'm sure this has been done on purpose in a desperate attempt to not make it seem anything like the one in Stargate.

I liked this film at the start. There is some good banter between the soldiers and the acting is actually lot better than that between the space marines in Aliens (which has a similiar scenario - one of my fav films). There is some good tension building as the soldiers start to encounter signs of trouble. However the monsters when they come aren't very impressive or scary and just turn out to be no more than mutated zombies. I am not an expert on Doom but I have played it and I thought there was meant to be a gate to hell - through which demons pour forth. This is not nearly as frightening and seems to be only mild Doom.

I do get the impression that maybe this film is based on the third game a lot with a couple of flashlight in-jokes (yes they are attached to the gun, but not so useful when they fail), and I recognised some of the monsters. I haven't played Doom 3 (although I have seen a lot of it) so maybe I am doing the film a diservice - maybe it follows the plot of this game.

UK viewers will be amused at the inclusion of Dexter Fletcher (Pressgang and Gamesmaster). There is a also a nice first-person section - just like the game towards the end of the film seen through the eyes of Reaper (Karl Urban) - one of the main soldier characters. I liked this sequence but I wonder what people who hadn't seen the game would think of it. Reaper and his sister are probably the best 2 things about this movie, and provide what emotional depth there is (not much)

I didn't really think the 2nd part of the film was as strong as the first (anti-climax), and there is a bit of a rubbish fight between 2 of the main characters at the end of the film - which is overcooked

Worth watching but not great. I give it 6/10 for now. I think I might rejig some of my scores soon, because I have a lot on 5 and I think Hitman was probably as good if not better than Doom.
