i havn't got to the bai hu stage in quite a while i usualy start from the start and so i never get to bau hu, ive never actualy completed the entire game who have you completed it with and whats your technique

merlin
Bai Hu is not easy to defeat that's for sure but persevere and you'll get there in the end Powerwave.

So far I've only got through Breakers with two characters so I'm definitely no expert. The best I've done is complete it with Sho on level 6 difficulty and Alsion III on level 5. I came within one hit of completing it with Maherl but Bai Hu beat me. I can't even get to Bai Hu with Tia so I must really suck at using her.

I think Sho is the easiest character to use in single player mode. My tactics are: do quite a few fireballs, hit the opponent with supers as much as possible usually Kurenai Gansai Shuu, do some simple 4/5 hit combos usually starting with a heavy flying kick and also use that old fighting game tactic of getting the opponent to jump by launching a fireball at them and when they are in the air hitting them with the Kurenai Sandan Keri move. That last tactic is very effective against Bai Hu.

I still have a lot to learn about this game that's for sure.

Powerwave
i think ile try it with sho his roster of moves are unbeatable paticularly kurenai sandan keri, i will probs be only able to complete it on level 1 but thanx for your tips i shall try them in the everlasting quest against bai hu

HexElf
Dao-Long is obviously the star of this game, no matter how many times I land one of his supers I can't help but do his trademark "ottaaah!"
Cudos to Condor for actually being a really strong and useful character despite being a "capcom style grappler" and a "native american grappler" stereotype, and some for Rila too because she could totally make Blanka her bitch using her supers alone since... you know, they are actually good.

But ah... more on this game later, already did one hefty review today LOL

I know this game is so rare that it's in the "name your price" category, but honestly I'd almost kill for a copy to bring home. If SNK can make this appear on the next Arcade Classics I'll buy two extra copies just to say "thank you fighting game god!"

hi hexelf and welcome to the thread. glad too see another guy who believes that this game is god, mvs versions of this game are cheap to pick up if you have a way of playing them. so your a dao long fan hey he is classic, and its nice to see another condor fan im a huge fan of playing with this fighter but some people don't get on with him that much not sure why though. Rila the monster lady yeah she could definately give blanka a run for his money they could make an excellent tag team in a dream match.

Powerwave
they should make a hd version of this game (like that'll ever happen)

HexElf
As promised, here's a patented HexElf mini rantview of the game...

Breakers Revenge (yeah why not? I get to cover both games at once)

The game, which will now be referred to as simply BR for simplicity's sake, is an old school brawler that borrows heavily from the Street Fighter franchise, the Alpha trilogy to be more specific. It features a bunch of characters, several of which are at least inspired by Capcom's outings. You've got your standard issue native American grappler, a female version of Blanka, Dhalsim's egyptian cousin, a girl who wishes that she could be Chun-Li but tries to make up for it with some shoto moves and a psycho crusher and... well there other characters too. Saizo the kind of badass ninja that we all love, Dao-Long the combo machine, and Maherl the... fat... sword guy with a genie...

The game plays similar to Street Fighter Alpha 2 or 3 but with four buttons and hell of a lot more leniency towards combos and super move insanity.

The good

What this game does the best, just like most other good Street Fighter clones with self respect, is adding a LOT of combo ability to the already stellar gameplay mechanics. Karnov's Revenge did it and so BR does it too. It's easy to chain jumping kicks into several rapid fire attacks and finish it off with a super, and why should it be any different? Just because tournament players have the ability to perform really difficult inputs doesn't mean that they are better than you at actually playing the game, nor did a steep learning curve ever help a game become more fun. It's accessibility that makes this game so great. If you love fighting games it will pull you right in and get to the really good stuff by the time you're done with your first time through.

Another thing that BR does good is that for all the borrowing it does (with movesets and character designs) it doesn't seem to bother with the usual balancing field. What this means is that just because Sho is the main character it doesn't mean you have to struggle with everyone else. BR gives the best anti-air to the grappler (gasp!), it makes one of the charge characters the biggest combo monster in the game (double gasp!) and makes the lead female one of the most well rounded characters in there (omg double D gasp!)
That's not to say Sho can't F you up with his myriad of setups and killer crossup moves, but it's such a nice change of pace that 90% of the cast wasn't designed to be secondary in the face of the hero or whoever has the fastest projectile. You can actually pick whoever you fancy and be able to kick ass from the get go.

The bad

Some of the character designs are really good, some of them are average and some are downright fail. So yeah we have some characters like Saizo who has enough personality to star in his own game but we also get put up with guys like Pielle whose presence is most likely enough to embarrass most players owning the game with his less than stellar design and incredibly dubious voice over. The cool art helps a lot but doesn't save everyone.

Then there's the translation. Though the story of fighting games tend to come secondary (unless they're hilariously bad like in Tekken or genuinely good like in KOF) I need to point out that this game suffers from the worst case of Engrish that I have yet to see in a fighting game. A lot of the time the translation is so botched that you can't even second guess what the characters are trying to say. It's a minor issue in the big picture but bad enough that you will notice it unless you settle for Japanese language settings.

Score 8/10
It's a lightning fast, well designed and above all fun fighting game that I am sure will appeal to just about anyone with a love for fighting games in general. It has issues yes but they are really minor in the face of the near perfect controls. Take my word for it, you really should give this game a try for yourself if you want something old-school that still holds up today. I played litterally hundreds of fighting games over the past decade and a half, and while BR may not be the perfect example of a fighting game, there are only a handful other titles there that can match this one for pure fun. Highly recommended, even if you're just a casual fighting gamer.

I like your reviews HexElf Thumbs Up Which do you prefer out of Breakers and Breakers Revenge? Also do you think BR is better than the original Streetfighter II?

Powerwave - I have just ordered Breakers Revenge, I'm looking forward to playing it. God knows where I am going to find the time though Grin

Thanks! I am glad they are able to entertain.

As for your questions; well I kinda prefer BR over the original Breakers because of the improved character art, the new guy Saizo and of course the moves they added. They are both great games but Revenge is obviously slightly better since it's an upgrade.

As for Street Fighter 2, if we're talking about the original World Warrior (the very first version of the game) then oh hell yes! Pretty much any game in the genre made from at least 95 and onwards destroys that one by default. Even if we're talking about the new SF2HD game I say Breakers still wins on the fun factor.

Congrats on getting the game too man, let us know how it plays!

You mentioned 'the moves they added'. Do you mean Saizo's moves or do the other characters have new moves? I own Breakers and have only ever played Breaker's Revenge through emulation. Apart from the obvious things like the different artwork and the new character I hadn't noticed many differences.

Congrats on getting the game RiKo! When it arrives and you've had a chance to play it I'd be interested to know what you think.

Powewave - My journey into Breakers has begun Thumbs Up

I literally only managed a quick go today. I was playing Puzzle Bobble for the score challenge, so I had a go after that.

Here are my first impressions.

-Very nice intro - I really like it Grin
-The graphics are better than I was expecting and the animation is good too. I love the bright colours too - I am a big fan of games which use bright colours!
- Control is very good and nice solid hits too
- It is definitely inspired by SFII - there is a Chun-Li lookalike and Sho is reminiscent of Ryu with his moves. and there is someone who is a bit like Blanka too.
- Yes I think/hope this is going to be the game I was expecting Grin - like SFII but faster and better and on the Neo Geo too!

By the way does anyone have a dragon-punch? because I really like Sho but I couldn't make him do a dragon-punch - which was the only disappointment (I play Ryu in SFIII, Ken in SFII and Marco in MOTW - so you see I am used to dragon-punches and fireballs)

Thank you to you guys on the Breakers thread for recommending me this game Bob

im glad your journey has begun hope it goes well, sho has a rising triple kick move when u do quater circle motion backwards with kick, its not a dragon punch but it is a rising attack

RiKo
Yes I found that one - you can do it repeated times to rise higher and higher. I will have to print out the movelist to learn all the moves. I normally just mess around first to see what I can discover - sometimes you can find moves that aren't in the list!

I think I can manage without the dragon-punch - its just cos I'm used to it. As you can see from my avatar - I am a big fan of Ralf in KOF, and he doesn't have a dragon-punch!

Thanks for the advice Power dude Grin

Glad to see you're enjoying Breakers RiKo. It really is a very special game. Although the characters are not the most original you do grow to love them. I think Sho is probably the easiest character to get to grips with because of his speed and special moves.

Don't you agree RiKo that it's quite a tough game? The cpu opponents put up a hell of a fight even on level 1 difficulty.

I've heard people say that the graphics aren't all that great but I disagree. I think the style of graphics is very appealing. The sprites are well animated and the backgrounds are nice to look at in particular Saizo's rooftop stage and Condor's wild west stage.

Powerwave
glad ure enjoyin it riko and like merlin said sho is your best place to start he's the easiest player to get to grips with. i agree with everything u said btw merlin despite not being overly original the characters realy grow on you and you'll love eventualy.

RiKo
Thanks Merlin and Powerwave Grin

Yes I played Breakers again today - not for long though - I find fighting games tiring (I have just had a new filling in my tooth and it is causing me trouble - I am allergic to everything!).

BTW its Breakers Revenge - I just shorten everything - doh. I am still playing as Sho - I found a few more moves today as well. Merlin - you are right - it does seem a lot harder than most fighting games - but I think thats good in a way. I don't think I've got past stage 4 yet - I am starting to find little tricks and things - like noticing that a lot of characters do a low attack straight after a high attack - so I can block it where as before I was being hit.

The only Sho Super move I found so far is the QCFx2 - kind of like an elongated fireball. I have printed the move list of (just now) so I will use that now Grin

I'm not very happy with the cart at the moment - it plays fine but the sound is a bit messed up - on a couple of the stages (only) - I have just cleaned it - ao I hope that does the trick Grin

I really like Sho as a character and Mai (the one who looks like Chun-Li). I haven't seen them all yet - so I will report back.

glad ure getting on with it riko thats a bugger about the cart having issues with sound hope it gets solved another good move is QCB x2 pus kick its probably the most satisfying move in the history of video games

boogiepop
I know there's quite a few guys around here who know what a fan I am of Dao-Long. I also play around with Condor and Tia from time to time but that's about it. Definitely one of my favorite fighters on the neo.
If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.
