My Mission to Watch Every Video Game Film Ever!
RiKo
Hi Merlin sorry i didnt see your post before! yes that 100 yen film looks good and so does the High Score one, though it seems quite similiar to King of Kong. I know on Missile command they have Tournament settings that you set so you dont get given extra cities, because otherwise that's bascially a game you can play forever (if you are a top player) - its more a test of stamina and how long you can stay awake!

that guy is obviously going for the marathon record. i cant even imagine how hard that must be. I am someone who cannot go without sleep even for one night lol.

Far Cry (Uwe Boll) 2008

The plot : a boat guide Jack Carver (Til Schweiger) is caught up on an island where they are performing genetic experiments on soldiers in order to create super-soldiers.

This is the first video game film i have seeen for a while and i have to say expectation was not great. I have played Far Cry : Instincts on Xbox (but not the original PC game) and did quite enjoy what i played of it. Really this just seems like a standard late-night action film, with a hero who overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to win the day. There is some humour in the film which is good but some of the acting seems a bit 'off' in places which made me wonder if some of the Americans are being voiced by European actors. The plot is very hackneyed but i guess it was the plot of the original game. it does make you wonder why on earth films are taking videogame plots !? It's watchable because of the action sequences and you want to see what happens next, but its not a particularly good film

3/10 just your average videogame film (but in real film terms that means it's worse than average)

Good idea bumping this thread RiKo. I'm still really looking forward to that 100 Yen film. I'll definitely buy this on dvd when it's released. They've released a few more trailers:

Nice review RiKo. Never actually knew there was a Far Cry film. Sounds far from amazing judging from your review but I'd still like to check this out seeing as I'm a big fan of Far Cry. It was my first ever FPS game (PC version) and I still enjoy playing it. Has much higher replay value than the sequel I think. Wouldn't want to actually buy this film though but I'm sure someone will upload it onto Youtube eventually.

I'm looking forward to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. TV series that's coming out.

Thanks to the spammer for reminding me about this thread. I recently came across this:

YouTube Video

That's a straight to video, Japanese only Last Bronx movie! Apparently Sega released this in 1997 and quickly forgot about it. I have no idea why they funded a movie based on Last Bronx instead of Virtua Fighter or even Fighting Vipers. Don't get me wrong, I love Last Bronx, but it wasn't as popular as VF or FV. It's in Japanese and there are no subtitles so not knowing what's going on might actually make it more enjoyable than the King of Fighters movie! It was the directorial debut of Takashi Shimizu who went on to make the Ju-on series (including The Grudge).

haha cool, i like that very stylised punch under the jaw that lifted her off the ground. and then when he gets knocked down after that he sommersaults himself over the barrier lol

i agree that that film looks really interesting. Even just to see the inside of a modern Japanese arcade is interesting to me. Do you know when it's coming out?

I think you are missing a few. Are you just watching movies that are adaptations of video games? Or movies about games in general. If so, you should check out Frag, Focus, King of Kong, and of course, the best video game movie EVEEEER! The Wizard! Duh! lol

I'm pretty much planning to watch everything related to videogames eventually. I have already reviewed the King Of Kong. It's a really good film. Anyone else is welcome to add their mini-reviews too - these are just my opinions so its always nice to get other people's views too.

i do know of the Wizard so yes i plan to watch that, but the others i have to add to my list - i dont know those ones Thanks for the ideas Slutty Thumbs Up

I will probably review the scores i gave to the films soon just to get them into more of a correct order now i have reviewed quite a few.

Those other two are documentaries. I have only watched Frag. I saw it the first time at Quakecon 08 when they premiered it. It is about the pro gaming industry. After that you could only buy it for a few months and they have not made any more since then, but you can find it online. The reason I like that movie is because I know most the people in it from Quakecon. I have even partied and gotten drunk with some of them. lol. As for Focus. It revolves around a single pro gamer who specializes in fighting games.

You must be very good at Quake - even when drunk lol. Which Quake game do most people mainly play there? I used to really like Quake 3 Online on Dreamcast but i am just a normal player. Did you like Quake 4?

I have to say those names Frag + Focus describe the films very well. I will definitely watch those.

The 100 Yen film is coming out in November this year RiKo. You can already pre-order the dvd on their website.

Thanks Merlin, i have ordered it now. It's quite expensive though - it was $40 inc postage. Hope it's good Smile

Cool. Hope you enjoy the film RiKo. Yes $40 is expensive but judging from the trailers I think it will be good. I'll pre-order a copy myself very soon.

RiKo
oh what happened to that film, i totally forgot i even ordered it until now. I dont think i ever got it?? must check on that.

Yay finally watched another video game film

Prince of Persia : The Sands of Time (2010)

Ok Plot summary : Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) has to protect the Dagger of Time, which has the power to turn back time. The evil guy wants it so he can turn back time and become king.

Well this is quite good actually. It works as a film even if you know nothing about the videogame. It's just a good adventure in a similar kind of style to indiana Jones. I think the time rewinding aspect really adds to it in places, and it's pretty cool the beginning of the film is also the end - just like the game.

Bad Points : the casting! - Jake Gyllenhaal sometimes comes across as being a bit lightweight and 'floppy' in his role as the Prince - instead of a rogue, this works in his favour at times giving him an emotional depth he might not otherwise have but at other times makes him seem a bit limp-wristed and weak. Gemma Arterton - admittedly looks good in stills from the film but is she really that beautiful? The princess of Alamut is meant to be a 'legendary' beauty.

Some of the set pieces on the Princes' journey aren't as spectactular or memorable as you hope, but in general it is a good adventure film, of a much higher standard than most of the video game films i have watched.

I will give it 7/10 probably as good as if quite different from Silent Hill, but worse than King of Kong. (yeah i know might have to adjust my marking on previous games)

7/10

Interesting stuff here, im going to have to read through this thread.

Far Cry sadly fits in with the standard fate of game based movies. Its easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen with shockingly poor CG. It gets played on SYFI [ or whatever its called now Shock ] once in a while. I wouldn't pay money to see it again as its not even remotely good in a bad way.

It makes House of the Dead look like a 5 star movie Pfft

I spent most of the eighties, most of my life, riding around in somebody else's car, in possession of, or ingested of, something illegal, on my way from something illegal to something illegal with many illegal things happening all around me.

Is it worse than Doom Shock

candycab
To date Far Cry is about the worst movie I think I have seen in the last several years game related or otherwise. Doom is astoundingly better than Far Cry. lol ... I have seen Wesley Snipes & Steven Segal straight to video movies that were fantastic in comparison to Far Cry.

I actually like Doom and while isn't anything particularly special, other than the lame 1st person bs I think it was well done and certainly rivals many other attempts at SCi-Fi flicks made in the last dozen years or so.

Not a huge Dwayne Johnson fan but I think he fit the role well and Karl Urban was good too. Never noticed he was in Chronicles of Riddick until recently now I notice he has been in a few things I have seen and hes actually been good in all of it. It always amazes me when an actor can completely loose his natural accent for a film then you seen them do an interview and hear their true voice. It never donned on me until recently that most with that ability are very good actors.

I thought Gamer was kind of cool since it was pretty original and done about as well as that could have been done on any budget. Wanna watch a bad in a good sort of way game themed movie checkout Gamebox 1.0

Most would probably scoff at its lack of budget but there is something there that is intriguing if you like no budget stuff.

yes Doom wasn't bad compared to a lot of the films i saw. i think i gave it 6/10 - above average. I think maybe people went to see it at the cinema and got disappointed. whereas you would never go to see stuff like Far Cry or Dungeon Siege at the cinema. well i hope not anyway!

oh you reminded me, i watched Gamer recently but i don't think i have reviewed it? i actually thought it was going to be crap at first but it was ok by the end. will write a review soon...

CandyCab wrote :- Most would probably scoff at its lack of budget

yes Gamebox is not exactly the Matrix lol. i will def have to watch that at some point though. Not a big fan of low budget stuff tbh, but if its video game related i have no choice! it might surprise me Smile

btw reading the beginning of this thread again, its amazing how more enthusiastic i was at the start! I like this quote about the movie Postal. i forgot about the wheelchair guy!

My favourite part of this film is the black police officer who keeps a retarded wheel-chair bound guy in his garage. He takes him out in the day and just leaves him somewhere in the city, and then at the end of the day collects him and takes all the money he has got from sympathetic passers-by.

I did actually made a video for Postal if anyone wants to see it, it has the distinction of being banned in Germany. No wheelchair guy unfortunately but it does feature Uwe Boll being shot in the groin. (DON'T WATCH IF UNDER 18!!!!! and don't watch the film whatever age you are! )

Just wanted to add my 2 cents around here. Smile

I recently watched the infamous King of Fighters Live Action movie - and now that's a really tragic story. Quite the worst video game movie I've ever watched (yes, even 'Street Fighter' starring the Muscles from Brussels was way better than this).

The following (arranged) scenes should illustrate it more than precisely.

And as a player of Postal 2 I quite enjoyed the movie, despite the fact that Uwe Boll isn't exactly known for excellent films. Some details like the Cat silencer or characters like Krotchy the mascot or Gary Coleman are quite faithful to the actual game. But it's still a sick movie! Grin

Hahahahahaha okay okay Doom may not have been all that bad overall I guess the first person sequence just got to me too much LOL now...the King of Fighters live action I have actually neglected to watch cause I fear it to be way too painful hahahahaha! I don't know though it may be sort of like Street Fighter so bad that you just cannot NOT watch. I have heard the most recent Prince of Persia movie is also quite horrible. I would like to be the judge of that but it can go one of two ways....they mess it up so bad it's hilarious or they mess it up so bad it angers you :(

I found the Price of Persia story line pretty lame and just couldn't get into 1 or 2 but I gave them look anyway. Good production values on both movies though. Many moons ago I never cared much for the original C64 game as it was rather dull, fast forward to this era and not surprisingly I don't care for the newer games either.

Off the movie topic for second here

If I cant get into the story line in a game I usually wont bother with them unless you can do dumb crap like a GTA game or slaughter large numbers of bad guys like God of War. From a story line perspective GOW and Uncharted are nothing special and way way over hyped in their game play. Great looking sure but still just the standard linear run and gun from start to finish that gets really boring quickly if you don't give a hoot about the story Smile

Over hype ruined both games in a way since I was tired of seeing and hearing about them for months on end which sucked the excitement right out of them on launch day. I guess the silver lining was that I didn't care about waiting for both to get a huge price drop before buying them Grin
