Shoot-em-up thread

Thought I'd set this up to see if there is any interest for it. There are many shmup related threads on the site, dealing with specific games, but they all tend to end up as a thread for shmups in general. Which is great as the genre appears to be very popular on the Neo Geo and every other console. So, if you agree, let's post our views and recommendations here. I'll start off with three for the humble DS that are absolutely amazing for a handheld and these are Nanostray, Nanostray 2 and the sublime Ketsui (arcade conversion by Cave) that comes in a great little box-set with a "how to play" DVD. It' tag-line is "Dead or Dream".
Go forward for make away as joystick. Push A button for approach of enemy. Break of enemy for A and B. Make high score for break get together - Neo Mr Do!

I also bought the Ketsui DS and its nice package. Really worth the money although I didn't play very much yet (lack of time with all these games Pfft ). All the shoot em up fans must get this one. And the extra dvd is disgusting (in the good way ^^).

Well, basically any Cave game (no surprise here) but you have to like Danmaku shmups (dodging rediculous amount of bullets in sometimes almost psychedelic patterns). Most of their games might be really difficult at first, but if you practice a lot you'll definitely get better at them (even me). Also great is that some games are/ were released on consoles, which is alway a nice alternative to the really expensive PCB kits I buy...still think it's worth it though. Unfortunately for most people some of their games weren't (or aren't yet) released on consoles (Muchi Muchi Pork!, Espgaluda II, Mushihime Sama Futari, Pink Sweets: Ibara Sorekara and Dodonpachi Dai Fukkatsu), fortunately some are emulated (Guwange, ESP Ra.De., Dangun Feveron and Progear).
I also like other shmups than the Cave ones, but I've become a bit of a Cave fan and am striving to get as many of them in their original PCB format.

CHEERS FOR THE SHOOT 'EM UP THREAD KURISU Thumbs Up

Shoot em ups vie for my favourite genre of game alongside fighting games. To be more specific, my TWO favourite genres in the whole world (infantile terminology, maybe? FACTUAL information? DEFINITELY!) are:

2D Fighting games followed closely by 3D Fighting games
&...
Vertical, Horizontal & Run 'n' Gun Shoot 'em ups! (2D or 3D)

THESE ARE THE GAMES I own the most of, as these are the games I love most. I feel the two genres complement each other wonderfully as I feel the same nature of skill is required for both types of games... I could go in to a big essay here, BUT, I won't as I feel very passionate about ALL Fighters & Shmups... so I'd be here for some time!

Anyway, as for recommendations etc... I'll just list MY favourites for each machine that I own Shmups for... just to give you an idea of what I'm into:

(p.s. I won't elaborate on them, as hopefully, if you're here, you should know why I THINK these games are good)

NES: SectionZ / Turrican (I won few shmups for NES, but these 2 are great!)

MD: FAVE - Grind Stormer & Truxton

Honourable Mentions: Aero Blasters, ThunderForce3 / Probotector H.Corps, Mega Turrican

SNES: FAVE - UN Squadron & Super Aleste

Honourable Mentions: S.R-Type, R-Type3, Super SWIV / Starwing, S.Probotector, Turrican 2, Smash TV & Total Carnage, Alien 3, Desert Strike (SNES ver. better than MD ver.)

PSOne: FAVE - ZanacXZanac & Gradius Gaiden

Honourable Mentions: Einhander, R-Type Delta & Raiden 1,2 & DX, Raystorm, Donpachi & DoDonpachi (better than SAT vers.) / Tempest X3, Rapid Reload &... Heart of Darkness (3rd in the series after Another World & Flashback IMO - same team)

Saturn: FAVE - Battle Garegga & Batsugun

Honourable Mentions: Soukyugurentai, KyoKyuKu Tiger 2+, ShienRyu, Strikers 1&2, Layer Section, Blast Wind, Hyper Duel, ThunderForce V/ Elevator Action Returns < AMAZING game (run 'n' gun-esque!) OH... and Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2 are AWESOME too!

DC: FAVE - MarsMatrix & ChaosField

Honourable Mentions: GigaWing1&2, Ikaruga, ZeroGunner2, Psyvariar2, GunBird2, UnderDefeat, Trizeal, BorderDown (DAMN! basically all the Shmups on DC!)

PS2 - FAVE - Mushihemesama & Gradius V

Honourable Mentions: DoDonPachi DOJ, Ibara, ESPgaluda, Psyvariar2 (auto roll function ^_^), Psikyo Shooting Collections 1-4 (too many to list!), ThunderForceVI / Contra: Shattered Soldier (AMAZING GAME), MegaMan X8 (underrated?)

Did I miss anything? (specifically related to THESE systems). I would imagine theres huge gaps in the NES, MD & SNES shmups as I seriously only got into them in the SAT & PS1 era... I need to go back and get ones for the 3 I just mentioned. ANY recommendations would be well received Wink

Awesome NeoGeoNinja. Some fantastic mentions there. UN Squadron on the SNES- what a fantastic shooter that is. Zed Blade always reminds me a bit of that one.

Here are some other recommendations:-

Megadrive - Giaires, Tiger Heli, Verytex and Vapour Trail
Master System - Xenon 2, Global Defence and Astro Warrior
Saturn - In the Hunt, Parodius, Image Fight/X Multiply and Salamander Collection
Dreamcast - Last Hope, Rez, Gunspike and Trigger Heart Exelicar
Xbox 360 - Wartech (Senko no Ronde)
Xbox - Tecmo Classic Arcade (Starforce, Pleiades and Strato Fighter)

Please support the Shoot em Up thread!!
Go forward for make away as joystick. Push A button for approach of enemy. Break of enemy for A and B. Make high score for break get together - Neo Mr Do!

Anything by Cave, Toaplan, Raizing or Psikyo gets a big thumbs up from me.

Linky linky: http://www.world-.../index.htm

Plus PCE/Hudson genius like Gunhed, Final Soldier, Air Zonk et al. I'd go into more detail but I'm short on time...

RiKo
Well done Ninja Clap- you got a lot of my favourites in there, but I will say them anyway.

Here are the shooters I love:

SNES - UN Squadron (I fully agree with you guys - I used to love this so much, and the bonus sections were pretty cool too)
Amiga - Xenon II - you HAD to own this if you had an Amiga!
Dreamcast - Mars Matrix (love it!), Rez, and Space Harrier (in Shenmue)
Neo Geo - Blazing Star and Viewpoint (not very good at this though)
Arcade/Playstation - R-Type
PS2 - Gradius V (maybe the best horizontal shooter ever!)

A lot of good recommendations in this thread. There are so many great shoot 'em ups I've never played. I'm especially keen to buy more Saturn shooters and some Cave games for PS2.

Here are some of my recommendations:

Neo Geo: Last Hope, Ironclad

I've mentioned Last Hope already today but Ironclad by Saurus is also a wonderful shoot 'em up. Graphics and music are really nice. One thing which I think is very original about this game is that not only do you have a choice of pathways through the game but also there are multiple different final stages each with their own unique end boss.

Snes: UN Squadron

Megadrive: Twin Hawk, Hellfire

Sega Master System: Power Strike (Aleste), Power Strike 2, Thunderblade, Action Fighter

The Power Strike games are excellent but I've always found them really tough and could never get very far. Thunderblade does have 2D sections so I guess it does count for this thread. I played that one a hell of a lot and actually prefer it to the Megadrive version.

One game I'm really keen to get as well is Judgement Silversword - Rebirth Edition on the Wonderswan. It was the winner of a Wonderwitch homebrew competiton and then was released officially. It really is very impressive but looks extremely tough with huge numbers of shots to avoid at any one time. It's also a very expensive game to buy.

A few other great shmups:
Chou Aniki - PC Engine
Ai Chou Aniki - PC Engine
Winds of Thunder - PC Engine
Sapphire - PC Engine
Twinkle Star Sprites - Neo Geo
Pulstar - Neo Geo
Blazing Star - Neo Geo
Dragon Blaze - Arcade
Gunbird 2 - Arcade
Vasara 2 - Arcade
Armed Police Batrider - Arcade
Great Mahou Daisakusen - Arcade
Psyvariar 2 - Arcade, Dreamcast , PS2?
Ikaruga - Arcade, Dreamcast, Gamecube

Better get practicing, huh?

Cheers for bringing this game 'up'... I've enjoyed it!

I find it strange that no-one has mentioned Radiant Silvergun yet. Maybe it is overhyped after all? Grin

I kind of want to mention Defender (really the home computer versions because they were more fun), but its not really a shoot-em-up (in the strict sense)

lol... I was actually on the dance floor at a metal club here and those two pics were taken at very inopportune times. The originals are either on this forum somewhere or perhaps the old proboards one still, not sure. LOL

The sig is great though, but you're a bastard for using it again... LOL!
