Looks very tasty.
I really like Raz El Hanout, I use it in a Maroccan lamb stew I sometimes make.

Good to see plenty of activity in this thread. Particularly like the look of Sensi's fish and potato meal.

I've become a bit obsessed with Ramen Jiro recently. Tastes incredible and since the portion sizes are large it's very good value for money. I had this bowl (cost 700 yen) at the Senju Ohashi Ramen Jiro. They have a machine in the shop for making the noodles. The noodles are thick and chewy and the ramen comes with big chunks of pork and extra garlic if you want it. Delicous!

Thanks everyone, I'm planning to eat the same next saturday, exchanging fish for steak with garlic butter.

Very curious about the taste of Ramen, especially after playing the Yakuza games.
Does you get stuffed of it?

Good ramen is really delicous. Give it a try Sensi! In most ramen places the normal portion is a good size and quite filling but I often still order the largest size. In Ramen Jiro however even the 'small' size portion should be enough for most people. One downside to Ramen Jiro is you almost always have to queue outside the shop because it's so popular.

You could check out some ramen places in Amsterdam Sensi. I haven't been to them myself but some of them get good reviews.

Thanks Merlin for the tips.
There is also a restaurant in Amstelveen who serve Ramen (read in the reviews), so maybe that's also a place to consider. Is there one (classic) Ramen which you can recommend? Meat and vegetables are allright.
Anyway, another one thing for the must to do list for this year.

merlin
Hard to recommend one type of ramen in particular but I would suggest maybe the first time you go having tonkotsu ramen which has a pork flavour broth. Don't know if you've tried them before Sensi but gyoza taste really good too. It's very common for people to eat gyoza with ramen.

I know Cthulhu is also a ramen fan. He posted some home made ramen earlier in this thread. Perhaps he has checked out some of those Dutch ramen places.

The only ramen noodles I'm familiar with are Maruchan brand (the cheapest of the cheap). They are horrible by themselves. The other day, however, after many years, I had some with chili and beans and it was actually edible.

Pro tip: add ingredients and condiments to make it edible, such as: beans, rice, chili, salt, pepper, hot sauce, horseradish, seafood.

Hi all,

As a birthday present I was original invited (see pic) to eat Ramen for the first time.
I chose the place who mentioned Merlin in earlier posts.

s24.postimg.org/40qp1mu9x/IMG_0550.jpg

I brought the pic with me and the Japanese waitress recognized him and let me knew via her cell phone, he is famous in Japan, having his own movie there.
She barely did speak any English so after calling someone from the kitchen, I could ask some questions about their place and Japan. The resaturant was very authentic, with only Japanese people eating there. The atmosphere and food were delicious, due my visit I thought I was in Japan! A great and odd experience which I won't forget.

Anyway, this was the meal:

* Tonkotsu Shoyu Ra-men (first time eating with chopsticks, still practicing)
* Cold Tea
* Mochi ice cream (3 scoops, Grean Tea, Black Sesame, Vanilla)
* Mini Tai-Yaki (fish shaped pancake with warm, sweet red beans)
* Cup of green tea (from the house Smile )

Merlin, is it habit for Japanese restaurants to have (comic)books available?
There were bookcases filled with books and (anime)comics, really cute.

Also, did you know most of the Japanese people living in the Netherlands are situated in Amstelveen?

cthulhu
I somehow missed the last posts on this wonderful thread.

Good to read that you loved the ramen in Amstelveen...ramen is great and I've eaten it a lot the two times I went to Japan. Didn't know that there were ramen restaurants here in The Netherlands...too bad they're so far away from where I live.
If you want to make some yourself, I can recommend the Cooking with Dog recipe. It takes quite some time to prepare, but it tastes awesome and it's wel worth the effort:

YouTube Video

The only thing I didn't make myself is the dashi stock, I've used instant dashi. Instead of Nori, I've used wakame and I left out the spinach. I even found a place in Rotterdam that sells Narutomaki.

Here are the ramen dishes I made with the Cooking with Dog recipe:

I also have a great recipe for matcha (green tea) ice cream that I've made a little while ago:

I'm glad you had a good time on your birthday Sensi and enjoyed the ramen. Sounds good. Since the other people there were all Japanese that probably means it was very good. I don't think they would put up with inferior ramen.

Perhaps next time I'm in Nederland I'll check one of those places out too.

Cthulhu's home-made ramen looks good! I've never tried to make any myself before.

I haven't noticed that at restaurants I go to but maybe some other places have that.

I didn't know that. Interesting. I've stayed in Amstelveen a few times because my great aunt used to live there.

I'm still obsessed with Ramen Jiro. I want to visit as many of them as possible. Really love the thick and chewy noodles. These were from the Kameido and Koiwa branches.

Wow Cthulhu, if the dishes taste how they look, they must be awesome.
Making ramen using the dog recipe is a awful lot of work, much respect for people who can pull it off with all these patience. Are there other (good) Ramen recipes who requires a lot less effort? Also getting the right ingredients isn't easy.

You should check it out Merlin. I'm definitely going back later this year to taste ramen or other dishes. Are there many differences between ramen? To be sure, I asked for the 'classic' one. What I also like about ramen, you get stuffed of it but nowhere too much and it doesn't get you thirsty.

You're ramen looks tasty. It's pork with a lot of vegetables?

merlin
Yes it always seemed like it would be very time consuming to make ramen yourself so that put me off trying.

The wikipedia article about ramen gives some good information about the different types. I would try miso ramen and shio ramen if they have it. Also I definitely recommend having some gyoza next time if they have them.

Yes that ramen has a rich pork flavour broth and also comes with some big pieces of pork. Before serving it they ask each customer how they would like their ramen. There are various options but I always ask for extra 'yasai' (bean sprouts and/or cabbage) and 'ninniku' (garlic).

Sensi
If I remember correctly, they have four other types of ramen and gyoza as well.
There are also a few pictures on their site who look like some kind of pizza:
http://www.ishii-...iyaki.com/
Do you know the name of the dish? It looks tasty.

So gyoza can be used as a starter or as a side dish with ramen. I will try it, thanks!

cthulhu
Yes, those dishes taste as great as they look. Homemade ramen has a really rich flavor and is always better than instant ramen (of course). It's quite a lot of work but definitely worth it.
Most ingredient are relatively easy to get, it all depend on where you live. I live in Dordrecht where there's a good Indonesian toko and Dordrecht is also near Rotterdam where there are two great Asian supermarkets (one in the Markthal and one near the Euromast) and a nice small Japanese/ Korean toko that has Narutomaki for sale. Most ingredients can also be bought at http://www.amazin...ental.com/, which is one of the two supermarkets in Rotterdam.
