cool game Ninja, i have heard of Senko Ronde but never seen it in action, it does look good. i will have to try demo now too. that game looks pretty good too Merlin, i always find i can tell how good game are by watching video. i think when u played lots of games u can tell, and pick up on things if they are done right. that looks good too 2D, i would like to try that out someday. i am still happy with Gradious V, Mars Matrix + Battle Garegga at moment Smile the holy trinity of shooting games Smile

Senko No Ronde DUO looks pretty good, I enjoyed the original on 360, the shooter meets fighting game was a neat idea and I'll check out DUO for sure.

I'd also recommend Raystorm HD and R-type on 360, both fun ways to kill time.

Wow theres a Raystorm HD? On a console I don't have... sigh.

Anyway Raystorm is good fun, but man its very very... linear. There isn't a lot of deviating from a very fixed strategy for scores. Granted the Ray games (and well, ALL Taito games) are all like this but eh.

I still love Taito Smile

YA KNOW...
I never ever really looked at it that way but, you know, you are totally correct! I never saw it before but the Ray games are really linear, and that's an odd thing to notice for a Shmup!

So yeah, I totally 'get' what your saying. I think also, without realising it, this may be the reason why, as much as I really like all of the Ray series (RayCrisis to a much lesser extent though) I don't REALLY love them! I dunno, but something has always held me back.

Layer Section is the best of the bunch imo whilst LSection2/RayStorm is an extremely admirable 3D effort! As for RayCrisis, I always found the gameplay to be horribly disjointed by the differing and somewhat short sections. It's alright though. Merlin'd love it Grin

I'm just liking Triggerheart Excelica more than any other shump (sometimes), although, the most dialog in a shump ever is probably Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings 2. Cause of Multiple Characters and their Endings.

I just found another great arcade shooter recently which I hadn't heard of before and I don't think anyone here has mentioned it. It's P-47 Aces a horizontally scrolling shooter from 1995 developed by NMK and published by Jaleco. NMK were also responsible for Zed Blade on the Neo Geo.

You have a choice of four different characters each with their own unique aircraft. It really is unbelievably difficult though with lots of enemies on screen and shots coming very fast towards you. One thing that's very unusual is that unlike most shooters when you collide with the ground instead of losing a life you actually score points! Repeatedly ramming the ground is actually a legitimate scoring tactic. There's also a glitch you can exploit to get temporarily trapped inside some of the bosses and score a large number of points that way.

This game is the sequel to P-47 The Phantom Fighter which I've not tried yet. Anyway I would highly recommend giving P-47 Aces a try if you haven't already done so. I'd say it's superior to Zed Blade.

Can anyone think of any 4P arcade, ship-style shooters (i.e., not walking around with guns)? I believe there aren't any... Hmm

Surely, there has to be an ultra obscure Japanese title from 199-something that allows four people to shoot the heck out of a big, ugly alien that has merged itself to the walls! Shock Wink I wonder why 4P ship-style shooting never took off.

P-47 looks bad-ass, Merlin! I'll play 2P on MAME if you want. Dont forget, you still gotta play Cybattler with me, buddy!

DUNNO...
what you mean exactly by 'Ship-Style', but hopefully your simply referring to Traditional Shmups (Vert or Horiz).

If this IS the case, the ONLY 4P vertical scroller that comes to mind (because I own it!) is GigaWing2 on the Dreamcast. I've played this with my friends in 4P simultaneous many a time... Great Fun!! Thumbs Up

(p.s. I know, I know... 'Shmups' is a horrible HORRIBLE word Shock )

I don't think there are any 4 player shoot 'em ups on Mame unfortunately Tobalman. I wasn't aware that Giga Wing 2 had a 4 player option. The only 4 player shoot 'em up I heard of was the Xbox Live shooter Aegis Wing. Would be pretty fun to play a shooter with 4 players although probably very confusing too.

RiKo P-47 Aces is excellent and I'm sure you would love it. I've never tried that P-47 Thunderbolt game you mentioned.

Sounds good 2D! I'd definitely like to play both of those online with you one day. I did try Cybattler recently and thought it was pretty good.

I've never been keen on the term 'shmup' and never use it. For me it's got be either shoot 'em up or shooter. Even worse though is saying 'BEU' instead of beat 'em up. Annoyed

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't have an XBox, so, oh well. The only arcade game that comes to mind off the top of my head is Captain America and the Avengers (sorta). This game is a hybrid that mixes beat 'em up elements with shoot 'em up elements. What you get are occasional horizontal shooter scenarios.

Fast forwrd to 6:48 to see what I mean. I believe every level has one.

*WARNING*WARNING*...
avoid like the plague! This game is terrible. I know. I have boxed copies of it for BOTH SNES & MD due to nostalgia! I used to play this as a kid and thought it was great, However, upon my more recent interactions, I can reliably report that it's not all that great tbh! However, if you're only emulating etc, then it can't hurt to give it a blast - you may even have fun with it!

AND...
was it an Arcade release?? If so, I didn't know that! Will have to look it up, as that may be an 'acceptable' version (i.e. framerate, playabilty, collision detection etc - just some of the things the console ports lack!!).

I can recommend Hellfire. Its a a very neat arcade game. I have been playing it alot on my cab and cant stop trying to better my score. Shmups are my favorite genre. Shienryu is also getting alot of love at the moment. Along with Tecmo World Cup 98, my ST-V mobo is getting alot of usage. Check out my youtube video for

Just tried out DeathSmiles (in both Arcade/Console Format) at AX (Anime Expo) 2010, and trust me, its ridiculous, MBL's (Mega Black Label's) Level 999 is Atrocious and would really credit feed quarters if this upgrade was on Arcade, also at least played Triggerheart Excelica, and other stuff too.

Whoa. Agreed. That 4P 2-D shooter looks epic... I wonder if it will eventually be offered as a download (aw, who am I fooling, it probably will, eventually). Good find dude! Smile
