KOF 96 is Good?
RiKo
After enjoying particularly some of the KOF96 music on the NGFL Jukebox - I bought the game (it is nice and cheap!). Anyway last night I played it - and really enjoyed it. My favourite KOF is still 2002 but I haven't spent a lot of the time with the rest of the series. What I like about KOF 96 is the vibrant graphics, the backgrounds are particularly outstanding. I don't know the names for all the locations, but I like the one by the ship, and the one in Osaka. They all look pretty amazing really - there's Mais stage with the Aquarium too.

I like the way the other members of your team stand in the background and cheer or look embarassed (don't think this happens in 02). I think the pallette was toned downed for the later KOFs but I much prefer the bright reds, yellow and blues of this incarnation.
The musics pretty good too! What do other people think of KOF96? I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this game. Definitely worth the price.

On the subject of being pleasantly surprised (but not SNK related, sorry!) - I also played Sonic the Hedgehog on a Japanese Megadrive (with RGB output) recently and was very very impressed. i used to have the PAL version when I was younger, but I haven't played it for years. I have to say it looked amazing - I thought better than Sonic 2 (which I loaded up afterwards) - lovely colours and sharp garphics. You wouldn't complain if this game was on the Neo Geo. Its the best looking game I have on my Megadrive, and it plays pretty good as well. I really like Sonic now. Smile

PS - what do people think is the best stage on a Vs fighting game? My favourite is Terry's stage in MOTW where you fight on top of the train, and there's that amazing 3D effect with the girders on the bridge. Then on the 3rd round you end up fighting at the railway station. Brilliant.

You picked the right game pal Wink The feminine referee is a lot better than the freak man who commentates in the earlier games cos thats style for you. Certainly the graphics are vibrant and more. The first introduction and opening of the Orochi plot. KOF 96' I hail! KOF 96' I vote! KOF 96' I entitle supreme Thumbs Up. I haven't as yet seen KOF 2002 but I'll see it when I can.

Regarding the stages, I think you're little confused if you don't mind me saying. The stage with aquarium is not really Mai's stage, its King's Grand Penthouse Restuarant, and you will see two of King's waitresses. I've got a good idea where most of the stages are taking place, but I am not an oracle as you can see LOL My favourite stages are King's Grand Restuarant, the great harbour with the cruiser, the railway checkpoint in New Mexico and the barge in Venice.

Yea its a really good game. But remember that NO one plays it, so if you're looking for a game with competition, you'd best be looking at 98 or 02 (even 95, 99, 2000, and the newer ones get more play.)

KOF '96 is the only game in the series I own so far. Although I'm not really a huge KOF fan I've got to admit it's a quality title. I do find Goenitz very tough to defeat though. One thing that really stands out in this game is the soundtrack...very impressive! The stages all look great especially the boss team stage.

Yes KOF 96 is good! - you're right I don't know the correct names for the locations. I only played it last night for the first time - so I have a good excuse Smile Yes I like all the stages you mention - I like the way there are so many people - so much life going on in the backgrounds.

KOF02 is a darker game, but its a Dream match game like 98, so there's loads of fighters to choose from. I also think they have more moves to choose from - which is always good

Carmen - I'm not that good at KOF (compared to the hardcore dudes) so I just play what I feel like. BTW why do people not play 96 as much as the others? I usually just play with people who come round my house and none of them have a NEo Geo - so I generally win Smile

I haven't been able to play tonight (working), but I got quite far into the game last night before getting a severe beating from the AOF team - b**##?s! I haven't seen the bosses yet

KoF '96 is still my favourite in the series. Although '98 and '02 are superior for multiplayer shenanigans '96 is the best single player experience, imo. Smile

Saying that XI is pretty damn special too. And the one that gets the most play time at the moment.

I'm still really enjoying this - I played again last night and got onto the boss stage - which looks pretty awesome too! I was doing Team Play and I had my final team member - Daimon against Krauser. We were both down to the last minute bit of energy and both went for a jumping attack - his connected first - dammit! Anyway I had no more credits left:(
I think one of the big draws is the combination of the lovely graphics and kicking music.

I haven't got XI? I presume its on PS2 - I may have to get that - and a stick to play with!

I used to play KOF 96 everyday at arcade about ten years ago. It was set to level 8 and nobody wanted to play but me so game was mine all day long. Grin I still play it sometimes though newer Kof games has better gameplay. But i love the backgrounds and of KOF 96 and it is still fun for me.

Wow - you must be good - I am just playing on the default difficulty at the moment. Did you get that good just playing at the arcade? - it must have cost you a fortune - unless you were a quick learner.

Playing at arcade was very cheap here. I could buy 6 tokens for 1 Turkish lira ( I guess it makes 7 or 8 tokens for 1 $) But they all closed now. I used to play Street Fighter II CE and Real Bout Fatal Fury at arcade. One day my firend said me to play KOF 96. He made me pick Ralf, Choi and Athena (i don't like using them now though) and gave some tips and i beat the game at first play.

Talking of the many combinations you can choose and customise for 3 fighters, don't you think its extremely strange in a game like that, you can choose any three you like. Like Andy with Terry and Geese, whom they both hate or Ryo with Robert and Eigi, whom they both hate. Do uou wonder how they can bury their vendettas and hatred in the tournament after all their rivalry and murder attempts? I know the actual point of this is to build a perfect team that suits the player try out their super powers.

Imagine a KOF game where you could pick identical clones of the same character and there's no difference except for colour clothes. Three Geeses would mean triple trouble and that goes for Billy Kane too. Certain trios have special names like Terry, Andy and Joe are called the Lonely Wolves, but if there's Geese instead of Joe, I'd call them the Lonely Rivals.

ROBOTRON
KOF 96 is excellent. It also contains some of my fav KOF tunes from the series. Choi is one of my fav chars and he was STRRRRONG in 96.

My fav KOF top 5:

KOF 98
KOF 00
KOF XI
KOF 96
KOF 02

Will - do you still have any KOF Arcade machines in Malta? I watched a few holiday rep (tacky TV!) programs a few years back. They were set in the Mediterranean area and there were often MVS machines in the hotel lobbies. It was hard to identify the games - seeing as they were always in the background. I did recognise a couple of Metal Slug games. I thought I saw a Shock Troopers one too.

Robotron - I think I will have to play KOF98 - everyone loves that game. I played it once when I first got my Neo Geo, but to be honest I forgot I had it (a common hazard of storing my games in cardboard boxes). Does it have good music?
I have an irrational hatred of short characters in fighting games - so Choi - just really annoys me! I think its just that half my moves fail to connect - and its irritating having to keep using the same attacks. The worst guy was Dr Baranaechek (? spelt something like that) from Tekken 3 - he used to lie down. I REALLY hated him Smile

Dr. Bosconovitch was too lame. I don't like short characters either.

Haven't played KOF '96 in an age but it is still one of my faves. I wasn't the biggest fan when it originally came out; it grew on me later on though, big time. Also still has one of the finest soundtracks in any KOF game.

Dr. B was incredibly lame, but he was funny to use in vs if you weren't playing seriously. My friend used to get so frustrated when I used him Pfft

What was worse was that you had to complete Tekken Force 3 times in a row to unlock him. Its like they punished you for being so stupid! Smile They was also that stupid dinosaur - Gon - he was short too. Aaah - too many bad memories - it was a great game though.

Since this is a KOF 96 thread I must also say again that KOF96 is great too!
