mvs to aes conversions
jlz
I always see MVS to AES conversion carts on ebay (metal slug, kizuna encounter etc), is this a difficult thing to do?

I know you can get converter carts, but they are pretty expensive (about the same price as a supergun?), so I was wondering if you could knock up a homemade aes conversion.

Here's the basic lowdown on conversions. You need:
a) the mvs cart you want to convert
Cool a cheap aes cart to convert it into
c) a helluva lot of rewiring
I'm fairly sure that's it.

I, as you, also think "well that doesn't sound all that hard" but from what I hear, the price of conversions reflects just how difficult it is to rewire those in such a confined space. It's also frowned upon by some as a cart has to be sacrificed for the converting. Of course, it is your cart and solely your business. I can certainly understand why someone would be reluctant to pay the cost of a Metal Slug aes cart and consider a conversion instead. Also, every converter made thus far has been flawed in some way or another.

Seems to me a job best left to the experts! I believe the cost of the donor carts can be quite expensive if you want to convert a high meggage MVS game. Good luck if you try it though. Let us know how you get on!
Go forward for make away as joystick. Push A button for approach of enemy. Break of enemy for A and B. Make high score for break get together - Neo Mr Do!

Are you sure that makes a difference? I'm fairly convinced the meg count doesn't matter in this case.

Is the AES cart not just for cosmetic purposes then? Is there anyway you can just mod an MVS cart without butchering an AES cart?

I do not like the idea of destroying a home cart just to save money

boogiepop
I don't believe there is. Though you might be able to stick the aes board into the mvs one for a complete exchange. I'm not sure on this however.

I can really understand why people would make or buy conversions but I think ultimately buying an MVS converter to use with your home system is a better idea. No AES carts need to be sacrificed then.

Sometimes these converters can be a bit pricey especially if you buy one brand new from the Neo Store but they do sometimes come up at a better price on ebay so it's worth looking out for one.

The MVS "pcb:s"/boards are physically larger than its AES counterpart so its not just a cosmetic thing.

No, you are incorrect. You have to sacrifice an AES cart for every converter that is made.

Although fewer AES carts will have to be sacrificed, that is true.

Whoa!! This is news to me.
Shocking even. Shock

Huh? Why did you think you'd need an AES cart for a Conversion but not for a converter? :-)

The reason why there is need to sacrifice the AES cart is because you need a special chip that are only in the AES carts. MVS carts doesn't have this chip and this chip is the main reason why there is no easy way to play the AES carts on a MVS or MVS carts on an AES(besides from the fact that their connectors and carts are physically different).

PCBs and cases can always be reproduced, those are not the main reasons you use AES carts for conversions. It is those darn chips. If someone could reproduce them och if they could be bought loose. The prices of the converters would probably drop considerably.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification Mikoto. I guess I never really thought about it that much to be honest.
