The Worst Console EVER!!!!
RiKo
What do people think is the worst console ever made and released upon the unsuspecting public? or maybe just the worst console you have ever owned. It might be terrible games or poorly designed hardware. Whatever the reasons - which console just plain sucks?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can think of couple of worse consoles (which I didn't own) but I feel I have to go for the Atari Jaguar. I really don't like it. For a start it might have a 64bit graphics chip but its CPU is the same as the Neo Geo, Amiga, Megadrive etc - all 16 bit machines.

These machine all have great games but the Jaguar has one - Tempest 2000 (an update of an old arcade game). I mean imagine if the GameCube's greatest game had been Pacman Versus. The game controller has an obscene number of buttons but in reality it has 3 since the others are all tiny and hard-to-press.

You had games like Flashback, Canon Fodder, Pinball Fantasies, Sensible Soccer - all games you have already played on older more fun consoles. Then there was Iron Soldier and Alien Vs Predator - Ok games but you might as well get your Playstation out and play Iron Soldier 2 or Alien Ressurection. For beat-em-ups there was Kasumi Ninja.... Compare this to the Neo Geo's best and laugh Smile

I bought a jaguar recently and sold it within 6 months. Its not truly awful when you only pay 15-20 for it (I would keep it if i had space, and it had better games), but in its time - when it was 'the world's first 64-bit home entertainment system' it was pants! This was a time when you could have waited a few months and bought a Sony Playstation (with Ridge Racer) or a Sega Saturn (with Virtua Fighter).

Not all was bad with the Atari Jaguar - it came in a black box with 2 yellow Jaguar eyes staring out - which looked nice, and if you told one of your friends that you owned a Jaguar - they might think you have a nice car...... possibly.

I still have a Jaguar... I bought it around 6 months after it was released, which was around the same time as the 3DO (which I paid 500 for!!). It wasn't a terrible console imo, it just suffered from the obvious lack of Japanese support. Had Atari not been quite so xenophobic then perhaps we would look back at the Jaguar in a slightly different way. It had the necessary power (at the time), just not the software. It does have a few games worth owning... Doom, AvP, and of course Tempest 2000, which is worth the price of the console alone. But the controllers were awful, just awful.

I'd love to say the worst console ever is the Playstation, just for the detrimental effect Sony had on the industry as a whole. A topic that has been covered well enough already. And I'm sure anyone that remembers it will not be surprised at all by my voting PSX. But I'm not going to. The console itself was a great piece bit of kit, mainly because of the way Sony built it, by asking the top developers what they wanted in it. It's just sad that Sony turned the brand into a cartel. Anyways...

I'd have to vote Amiga CD32. To my mind a console that has no redeeming qualities at all. Seriously, I can't think of one.

Oh, and I just remembered the Amstrad GX4000... What were they thinking...

Philips CD-i has to be the worst in my book...

-$700 in 1991

-The rip-off Nintendo titles (I know TECHNICALLY they weren't, but damn.)

-By the time Philips decided to pursue the video game market, the CD-i was completely irrelevant.

-the CD-i was manufactured by about 8 different companies.

-Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon....need I say more?

Nah, even the Jaguar and 3D0 have atleast 1 good title. I'm going with SteveDave the Phillips CD-I is really a flaming piece of crap covered in horse piss.

The Commodore 64, Atari 2500, 5200 and 7800. I don't like em'. Amiga I find some games have better quality music than other versions like Monkey Island for instance. The PC Engine I wouldn't call super exciting, but it really has one of the shortest game lists I ever seen. Atari ST, I would not all time stick with unless they've got anything better than older versions. Sega Master System and Game Gear I'm only a tenth of the time playing. Sega Megadrive is irresistable except they always mess up SNK games. What I don't like about Sega CD games is that Sega always hires screwy actors, you'll see how fake an acting voice is, if you try the Sega CD version of Prince of Persia.

Riko I remember Flashback also known as the Quest for Identity and its cousin "Out of this World" or known in Europe as "Another World". Whatever Prince of Persia Style Platformers there are, I'll play em'. You should take a look at Blackthorne otherwise known as Blackhawk, that comes on many consoles and computers.

I can only talk about systems I've owned...but:

The worst console I ever owned was the Channel F. It had no good games on it period. Secondly I would say The Atari Jaguar. I expected so much and got so little...I wish I had it long enough to play this:

Anyway, The 3DO was bad too, expensive but very few games worth buying other than Madden and NFS.

BTW...the C64 was a wonderful machine.

Shiny - We have to agree to disagree. The Jaguar does have a good homebrew scene though. I think there was game called 'BattleSphere' which is meant to be very good. The Playstation is one of my favourite consoles! - I also like the way it shook up Sega and Nintendo - who needed it at the time! I think Gran Turismo on the original PSX is an absolute masterpiece - at the time it took the p*ss with what was acheived. Actually you are right - in that it was sad that the Playstation probbaly killed Sega off - its reputation and finances were too low when the Dreamcast was released - for it to recover. Though to be fair Sega was an experienced company and Sony was nothing (in video game terms) so perhaps Sega killed itself off......

Oh, and I just remembered the Amstrad GX4000... What were they thinking...

I fully agree with you here Smile Also there was the C64 console - released at the same time - that sucked too!

Yes I had good fun with 'Another World' on the Amiga (+Flashback). I have heard of Blackhawk but I haven't played it. I think you can get it on the SNES - which I have - so I will try to get hold of it. I remember some controversy about killing prisioners in the game when it was released (I think that is right?). Thanks for the recommendation Smile

P.S. I don't think the C64 computer sucked - just the console
PPS Those are nice demos Robotron - remind me a little of Pulstar.

If the Dreamcast played DVDs it wouldn't have died such a quick death.

The Xbox and GameCube (especially) would have had a hell of of a time competing with the DC due to the three year head start it had on those consoles. Sadly, that head start worked against Sega.

Very true - and if Electronic Arts had signed up as well. They bring the mass-market.

Shortest games list??? I think the PC Engine has quite a big catalogue of games and a lot of great ones to be honest (mostly Japanese games). One of the shortest games catalogue would be the Atari Lynx.
I have to agree with the CD-i Being the worst console ever.

Alright I understimated it. Unless of course its both PC Engine and PC Engine CD games together. By the way Riko, I forgot to mention another Super Nintendo game you may also find entertaining called "Demon's Crest" and it only appears on SNES. You may have guessed its the last part of the Gargoyle's Quest Trilogy. Screenshots and information can be found on http://infinity.a...Index2.htm . I'm beginning to like the variety SNES has more than before. Wink

RiKo
Thanks Will. I have Demon's Crest - but I'm still trying to complete Super Ghouls and Ghosts (that may never happen!). I like the huge Dragon at the start! The Snes is great - I still absolutely love F-Zero - I think its amazing, and the music is superb too - funky in places Smile

I think the PC Engine was a great console too - Street Fighter(s), R-Type, PowerDrift, Gunhed, Castlevania etc - all amazing. It does lead me onto what could be a new contender for the worst console ever though.
The SuperGrafx (the successor to the PC Engine). Here's why.

1) it had 6 games! This is appalling. I think I am right that for the first few weeks/months on sale it had one game - Battle Ace. How can you possibly launch a console with just one game? Madness!
2) The sleek looks of the PC Engine were gone and replaced by a larger chunkier console which was meant to resemble an engine - it looked cheap and ugly.
3) Ok it could play PC Engine games - but this was a new console, we wanted new games.
4) Technically it wasn't particularly amazing.
5) The PC Engine was great so this was a BIG letdown.

Anyone remember the 32X, the 32 bit Megadrive add-on...a cartridge based 32 bit system when it was already known that the Playstation was coming and the Saturn was in development. It also has a very small games catalogue of which only a few are quite good. Not really a big shock that it didn't become a great success.

I remember the 32x - I so wanted one - it sounded amazing at the time. I have never played with one though. I remember the USA boss of Sega being convinced that the 32X would outsell the Saturn - it probably didn't Smile

I have to say I also wanted a 3DO. I think when these consoles were first announced - they all sounded like dream consoles -its just that the announcement of the Playstation really raised the bar - technology wise, and rained on everyones parade. (and it was cheap too - for the time)

THX - you came up with some very strong contenders there! I think the Virtual Boy's a nice novelty console though - if a bit weak, and it could probably make you ill.

I think for worst console (I didn't own) I would go with SteveDave with his choice of the CD-I. That really was a terrible console with terrible games. I'm sure no-one bought it.

I read about a console called the Odyssey II which was very cheeky - it had something like 12 built in games. However... (and this is the cheeky bit) you were only told it had 6 built in games. When you bought extra games which came in the form of plug-in cartridges they actually just contained a code to unlock existing games - already on the console.

Dammit, I'm a die hard Nintendo follower and even I can't say it with a straight face. But that said I don't think its horrible, its as Riko says, a nice novelty piece.
