Pseudo-shooters

Also thought I would kick this one off so that members can advise on games for shmup fans to play when they have exhausted their traditional shmup collection. I don't mean FPS shooters but games that are at heart horizontal or vertical shoot-em-ups but aren't advertised as such. For example, Eightman is like a fast horizontal shooter, whilst Shock Troopers is really a vertical shooter. I've always thought it strange that often a game will be ignored as a shooter if the character is a person and not a space ship (notable exceptions being Gunbird and Castle Shikigami.
Go forward for make away as joystick. Push A button for approach of enemy. Break of enemy for A and B. Make high score for break get together - Neo Mr Do!

Don't know if it really fits your description, but the finest example I can think of is Guwange. This game is my most favorite shmup ever (yes, of course it's a Cave game). Why? At heart it's a Danmaku shmup, but the biggest difference is that the character you play is on foot and can run into obstacles which you can't shoot through, but with the help of your shikigami, you can hit enemies on higher ground and behind obstacles. This game looks like a shooter, but is in fact a shmup as the screen moves by itself like in a shmup whereas in shooter, the screen moves with the character and not automaticaly. So this game is really original in the shmup genre and together with the great amount for detail, great music and art direction makes this game truly a masterpiece.
The best way to play this game of course is to get the original PCB and play it on a cab...this easier said than done, because the game is pretty expensive and can be really hard to find. Great alternative is to download the ROM and play it through emulation (runs great in MAME).

I have a game on the Saturn called Kingdom Grandprix, which is a kind of a racer turned into a shooter. It is a Raizing game - so it has a good pedigree.

YouTube Video

Definitely a little different from the normal shooters.
*EDIT* - sorry I keep posting videos that don't allow embedding - you will have to click on the vid to watch on youtube

The Speed Rumbler is an excellent car shooter - but you may find it too much of a car game really. It also seems a bit clunky at first, but once you get into it - its is superb. Its on the 2nd Capcom Classics Collection on PS2/Xbox

You have good taste in games RiKo... I also have both those games.

I'm still not sure about K.Grandprix though. I prefer Mahou Daisakusen (the prequel) as it didn't have the weird racing element... Raizing is one of my FAVE developers, but that game is just odd IMO.

Heres some good, what I would class as pseudo shooters:

Contra: Shattered Soldier. Great game that is totally faithful to the contra lineage... and is arguably the best in the series... great graphics & great gameplay. Superb!

ANOTHER ONE: Bangaioh on DC is pretty f*ckin' amazing... kinda pseudo in my own mind. Pretty damn hard too, but plays wonderfully. Wow!

Umm... Wolf Fang SS on the Saturn is kinda pseudo-ish. You choose the parts for your robot fighter (arms, body, legs/wheels/boosters & weapons) and then take on the world. SERIOUSLY underrated and unheard of. Really cool game with an old school 16 bit feel. Fab! (YouTube vids DON'T do this game justice from what I've seen)
